I agree with Chucktshoes, that’s a low budget for entry into the NVG game. I have looked through a couple sub $1k offerings and honestly they were worse than what our military was using back in the 90s. If you’ve never used any you might not know the difference, but then you’d be pissed when you had a chance to see what another $1k could have gotten you. Not saying this to discourage you, just wanting to save you some frustration. It’s not like the difference between a $1k rifle and a $2k rifle. You can shoot and enjoy both of those from day one. It’s more like the difference between putting on a pair of sun glasses that sat at the bottom of a river all year and a pair you just bought at the store.

For about 15 years I’ve been storing my ammo in 50 cal cans with the rubber gasket. Ive weeded out all the plastic containers and any containers with a foam gasket. I keep https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1022530137?pid=465276 one of these desiccant packs in each ammo can. All my ammo cans are stored on a shelf unit in my garage. It’s not exactly climate controlled. Every 6 months I pull the desiccant packs out and “recharge” them in the oven. Often times they have not turned all the way pink when I recharge them. I had a few Harbor Freight 50 cal cans that weren’t up to snuff and they would not last the whole six months without the desiccant turning pink, so I got rid of them. Some of these cans I get into a couple times a month, some not at all in 6 months. I figure some moisture naturally occurs in the cans due to the bipolar temperatures changes we have here in TN, which is why I use a larger desiccant pack than needed for that size. I have been pretty meticulous with this, as I am admittedly OCD about my ammo storage/inventory etc… I have seen similar situations like what 1gewehr described above, and been completely mystified about how the ammo can stay good in horrible conditions like that. Also noteworthy, at Fort Lewis in the mid 2000’s we were being issued green tip ammo dated from the Vietnam era, and it was shooting just fine. Down range we would get brand new stuff of course, but for range use we were still burning through the old inventory. I got to take a tour of the base AHA (Ammo Holding Area) one time, and man was that a site to behold. Several warehouse type buildings with pallets of ammo as far as the eye could see. Oh and that Vietnam ammo was just stored in ammo cans, no desiccant. And the warehouse it had sat in all those years wasn’t really climate controlled, just reasonably dry.

I only have about 500 rounds through mine, mainly because ammo is expensive as you noted, and it was hard to find for awhile so I wasn’t wanting to blow my whole wad. I just looked at my round count notes and I have had 11 malfunctions from mine, which is in its original configuration. I’m not sure how I missed the memo about the 40grn ammo being preferred… just hearing that for the first time here, but according to my notes at least 8 of those malfunctions were shooting other than 40grn. I can also see how the rim overlap in the magazine could easily happen. I have really enjoyed mine so far, shoots accurately and is light enough to throw in a camelback when hiking.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this Spots. I’m 41 myself, and as you described I started expanding my firearms pallete a bit once I hit my 30s and had a bit of fun money to throw around. The best thing about the modern day firearms industry is that there is literally something for every taste, and some of the manufacturers are blending old with new, as noted in several of the new lever gun offerings, which has broadened interest for some of the “old timer” guns. Not sure how many of you are on instagram or watch firearms channels on YouTube, but I’ve been seeing almost as many leverguns as anything else lately.

Damn. Hate to see this. Glad to hear he and the family got out ok. From what I’ve read so far about that fire, the wind was pushing it faster than they could get fire breaks in place to stop it or slow it down. Our prayers are with your brother and those effected.

I was fortunate enough to track down a Marlin Dark 45/70 late last year, after looking for one ever since they released them in 2019. The last two times I’ve taken it to the range I’ve had guys offer more than double what I paid for it. Henry also released a dark line, though I don’t like the look and feel of it quite as much. I’ve been watching several YouTube videos this week about the Ruger/Marlin SBL 45/70s that are already in the hands of the community influencers and it sounds like they are pretty nice. I’ve always had a think for the Chiappas as well, but they are REALLY proud of them.

I’m stuck at home with COVID as we speak. Myself and two coworkers all came down with it on Monday, presumably due to several recent exposures at work. There have been an uptick of cases that we’ve been transporting to the hospital, almost all vaccinated but elderly or with obvious comorbidities. Of the three of us one is vaccinated and boostered, his only symptom is loss of taste and smell. His wife (also vaccinated and boosted) came down with it yesterday and she is not having as smooth a go as he is. I think she got the infusion therapy today. Myself and the other guy are unvaccinated and having very mild symptoms. I honestly would have thought it a head cold if the other guys hadn’t got it too. So far OTC cold meds are keeping me normal but certainly going stir crazy. CDC changed their quarantine from 10-5 days, so if I’m not feeling any worse by Saturday I get to go back to work. The best thing ANY of us can do going forward is take some steps (big or small) to improve your personal health situation. Regardless of your age or situation, it’s not too late to make some tweaks in your day to day life that will literally pay dividends toward the quality of time you have left. A Doctor once told me (while encouraging me to loose weight) that once we reach 50, we have the body we deserve. From my observations I’d say he was spot on. The majority of medical patients that I personally interact with are 60 and over, and there is a HUGE spectrum of quality of life at that age. We will all pass on some day, there’s no cheating that, but we do have some say in the quality of the days leading up to that.

I have two of them for my G48. No reliability issues at all thus far (300ish rounds). I am waiting on a mag release to come in. Was back ordered around Black Friday but should be here any day. I have noticed that the OEM plastic one is getting chewed up by the metal mag, which is exactly why they recommend switching them out to the metal version. The first few times loading the mags it was REALLY tight getting the 15th round in. It’s gotten a little easier but it is still tighter than most mags I load. The first time loading the mag it was even a challenge to get the full mag inserted and seated with the slide forward. After the first 100 rounds or so that was no longer a problem. At this point I have as much confidence in them as anything else. I will eventually get a few more, maybe if they ever go on sale. They have called the G48/43x the G19 killer. I’d say these S15 mags are the nails in the coffin.

I can tell you that I grew up in a household that handled the holidays the same way you do with your kids. While I can tell you now as an adult that I can understand the religious theory behind it, I will also tell you that me and my sibling have always resented my parents for it. My wife and I are both Christians and we feel like we have been able to provide a good balance of the truth and the fun of all the Holidays. My parents still sound like you and are pretty verbal about their disapproval, which has resulted in them loosing out in a lot of valuable time with their grandkids as a result. Completely your choice Sir, but I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you one perspective of those choices through the eyes of a kid that lived it.
