Marlin XL7

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I have been hearing good things about the Marlin XL7 and been thinking about getting one. My question is what caliber should I get. I am not a hunter, it will mostly be used for target shooting but i would like to have the ability to hunt with it if need be. It comes in .270 and .30-06. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to either of these? I am fairly new to guns so I am not sure which would be better.

Thanks for any advice.

between the 2 i would get .30-06. definetely hunting capable and i believe there is surplus ammo for cheap shooting in .30-06 if im not mistaken

not sure which model you are lookng at but some come in .25-06, 7mm-08, .243, or .308

.308 would be cheaper and more plentiful to shoot

Don't believe I've seen one in person yet, but they do look like nice rifles.

The .30-06, .270, etc is usually on a long action and the .308/.243/7mm-08 are on a shorter action. The short actions are about, what, a quarter inch shorter and they weigh marginally less. Something like that. Thats why they have a different model number.

Like the previous poster said, probably .30-06 or .308 is your best bet for some kind of surplus ammo. Its all expensive these days though. 06 is probably marginally easier to find in stock at walmart and .308 is a few bucks cheaper. YMMV.
