HELP ! mag spring problem with my Mossberg turkey gun.

Recommended Posts

Some 24 or so years ago I bought a Mossberg 500 deer/turkey combo. It has served me well for a long time thru ALOT of game. Even got to use the slug barrel to take a few deer on some managed hunts at Oak Ridge and Ft Campbell. I was fortunate enough to take another turkey last week and when I unloaded my shotgun I noticed almost NO pressure holding tension on the magazine. Looking down the tube with the cap off it looks as if the spring is actually broken and/or twisted. The opening is so small i am assuming the tube will have to be removed to replace the spring. Any advice would be appreciated. Not sure how this has happened but it has become an old friend don't want to park it now.

if it is the spring,. the mag tube will have to come off... no big deal as it just unscrews from the receiver and a replacement spring isn't hard to find...remove barrel and lock action to the rear, unscrew mag tube...assemble in reverse order

just be careful you don't torque the receiver when you do it and all will be well I did one awhile back used 2 wooden blocks and clamped receiver in vice and strap wrenched the tube off gently with steady pressure and some Kroil if it is really stuck I guess you could judiciously use some heat on the front of the receiver but carefully

I am sure a gunsmith will be by to give the finer tips I have missed,... you will be up and running in no time...
