I'm guessing the shooter is probably Latino. In which case MSM will let this quietly go away as he doesn't fit their agenda. I've noticed that there has been no rush to identify him and delve into his personal life. Usually by now, there would be full stories covering his full name and all sorts of sordid details about his life.

Anybody remember the guy who shot up the Kroger store in Collierville a year or so back? Probably not. He was a Pacific Islander and didn't fit the agenda. MSM dropped that story real quick.

Could be and that makes sense. But I would think that the FBI would have at least one agent that could speak Spanish in Dallas. That's what led to my jump to a case of possible terrorism, with the family speaking Arabic, Persian or perhaps Russo ethnic or African language.

  2. When I started this thread, I was thinking about the newly passed Washington State Assault Rifle legislation.

You can read the full text of the law here.  https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2023-24/Pdf/Bills/House Passed Legislature/1240-S.PL.pdf#page=1

Surprisingly, the Ruger Mini rifles are not named, nor are M1 Carbines, or M1 Garands. However the Springfield Armory M1A and all it's forms and the SKS is (honestly, this makes zero sense to me). Nor are most U.S. produced PCCs.

  3. And one more time… 🤬

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/03/us/atlanta-midtown-shooting

FOXNEWS has photos of the alleged gunman. https://www.foxnews.com/us/atlanta-active-shooter-situation-leaves-multiple-people-injured-police-say

Per a CBS News interview from a woman leaving the hospital, she was told that the shooter was there for Psychological evaluation. When pressed how she knew that, she said that several people she knew told her that and she had also heard it on the police radios officers were carrying.

Police say the do know the shooter’s identity and that they are looking for him.

I hate that they call it "lifetime" fluid. It's not. Good call on not having it flushed. Drain and fill is safer but keep in mind that only gets out 1/3 of the old fluid. That's why I did a series of drain and fills over the course of a thousand miles or so.

    I wondered about doing that...

You could always try servicing the transmission first if it's never been done. I do drain+fills on my 2002 Tundra transmission. 4 quarts out, 4 in.

I just drove my 2002 to Arizona and back. Never selling it.

It has a sealed transmission (pain in the ass) and has never been changed as far as I know. I bought it with 129K on it. But I think I will have it serviced and just have the fluid drained (not pressure flushed) and see if that helps.

Well, a levergun in .357 or 44mag with a 16” barrel would be a good choice. Faster to cycle than a bolt action. An older Remington semiautomatic (model 81 or model 750) in 30.06 or .35 Remington would be good as well.

The lever gun in a pistol caliber will hold more rounds.

I'd also go with a pistol caliber lever gun. Preferably a 16" Trapper model. Short, light, fast and easy to handle. Plus you can top off the magazine as you go.

I had a Marlin 336 (.30-30) that I put a Williams peep sight on. It was a great deer gun in the thick and swampy piney woods of my youth.

For S's & G's I ran it through a few short course stages, close to intermediate range. It held it's on against AR's/AK's (we shot a lot of AK's back then) until it was time to reload. Even loading off a butt-cuff it was still slow.

But, if I could not have an AR or an AK a lever gun would certainly suffice.

I agree with others that a pistol caliber could be an advantage. But if such legislation comes down the pike I would think it would target capacity as one of it's primary restrictions. Certainly hope not...but hope isn't a good plan.

I actually, have this very rifle.  It's a Rossi M92 in .38/.357 with a 16" barrel. Love shooting it!

Another rifle, I'm actually considering purchasing is a Ruger Ranch rifle in 5.56x45 NATO. As soon as I find one, I plan to purchase it. I plan on putting a RDS on it. I could see this possibly being a better choice, due to a longer range round. The fact that it could also take AR mags is a plus, since I have several 10 round AR mags.  I think this would be compliant in pretty much every state.

    Mini 14/Mini30?

I guess I should have been clearer. I really meant to say like the ban Washington State just enacted. They basically banned all semi-autos and even went to far as to name them. You won't even be able to get repair parts for them.

But if the Mini-14/30 were not banned, then I would think this would be the way to go, even though I think they are crappy rifles, based on the two that I owned back in the 90s. Neither would group worth a crap after 10 or 15 rounds.

I’m thinking a lot if us have that agreement with our wives. If I have a little extra after a sale/purchase, I do try to spend a little on her for the brownie points.

I would say to pick up a lever gun, but that may be a rabbit hole you don’t want to fall into.

(anyone have a lever gun in Marlin 444 they are looking to part ways with?)

If anyone knows about that rabbit hole, it's you! 😄

  9. What if we see a nationwide ban on semi-auto sporting rifles like the AR15/AK47, like what Washington State just enacted, in the next several years; what would be the next best self-defense/hunting rifle, in your opinion? What action and caliber would you choose? It probably should be compliant in all 50 states.

I'm interested to see your all's opinions on the rifles, not politics.

  10. The M1A is a great rifle, but if I were to buy something like that, I'd be mighty tempted to add another caliber and buy a M1 Garand along with a bunch of ammunition and clips for it (it'd be about the same cost). For me, those just have a lot more history and pizzazz than the M1A.

I use to shoot NM M14s for the Army in competition, and if they're built for right, they're super fun! But if it's just a run of the meal M1A. it's just another AR or AK rifle, just heavier. And to me, anymore, those are just meh too.

  11. I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra, with 207K. We just took it to Mrytle Beach last weekend and we pull a camper about once a month with it, for craft shows. I notice when it's cold, that the transmission tends to hesitate. My wife and I were talking about it replacing it in a couple of years, but with prices the way they are, we may just put a new transmission in in and keep it. I retire in the next 7 years, and I cannot for the life of me see spending $60+ grand on a new truck!  It's just ridiculous!!!

You could order one of these. As a photographer, I use many, many of their AA's for various purposes. The only difference between a AA and C or D are simply their capacity. The voltages are all 1.5V. As such, a kit like the one linked you would give you a lot of capabilities. The AA's fit in the D sleeves and thus would work in these lights. You'd have reduced runtime compared to an actual D battery but you'd have many AA's to fill it with.

These re-chargeables are amazing, they claim after charging and setting on the shelf they'd have roughly 70% of that charge. The claim roughly 2,100 charge cycles as well. Owning Eneloops is like joining a cult...

As far as these lights go, I'd love to pick one up for that price.

I think that's a good deal! That's just twice as much as I paid for the pack of off brand D Batteries.

I found these. More expensive by a bit but cheaper than a trip for most people.

That's what I got.  Brightness is about the same as the old style military flashlights, with the incandescent blubs.

  13. Played some in HS and college and found it fun. Then life caught up with me. Cool that you still enjoy it though! I wouldn't mind picking it up again, with the right group.

I have enjoyed playing Skyrim on the computer and console, which is D&D related. My kids and me were all into it at one point.
