  1. The next time I'm in Columbia I'll take a picture of the inside of the Shadybrook Cinema. In the lobby on a piece of tinted glass with the words facing inward (on the other side of the glass is a little vestibule with an ATM I think) is a bulleted list that reads something like: * No Outside food or drink. * Shirt and shoes required. * For insurance purposes, no cell phones, guns or cameras. Easily walked by when coming in one of the other 4 front doors if you don't look behind the ATM at the old faded RTA you'd miss it. I carried in there a few times before I noticed the sign and nobody said anything to me about it, so either my T-shirt did a better job of hiding my OWB 1911 than I thought or they don't really care. Even so, I don't carry there anymore - and prefer not to go there unless Thoroughbred 20 is my only other alternative. Some people say it's a wink and a nod to the "gun crowd" when they post small signs or signs that don't meet the letter of the law. I think it's the opposite - I always feel like the owner is snickering behind his hand like Muttley, waiting to jump out and go "AH HA! I got ya! What, you didn't see the sign? Boo hoo, tell it to the judge." - V
  2. At the last Goodman show in Nashville there was a guy selling two Remington 597 .22 rifles for $109. I got mine on my 18th birthday and it's still shooting. Not nearly as heavy as my Mosin Nagant 91/30 but it's no featherweight either. I've got two of the bigger (25 or 30 shot?) magazines for it but I think it came with the 10-round I use when I'm on a bench. A google search showed lots of stock options.
  3. I've had this dusty, beat up old Arkansas Tri-Hone bouncing around my garage and workshop for the better part of my life. I bought it when I was about 10 years old when I bought the case knife I still carry and my uncle taught me how to use it. Since then, I've made, bought or acquired about a thousand knives and this old thing has sharpened them all - poorly. It's not the stone, I'm sure. I am just really awful at keeping the correct angle of the knife to the stone so it never winds up with a consistent edge. I've come to grips with that. Once upon a time it looked just like this one: Now the wood is all cracked and gray, the base is missing and that little plastic angle guide is long, long gone. And worse yet - the stones are all sway-backed and loaded with oil residue, iron filings and whatever else it's picked up over the past 20 years. I've come to grips with the fact that it's time to get something new. So I picked up a Smith's stone thinking metal must be better, right? But see my previous comment about angles. In fairness, this stone did a GREAT job sharpening all my chisels - including the oddly shaped one I use to punch the little lines onto the leaf-shaped things I make as decoration for fireplace tools, hanging hooks, etc. And did a swell job of squaring off said leaf-y tool's edge when I determined that sharp wasn't better. But I just can't get an edge on a knife with it for the life of me. I started to blame the knife (an in-expensive kitchen knife) but when I tried another (an older Gerber that I've had for years and had great luck sharpening to hair-shaving sharpness in the past on the tri-hone) I came to the determination that the problem is either me or the stone. In either case, something's got to change. At Academy this past weekend picking up some 9mm for this weekend's range trip I saw some of these on the sale rack: http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_32446_-1?Ntt=sharpener&Ntk=All Does anyone have any experience with these Lansky sharpening systems? I'm loathe to pay $30 for a sharpener when I can get a new Tri-hone for that - but even with the Tri-hone my skill was never great. Does the metal guide and clamp system actually help or is it just a gimmick? There was a little $7 stand that the whole thing mounts on - I suppose that's a must for a consistent edge? Anybody have any other thoughts on bargian-priced sharpening systems that work? This would primarily be for pocket knives and the occasional work or camp knife but if I could use it to sharpen the odd knife or chisel that comes out of the shop, more's the better.
  4. The first time you grab the busy-end of a falling pair of blacksmithing tongs you learn the hard way to let things fall. Looking like an idiot while you pick up your hot iron (or shootin' iron) is better than BLEEDING like an idiot while you wait for the ambulance.
  5. I've posted very long winded endorsements for HiPoint - and especially the HiPoint 995TS - in the past. To sum up: They're great and everyone should own one. haha! I've got thousands and thousands of rounds through mine (my wife's actually) and it remains our go-to "bump in the night" gun for her. Meanwhile, I love it for the range. She routinely and reliably makes 100 yard headshots on her zombie clown targets up at CHMR with the factory peep site. The only time we've ever had a problem with it was with the ejector. I got mad until someone told me about their warranty. When I called, their customer service blew me away. They replaced everything but the barrel and receiver - and sent me two free mags for my trouble. And the tech that did the work called me personally before he started the work to see what all was going wrong with it and then called after I got it back to make sure it was all sorted out and talk to me about what ammo I should use at the range to get the best accuracy out of it (CCI - he was right). I'm going to be getting a second one soon (so my wife and I don't have to fight over it at the range) - maybe in .45? - and probably one of their 9mm handguns to fill the role of "range toy" when I don't feel like throwing .45 calibre dollar bills downrange. Fun gun, great customer service and lifetime warranty? Why don't you have one yet?
  6. My wife says I'm a knife snob. I'm very picky about what I'll carry because I use my knife for everything - but brand doesn't matter at all. My requirements are simpler than that: It's got to be well made of quality materials, be sharp and stay sharp, have a good stout clip and I just flat refuse to pay more than $30 for it. Believe it or not, this excludes a lot of knives. I prefer it to be reasonably discreet for its size, but that's not really important enough to fit into my "qualifications". For my EDC I bought a Kershaw Compound at the recommendation of some folks on this board. I had to take the clip off and put some LockTite on the threads because it kept working loose, but once that was done I carried it every day. It was a good solid knife that I used for everything from emergency cuticle trimmings to breaking down boxes. At the company bar-b-que I even used it to fashion a hotdog fork and spatula from two sticks and a beer can when everyone realized we didn't have grilling tools. Even after shredding a beer can it was as sharp as the day I bought it. Great knife at a great price (less than $20 on Woot! one day.) I lost the thing two weeks ago. One day it was on my nightstand with the rest of my pocket dump stuff, the next it wasn't. I don't know if it wormed its way out of my pocket somewhere or if my wife wandered off with it to use for some chore but it's gone. I fully plan to buy another when I can find one (non-serrated) for under $20 again. I'll probably buy 3 so this doesn't happen again. Since my Compound's vanishied I'm back to carrying my old faithful CKRT Kasper. Like the Kershaw I had to put LockTite on the threads for the pocket clip. I don't like that the pocket clip cant' be switched for tip-up carry like the Compound but it's a good reliable knife that does everything the Compound does without the assisted open. The blade is much thicker and fatter than the Compound so it looks more intimidating in my pocket and especially in my hand - so it doesn't meet my "discrete" semi-qualification at all. A co-worker even complained to HR on me for having it, calling it a "hunting knife" when I used it to open a package.
  7. Do you have a link to the base pads you're talking about Kimbercarry?
  8. Perfect. Thanks! 3 used for the price of 1 new and I'm a happy camper.
  9. I tried a Google search but couldn't really come up with a specific answer to this - so I decided that the fine folks of TGO would likely know! As I've said in other threads, I carry a Rock Island 1911-CS in .45 that uses the shorter 7-round magazines. I have two magazines that I've run about 1,500 rounds through collectively that I carry and rely on. A friend at work recently sold his Kimber 1911 and has 3 of the full-size 8-round Wilson Combat magazines that he's looking to sell to me along with some ammunition. I took one home last night and slid it into the magwell. It seemed to fit and lock into place. The mag release worked fine and I was able to cycle the slide by hand to cycle all 8+1 without any issues. Try as I might, I couldn't make the mags even wiggle unless I hit the mag release. Will these work for range mags? Obviously I'm not going to carry the gun with an extra inch of magazine sticking out the bottom of the grip, but do you fine folks see any reason that I wouldn't use them in my 1911-CS when I take it to the range? They're in great shape, so I figure worst case scenario I pick them up for $15 each, use them a few times and sell them for what I've got into them or more. But I don't want to get to the range and find myself in an unsafe scenario because I was too proud to ask a long-winded question.
  10. I've been thinking about getting one of these: http://www.homedepot...zer-129974.html And using some of the smaller tackle organizers in the pockets to hold my brushes, q-tips and the like while the cleaning rods (bound with velcro straps) and bottles/cans/tubes go in the bucket. Out of the way, but easily accessed. I keep my gun cleaning supplies in a closet, so the bucket gives me some added insurance over a cloth bag or even a tackle box if something oily or acidic were to spring a leak or spill. I haven't actually pulled the proverbial trigger on the idea yet so I don't know how it would work, but I figure I can always use it for its intended purpose (organizing tools on my workbench) if it didn't work out for gun cleaning junk supplies. Just a thought.
  11. Everyone above was correct. They were not posted with a gunbuster. They did have a popcorn buster, though! No outside food or drinks, but outside .45s are A-OK, as it should be. Thanks everyone for the replies. And sorry about the lack of a "?" in the thread title. I'd have sworn I had one, but when I hit submit I noticed it was gone. Tried to change it, but too late then. I've had some bad experiences with Carmike, so I was really surprised to have had a pleasant evening - except for the guy next to me pouring whiskey into his fountain drink (he was kind enough to offer to those around him before getting kicked out) and the couple behind me getting frisky under a blanket.
  12. I usually only do business with Shadybrook Cinemas in Columbia for my Moviegoing needs (when the wife doesn't fall for the "We'll just rent one on Pay Per View and stay in.") as they've got better service, friendlier staff and a cleaner theatre (this concludes the shameless plug for a good local business). A friend Fandango'd some tickets for Carmike Thoroughbred 20 tonight for a 7:00 showing of the new Avengers movie and I'm wondering if anyone has been there recently and can tell me if they're properly posted? The idea of leaving the .45 in the car has very little appeal to me and I'd hate to drive all the way out there just to drive back to drop the gun off. - Bob
  13. Thanks for this tip! Tried it in my wife's cheap red dot on her Hi-Point and was startled how well it worked. Good tip.
  14. Not as clumsy or random as a Glock, an elegant weapon from a more civilized age? The story of "is that a real gun!" reminded me of a friend knocking on my door a few weekends ago while I was vacuuming. He sees my gun on my belt and goes "Do you always clean with a sidearm?" My answer of "No, sometimes I use the shotgun for the really tough dust bunnies. " made Dr. Pepper shoot out my wife's nose behind me.
  15. I live about a half mile away from a Kroger that shares a parking lot with a Subway restaurant. This past weekend I was doing some "spring cleaning" around the house and had my 1911 on waistband on a paddle holster. Around mid-day a buddy came over for beers and video games ("Sorry hun. I have to stop cleaning the garage and entertain our *guest*!"). We decided to go to the Subway for sandwiches and then hit up Kroger for sodas. I absentmindedly neglected to switch over to my IWB holster when we left the house, leaving me basically open carrying. My T-Shirt was over the butt of the gun but it didn't cover the holster or the end of the barrel. This opened the door for two amusing stories, back to back. 1.) While in the Subway waiting in line for our lunch, my buddy went to sit down while I ordered (his subtle way of saying "You're buying, Viracnis"). While he was sitting, a woman with two children came into the store and was standing in line behind me. Her youngest daughter (maybe 5) was running up and down the length of the dining area singing and laughing and carrying on as 5-year-olds often do when left unattended. After a few minutes of staring at my buddy across the room, she calls her daughter over and whispers loud enough for everyone in the place to hear "You can play, but stay away from that man over there, ok?" as she pointed directly at my buddy. I raised my eyebrow at her and she said "He looks shabby and I think he has a gun". I'd been standing next to her for the better part of 5 minutes with my gun-side toward her carrying on waistband. She was right at eye level with it as she was whispering this to her daughter. My buddy did not have a gun, he refuses to carry his because of the reactions he gets. He had a paperback book in the pocket of his cargo pants that she had been eyeing the entire time she'd been in the store. Always one to rise to the occasion of harassing stupid people I said "Oh, I understand. I wouldn't let Anthony around my kids, either." She got the point and shut up pretty quick. 2.) So while I was telling him about that story (he's been practicing his quick draw on that "Game of Thrones" paperback for the next encounter) we head over to Kroger. After wandering around for a while we decide he's paying for the sodas (payback for lunch) and I'm buying a box of chocolate chip cookies. So I'm standing in the checkout line with a $2 box of cookies on the belt with $3 in cash sitting on top of the box. I'm chatting with my buddy - a lively debate on the real-world application of a contained plasma field, probably - as the cashier is ringing up my purchase and making change for my $3 when he suddenly stops dead and turns white as a sheet. I'm not paying any attention, just standing there with my hand out waiting for my receipt and change while I'm making some cunning point in our debate when Anthony grins at me in his superior way and points toward the cashier. I stop talking and look his way, greeting him by name on his nametag and asking what the problem is. The exchange went like this: Me: Hello <cashier>, is everything ok? Did I not give you enough? Cashier: What's that? Me: What's what? Cashier: Is that a gun? Me: Oh! Jeeze, I forgot about that. Sorry, yes it is. Cashier: Are you robbing us? Take your time here. Really let that sink in. I've got answers prepared for most questions that might be asked of me while carrying... but that one floored me. I had no rational, reasonable and detailed response that would have eased the kids fears. I debated something along the lines of "Yeah, but my wife made me promise I'd buy her a box of cookies first" or even "Are you kidding? At these prices, I'm getting robbed!" but eventually settled on a more sedate "No, sir." as I took my cookies and my change and left the store to the soundtrack of my buddy's peals of laughter and sarcastic comments. - Viracnis - AKA: The cookie bandit of Spring Hill.
  16. Everywhere but work and at home: A Rock Island Armory 1911-CS in .45 ACP carried in an Old Faithful Premium IWB Holster Kit. At home: Same gun, some cheap OWB paddle holster that's super comfortable. At work: I carry the burden of knowing that either the company doesn't care if a disgruntled employee/customer/random stranger goes on a killing spree or the company hasn't thought through their policy to realize their rules aren't protection from that. And a knife.
  17. This might have already been posted. Sorry if it has - I didn't see it anywhere. http://www.dailytech...rticle24276.htm Edit: Interesting that Wikipedia doesn't mention anything about violence or firestarting, nor of the supposed aimless shuffling that the article did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nodding_disease Could it be that the media "expanded the truth" to drive traffic to their article? Or should I go conspiracy nut and say that the government is covering up the zombie effects? Either way I'm thinking it is time to increase my ammo supply ;P
  18. My wife called my 1911 "Bells" the other day. The conversation went something like this: Random Irritating Friend: Hey <Viracnis>, you coming to my St. Patty's Day party on Saturday? Me: Will your other friends be there? RIF: Of course! Me: No. Wife: He'll be there with Bells on! The name suits her, so I let it slide.
  19. Can't have the Kahr having all the fun. I think I fall somewhere between RCLARK and OhShoot. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. Rock Island Armory 1911-CS in .45ACP Old Faithful IWB Tuckable Holster kit Extra Magazine in a generic Academy OWB knife pouch CKRT Kasper (soon to be replaced with a Kershaw Contour) Leatherman Style CS Leatherman Surge Inova flashlight (I have two - I don't know what model) Uniball Vision Needle pen ACE pocket comb Unnamed wallet A little black notebook I picked up at Target Car keys with key to the car safe and a 16gb Staples memory key Black Zippo my wife bought me the day we got married. Not Shown - HTC Inspire (Used to take the picture). When I wear jeans I ditch the two Leatherman (Leathermen? Leathermens?) in favor of a 3-bladed bone handled knife that I've carried for about 15 years now. No idea the make or model - the little brass plaque on the handle telling the make and model fell off when I fell off a ladder and landed on the knife and a bottle of super glue in my pocket (I was fixing a dryer vent, if you're curious). Removing the superglue removed the brass plaque but the knife still cuts fine. I like RCLARK's little prybar. I've seen those around but never really had a notion to carry one. The more I think of it the better idea that is sounding. They're cheap on the 'net, but I've got a few hundred pounds of scrap tool steel hidin' out in the garage that are just begging me to fire up the old forge. Might be a good project for me. Thanks for the inspiration!
  20. "Shoot? Oh, heavens no. I'm buying this for the gunpowder. I feed it to my Velociraptor to make him meaner."
  21. I came to this thread expecting to see a bunch of $200 "What a beautiful knife - thank God I can't afford it" knives and OhShoot has to go and post this one. My wallet is now $20 lighter and Amazon $20 richer. Thanks for the recommendation!
  22. At one point in the episode someone (T-Dog?) handed Daryl a gun that was identified as "Dale's Gun". Daryl said "I wish I knew what happened to mine" (to paraphrase). So he's concerned but I doubt a missing gun has a high priority given everything else going on. Edit: Gah, serves me right for not going to the next page before replying. DaddyO beat me to it.
  23. Got mine last month. It was in my mailbox the 22nd day after I got printed. Felt like torture after about day 10 though. Here's hoping for a speedy turn around for yours!
  24. Someone on here turned me on to these kits: http://oldfaithfulholsters.com/ I've ordered my first one and it should be here in the next day or so. Looks like a pretty good all-around kit to fit any pistol. I'll be ordering another for my wife's Pheonix HP22 just for grins. He sells Kydex under the Holster Parts link.
  25. Congrats! 25ish days, eh? Today's day 21 for me - still no permit. Hopefully in the next day or two. My holster may get here before I get my permit.
