New Speaker of the House: Rep. Kent Williams
Warbird replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
That's an absurd generalization and mischaracterization of a group of people. There are many honest, sincere, principled people elected to office across this country. You allow what is some bad, maybe even quite a few bad to disparage an entire group. I could just as easily say, you know how to tell if a cop is a power hungry, gun grabbing stoolie on the take, they have a badge. And base it on the actions of say the New Orleans PD to suggest that represents every cop in the nation. -
2008 County Handgun Statistics & Ranking
Warbird replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Gun community in Memphis is very active in general. If you figure in the Metro Areas of Nashville and Memphis, Nashville MSA if over 300,000 bigger than Memphis MSA: Nash MSA: 43755 Mem MSA: 35588 So with 300,000 less people they still have only 8165 more permits. Memphis per capita is way up there. Knox county per-capita is higher than Nashville, with a pop a bit less than half the size of Davidson. -

One point of clarification in your post. Naifeh has not been anti-gun rights since 1991. There would never have a carry permit passed without his help or the positive improvements that were made to the law in several sessions that came after. He later became incendiary toward gun owners rights and passing any legislation through. -

There's a huge difference between wanting to be speaker and getting the support from your party to do so. Secondly he pledged to support a republican leadership, that is a speaker and speaker pro-tem a powerful position and committees. -

It will all depend on who is selected to the committee chairmanships and which party is given majorities on those committees. -

Deberry Speaker Pro-Tem Well that does it, Williams might as well be a dem now. She is as bad in about every way, no more, as Naifeh. Naifeh is indeed a wiley cat. -

As I said in the other thread the repub threat was really a parliamentary trick or some other weird thing. Well they got it. Now he will split committees and repubs will get thwarted of many things likely. Mumpower doomed himself when he removed his objection. It wasn't a good one but it was probably parliamentary correct. Now if Deberry gets the Speaker-Pro Tem things will all be off the table. The other option is McDaniel, who was already a squishy repub. Not good. Not good at all. -
I guess Mumpower should not have backed down on his objection.

It's now up. Have fun, all who couldn't make it, watching it. I'll also be attending, hopefully, in the next few days a watch party, to see Naifeh move out.

There's nothing yet to see. One hour.

oops double tap.

This is simply not true. I'm not sure where this rumor was started, I've heard it several times in the last few weeks, but it is not correct. State Constitutional law specifically states that the previous legislature binds no ties to the current. Every two years we have a new legislature.

The repubs who voted for Naifeh are mostly either gone or are slated due to ranking to be very powerful in a repub lead house so there isn't a tremendous gain for them to do so. Mainly it was to kiss ass in the past. McDaniel will be speaker pro tem in the repub house, which is a pay off essentially in my book to keep him voting right. So he doesn't stand to gain anything by a Naifeh win. Naifeh is a note taker like John Ford so the only concern I would have is Naifeh having something on someone and trying to blackmail them. I would think the repubs are more concerned about them utilizing some antiquated parliamentary procedure to keep from having a vote. Some extraordinary circumstance procedure not used since reconstruction or something. If you can't attend you should watch it on streaming, it should be interesting and historic.

What? Do you understand what they are voting on? -
The vote is usually High Noon.

I think you are confusing two different levels of government. In the state Naifeh and his water carriers in the hous leadership did block revisions to the carry law, however it was also Naifeh who was speaker when we originally passed the carry bill and its first major revisions. He never sought to end that law, nor would he have succeeded with a repub senate. Note: even when the dems had the majority there were not enough anti-gun dems to have done it in the senate then either and again it was a dem led senate who passed the original bill. Now, the talk of ending carry laws or severely restricting them is a plan of Obama, Pelosi, Boxer and their ilk in Washington. That plan is to eliminate every state permit law. They will have a hard time doing it. I'm not sure they could even get enough blue dogs in the house to vote for it much less the difficulty in the senate. We must all be prepared to turn the pressure on the gun grabbers in congress when needed.

Whether to have liquor by the drink is a local issue. If you serve liquor or sell it for on premises consumption, you must serve food. However, you can serve beer w/o having to sell food at all. Period. If you have a tap and offer glasses for that beer then you must be regulated by the Health Dept as well, which means you must have a certain number of sinks etc etc. The TRA can always find something to cry about if the leaders of their group don't want it to pass. They carry little weight any more since their old connected leader left. You own a place and dont want someone to carry, simply post it. This is all minutiae but it will come up. Everyone will want to say yes here but no there and no here, but yes here. Ugh

His shop is next to his house, on the right side facing from the street, which is right on HWY 96.He has actually been there quite a long time, better than 20 years in fact. One other thing, if you do not like the smell of a wood burning stove or the smell of a pipe do not go there. Me personally, I love it.

I should be clear that when I said HE should know better, I was referring to the person heading the TRA, or really for the past year, their board president, as their ED was forced out. Sorry for the confusion. It was not aimed at you fallguy. And my point was really not relating to a difference in carry legislation between beer or liquor as relates to bars, but to the argument, which was a lie, that it would cause accounting headaches for restaurant owners.
-
You are correct, they limit entrance to 21 and over all the time. My point to the bars v restaurants matter is this, you can have an establishment in Tennessee that simply sells beer for on site consumption, but no food. However, you cannot sell liquor for onsite consumption anyplace but a restaurant, which must sell 51% of their receipts in food. This is different from the definition of a bar in most other parts of the country. If you sell beer and food, again you must sell mostly food. So the reasons given by the TRA for accounting difficulties is BS,

Better call Grady before just heading out there. He is only open 3 afternoons a week. Seems like his transfers are $35-$40 including background check. He specializes in shotgun shooting sports and cowboy action, but he is a retired engineer and can do most types of fitting work on shotguns as well. His prices especially on ammo are usually very good.

Summer sessions only rarely take place. However, they never take place in election years.
