I lucked out and got a box of Remington .45 230gr...MC? I assume it's a synonym for FMJ but why the distinction?

Technical difference is:

FMJ leaves the base of the bullet exposed.

MC covers the entire bullet, including the base.

I assume you mean UMC from remington .UMC stands for Union Metallic Cartridge and it was the first company to manufacture centerfire ammunition .Remington now owns the company. The UMC line make 3 different cartridges for handguns FMJ, JHP and leadless they are used as practice/target ammunition .

You assume incorrectly. It is marked 230gr. MC. Thanks OhShoot. Are there any meaningful ballistic differences?

Not to my knowledge.

Could be that the MC came about to be more indoor range friendly, ie, less exposed lead, but don't really know.

The WinClean stuff, for example, touts the MC jacket design.
