  1. .010" larger than what? .451" - .010" = .441" ??? I am not aware of a caliber which is that diameter... Perhaps I'm missing something.
  2. www.budsgunshop.com is a little bit cheaper... by about $25 usually.
  3. Radiator caps are designed to maintain a specific pressure by releasing air, or drawing liquid from the overflow reservoir. Your jeep probably has a 16-18 psi cap. -Your drain cock might not be tightened down all the way. -The new drain cock might be faulty. -The drain port might be boogered up, and not allowing the new drain cock to seal or stay seated under pressure. -The radiator cap might be faulty, and allowing the system pressure to become excessive... but you would probably notice a high temperature, and/or rock-hard hoses before the failure pressure of a drain cock which was properly fitted. If your system is operating at high pressure, you should seriously have it pressure-tested... you might have a bad head-gasket. I would bet that the drain port is boogered up, and won't allow the drain cock to seal. Stop-Leak wouldn't be a good long-term solution. A larger o-ring might work... but it's quite possible that you need to have the radiator repaired.
  4. I buy online occassionally... Usually for my carry ammo though. It's pretty rare to come across a worthwhile bulk target ammo sale online, when Wal-Mart or some local bulk factory-reload manufacturers are just as inexpensive, even after paying sales-tax. Sometimes CheaperThanDirt or OutdoorMarksman will have some good deals, along with the suppliers already mentioned. I've ordered at least once from most of them, never had a bad experience... but never saved much money, either. If you order by the case, make sure you are nice to your delivery-person... 1000rd of ammo is heavy! Hopefully I've bought my last case, since as soon as I get everything moved in to my new house, I'll be funding a good reloading setup for the basement.
  5. I'd be far more inclined to support 'Criminal Control Laws'... and do away with any and all forms of 'Gun Control', regardless of who they were aimed at. That may have been what you meant, I just prefer to not vilify guns as any part of a crime problem by suggesting that any form of 'Gun Control' is reasonable. If all laws pertaining to guns were repealed, and the laws regarding criminal behavior were actually enforced... and enforced strictly... Violent crimes, such as murder (regardless of the tools used), rape, and robbery would plummet. This is simply because the surplus population of dirt-bags would be reduced through attrition. Fewer guns doesn't equal less crime, Fewer criminals does. Back on-topic, IMHO Zumbo is through. He knows it, and noone in the industry will touch him for a several years. He might as well go join the Brady Campaign. Kudos to Remington for dropping him like a hot-potato. That simple act will affect a several of my shotgun and bolt-action buying decisions in their favor.
  6. I see on their website http://www.donhume.com that there is a distinct selection for the 4" & 5" XD-45s... but that none are available. Will holsters for the XD-9/357/40 fit? I have heard (in passing) that they should, but am skeptical. So, I assume no... or at least not very well. Any input on this? I would certainly like it if my current DH rigs would fit; I know the Blackhawk SERPA will. I don't have an XD-45acp yet, but it will be soon if I get my way.

    S&W 1911

Based on my limited experience with S&W 1911s, I consider them to be of slightly superior quality than most comperable Kimber and even some Springfield 1911s. I'm holding out for a Dan Wesson Razorback, myself... Charles Daly makes some fine pistols, not quite in the same league as the more main-stream makers, but still un-questioningly shootable and carry-worthy. RIA is hit and miss... I've seen some which functioned fine with any ammo, even SWC, and I've heard of a few which barely fed ball ammo reliably. But, that's neither here nor there... A S&W 1911 PD Commander would be an excellent choice for carry, no question. Certainly very competently crafted 1911s.
  8. I will keep you in mind, sir, when my wife is ready to take the class. Thank you!
  9. It is just as possible to conceal a 5" XD as a 4" XD, since the grip-frames are the same size. The extra barrel length does make a slight difference in comfort, and the amount which you notice it's there, but does not impede concealment, using a good IWB holster. But, since you ask... I do prefer to carry my 4" XD-357 over my 5" XD-45. But that's mainly because I generally carry using an OWB holster. The 3" XDs are very easy to conceal, and I would expect the XD-45 Compact models to be, as well. Choose the pistol which fits and functions best for you, when shooting it, and then try a few different holsters. A good holster makes a huge difference in carry comfort and concealment... remember, your sidearm should be comforting, first, comfortable second. Out of the entire XD lineup, my opinion is that the XD-45 Compact is the best balance between all of the good qualities in the others. I don't own one yet, but intend to add one to my collection ASAP. From the choices you gave, I would suggest getting the XD-9 Service... since this is your first carry pistol. It's always best to start with a caliber which is cheap to shoot alot (since you'll need to get plenty of trigger-time and practice to familiarize yourself with it). 9mm is certainly an adequate caliber for self-defense, and would exhibit more controllable recoil characteristics. Welcome! molonlabetn
  10. I was eyeing that Saiga 12-ga that Dan had sitting on the rack, a week or so ago... It wasn't pretty, but something like that has potential for 3-gun or something.
  11. From what I can see, the 90gr Federal HS has adequete penetration and expansion: http://www.brassfetcher.com/90%20grain%20Federal%20Personal%20Defense%20Hydra-Shok.html 80gr Cor-Bon didn't do very well at all: http://www.brassfetcher.com/380DPX.html Some XTP and Gold-Dot handloads were in-between: http://www.brassfetcher.com/Various%20.380ACP%20handloads.html Seems to me that a 90+gr JHP is the way to go, for proper penetration The FMJ probably assures reliability... A lighter bullet of that type would likely enhance energy and reduce chances of over-penetration.
  12. Mossburg M590A1 here... And until recently had a Benelli M1S90 Tactical 'safe-queen'. I'm considering a Rem 870 or 1100 Tactical next, when I get tired of replacing parts on the rattly old Mossy.
  13. I've tried to "limp-wrist" every XD which I have owned, and a few of the others which I've fired... I couldn't get it to happen, even to the point of the gun nearly falling out of my hand, they all ejected and fed without a hiccup. I've come across few pistols which could handle this... namely Sig and Beretta, in my experience. Even some models of the 'uber-reliable' Glock are markedly prone to limp-wrist issues... I believe that it may have something to do with the dual-buffered recoil setup of the XD, which has a weak tensioning spring and a heavy primary spring. This allows the slide to accelerate quickly, initially, but in a controlled manner. Still, the 5" models have only a single spring... And they are just as reliable, from my experience. I don't see much of a point in messing with the recoil system of a carry-gun... too many variables to screw up which the designers would be cursing you for, if they knew. I would only increase spring-tension on a gun which got a steady (darn near exclusive) diet of hot ammo. I would only reduce the tension in a non-carry gun which I used watered-down reloads, and needed to ensure function.
  14. I have heard of cases in which the gun which was discharged in self-defense, and yet it was returned to the owner when the officers/detective finished taking down the police report, taking pictures, and recorded the S/N. And I have heard of other cases in which ALL of the shooters' firearms were confiscated, for a long period of time... Even if the case is clear-cut, and it is not likely that charges will be filed against the shooter, I would expect that the subject firearm would be taken as evidence for a few weeks, or longer, possibly until the criminal case against the person it was used upon was underway.
  15. Get a lock-box that fits under the seat... and perhaps some OC spray, if you feel at risk while walking to & from your car.
  16. Tough choice... potentially... your life, or your job. I have an idea of what I would do, and I don't care to post that on the internet. But, each person has to decide their priorities for themselves.
  17. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has introduced the 2007 Assault Weapons Ban to Congress: H.R.1022 Title: To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Rep McCarthy, Carolyn [NY-4] (introduced 2/13/2007) Cosponsors (None) Latest Major Action: 2/13/2007 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. Let's get the letters and phone-calls started...
  18. I'm quite confident that in both cases, the guns themselves were unwilling participants... The blame should be on the actors, not the objects. The outcome could have easily been the same (or worse) if the men had used an SUV to run over the victims. The public in general are lemmings.
  19. Not to be argumentative, since I do respect that you deal with training issues regularly on a professional basis; but it seems to me that the singular nature of your bias towards Glock IS exactly what you are accusing me of... The few chances I have had the opportunity to help someone find what works for them, I did NOT try to steer them away from Glocks... but simply allowed them to make an intelligent decision with all of the facts, features and differences readily available to compare and understand. I don't dislike Glocks... I simply have no use for them when so many other models work better for me, personally, and am not ashamed to admit that when asked. I have also shot with a few folks who took to the Glock grip-angle more naturally than the other pistols... For them I bear no criticism. If I was biased, I would never suggest to a new shooter that Glocks were suitable. The opposite of that is veritably true. However, what you describe is like suggesting that only those vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, ABS, and traction-control are practical for every single person and application. When, in fact, reality dictates that specific roles require specific solutions. Regards,
  20. The reasons that I don't carry a Glock are not ignorance, incompetence, fear or inexperience... Simply personal preference. Most of the new shooters whom I have known actually want a Glock initially, simply because the brand is a household name due to media exposure or vague opinion, and haven't been exposed to other options yet. So, I get them to rent & try one... then I hand them one of my XDs, Sigs or 1911, and with one more noticeably, usually their groups improve or they express greater comfort or control. Preference between handgun makes is an acquired taste... different people are in-expicably more naturally suited by certain characteristics and ergonomics... training simply makes a person more comfortable with their capabilities, regardless of the specific tools used.
  21. I want an XD-10 (10mm) 4" Compact and 5" Tactical. I figure that the Compact could probably hold 11 or 12+1, and the Tactical could fit 15+1. I would buy each of those in a heartbeat. Or, a .45 acp/gap SA XD SubCompact 3" Or, a .357sig SA XD SubCompact 3" (another one which I would buy in a heartbeat) Another good idea would be a 10mm Sig P220... A factory .357sig Beretta 92/96 or PX-4... A factory .357sig Browning High-Power... A 10mm H&K USP or USPc... I know you asked about handguns... but I would love a Bull-Pup frame 12ga pump shotgun too. Or, a 20/12ga AR-15 upper... Oh well...
  22. I was in Chattanooga this weekend... Spent my wife's birthday seeing the sights and over-nighting at the Choo-Choo, in one of their rail-cars. The XD didn't leave my side. Welcome!!!
  23. I've bought a gun or two off of there, and various accessories. You've really got to be patient and agile to get the best deals on desireable stuff... I got my like-new P239 through GunBroker off of a no-reserve auction, $420... But, those deals don't come along often. I learned long ago that popular guns are at least (or more) expensive on GunBroker than some local gun-shops... I check them out sometimes once a week, unless I'm watching a particular auction. ImpactGuns and BudsGunShop have better deals 99% of the time.
  24. Yep, many over there have their holsters strapped on too tight... One cannot read a thread without running into some foolishness complaining about racism or sexual-orientation differences being the motive for every political/civil-rights issue under the sun, or complaining about how everyone argues too much about caliber and pistol make... like they expect hundreds of different people with strong opinions to just 'get along' without the occasional heated debate. The debates aren't even as fun anymore, since there are so many fools (doofuses) who post utter nonsense... doo·fus (dfs) n. pl. doo·fus·es Slang An incompetent, foolish, or stupid person.
