I hope someone here can help us out, we found out yesterday that someone took the license plate off my Mom's car. I have been looking around the various TN and Shelby county sites but we are having a hard time finding info on what we need to do to report this. Has anyone had this happen that can give us some advice?

Thanks!

Contact your local LE, have the vehicles VIN an Insurance card and the owners information, if financed the title holders information.

File a theft report, then get a copy of the report and take it down to the tag office, they will issue you a new tag for a small fee.

i would first call the police and see what they have to say, second go to the department of public safety or tag issue place what ever it may be, and get new tags.

reason, someone may be doing a crime, or just getting a ticket for parking, or just hates you, and wants to make your life a little more difficult, so cover your self with the law, and state, report it, and get new.

I'm glad you asked. The number one precaution I take with all of our license plates and that of my family's and friends is that we put the new stickers on really good, and then we score the sticker with a sharp knife several times in each direction to make it undesireable to steal. I went out to my truck one day and saw that they bent the plate at the bottom so as to cut it off, but they just left it. My wife uses heavy duty license frames and I replace all screws with torx head screws or lag bolts. But never keep ordinary flat or Phillips head screws on a plate because the thieves probably only carry one flat and one Phillips driver for all occasions.

Thanks guys! I passed the info along so she can call.

Frankly, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. I'm even more surprised they didn't grab the spare tire while they were at it.
