I'm familiar with a case where a Woman with zero knowledge and experience was SOLD an XD40. Unfortunately she didn't have the strength or confidence to rack a round into the chamber. And this Lady really had some reasons to fear for her life. I told her she needed a revolver. Never heard the final outcome of that situation.

For what it's worth, I've had several Taurus revolvers and 2 9mm Autos over a 35 year period. Had to send one model 65 back for realignment of barrel. When returned it was a shooter.  No others had issues. And that was back in the 80's. Currently have SS Tracker in .41 Mag. 10 years, 300+ rounds = no problems. More accurate than some of the N-frames I've had.  Not as accurate as an old Python or a new Super Redhawk. BUT dollar for dollar, worth me keeping.   And I think I'm gonna buy one of the Taurus 405's...........................................just for plinking.

  I would agree 'cause they got way more money than I, and they're living in way less comfort, risking way more chance of injury or death. I don't havta go outside to take a crap and I've yet to see Moose, Grizzly, Kodiak, or Wolf when I traipse thru my woods. And if I happen to suffer a heart-attack or accidentally get a severe cut there is a small satellite EMT/Fire Station about 25 mins. away. And nicely paved roads in between.

  +1     and agreed on effective range.  Might try some Fed. rat shot IF I can find any. I remember those darn Fed. 44 shotshells were way to small dia. to crimp into 44 cases. Hope they fixed that since 1970.

I had a couple of Kershaws back in the 80's. Black Pony and Black Colt I believe. They really know how to put an edge on those blades.

I'm afraid it would require numerous cages IF I were to try that method.  They're just target practice out here.

Yeah, that's the hook for me. Weapons that I can't afford, or would never put that much money into, and weapons I never knew existed.

I know there have to be dedicated veiwers of this show. Incredible weapons on display and actually being used. I'd be happy just to run my favorite sa revolver thru one of their creative courses. Let alone shooting tricked-out full race .45 or that OBR.

That's interesting information.  Guess only the producer/s of the show would know how much the family is subsidized per episode but again, the equipment, the hand tools, the fencing materials, the building materials, and most of the guns don't look new. About the newest thing I saw was that Ruger Stainless Blackhawk.

  You bring up a good point about the expensive machinery. It crossed my mind when I saw that shovel used for the outhouse dig. But none of that equipment looked all that new. Guess it could be acquired over a long period or purchased after the new wore off.

I saw that yesterday. Her Brother spent some time in the lower 48 persuing a musical career.  It's really quite a family. No room for sissies.

Frankly, I'm not much on the Hollywood idea of reality with crap like Big Brother, Survivor, etc. But this caught my eye more or less for the scenery and the fact these people were dealing with their very existence.  I'm not detecting a whole lot of fabricated drama. And yes I completely agree that the design of a double-action revolver tops most singles.  To beat it all, not only was this novice female dealing with 300gr. cannon loads but she had nothing but the stock wood grips to try to hold on to. For my money a .41 Mag in any configured revolver would have been the better choice. Less recoil and likely a little more penetration. I never had any great desire to visit Alaska but seeing some of the topography has changed my mind. For all of you that have spent some time up there, I'm envious.

Anybody else watch episodes of this reality based programs? Fasinating to me. They appear to know their weapons and how to use them. One of the sons mentioned both the .308 and the venerable .284. Both known for their accuracy. But the scene with one of the Wives mustering up the courage to pull the trigger on a 4&5/8" single-action Ruger 44 mag. was a little humorous. The look on her face after the first round; priceless.  I can think of several alternatives to that firearm for a Woman. Especially someone not use to firing a hand cannon. I believe the husband was loading 300 gr. flat-nose bear-killers into the weapon. Not the most fun round to set-off by any stretch.

Thanks for that Link. I had to call 6 numbers in order to find one that was either working or the voice mailbox was not completely full. MAYBE, and that's a JUST maybe, others will think twice before acting in such an irresponsible manner.

This may be a knee-jerk reactions, but I'm ready to pay a little more in taxes to have at least 2 armed security/law enforcement officers at every school. And I don't have kids. It should be noted that these "sicko psychos" only attack the unarmed. Never heard of one going to the State Police Barracks to wreak havoc. Nor do you hear of much gun-play at international airports now that security has been beefed up. Just my initial thought.

Understandable. Obviously most retailers have similar policies but AZ shined the spotlight on every location.  I'd say local law enforcement is just wondering when and where the first armed robbery will occur. Maybe they've upped the frequency of rounds near many locations. We can only hope this doesn't end up horribly bad.
