10/22 Tune-Up Suggestions

So after shooting this afternoon I decided to completely dismantle my beloved little 10/22. Have not cleaned it in at least 300 rounds and not dismantled it for a thorough workup since maybe 1984. The buildup of filth is amazing.

Anyway, while I've got the thing apart are there any "shade-tree mechanic" or gunsmithing-type things to do action-wise to smooth out that trigger pull? Thought I'd polish up all the friction areas in the trigger assembly to smooth out any burrs, etc. All I want to do is make what I have a little bit better, not replace all the components.

Any advice appreciated!

Check out rimfirecentral.com they have all the info with pics to do a really nice trigger job.

With help from I_like_pie and rim fire central I did a complete trigger job. The only extra part I ordered was a target hammer from Volquartsen that came with 2 springs. I got the trigger pull down to about 2 1/2 lbs with a really nice crisp clean pull. I love it!

Pretty much every part that touches another part or slides along another part is now a mirror shine (as a result of trigger job not wear)and has stayed that way for about 6,000 rds. I expect it stay that way for a very long time.

If you want a cheap trigger upgrade without having to polish parts yourself, search for SwampFox on there. He gets great reviews for his reworked factory triggers. He usually has some kits for sale in the classifieds.

From what I have read SwampFox dose great work. However as easy as a 10/22 trigger job is I can’t bring myself to spend the money to have someone else do it for me. This is the only trigger job I have done and it was soooo easy and I did not mess up any parts. It seems that most people are apprehensive a little bit to mess with trigger components the first time but as long as you don’t get in a hurry you will be fine. And if you do mess up a part there is always midwayusa.com where most factory trigger parts are really inexpensive some as low as .99 cents.
