Has anyone ever experienced malfunction of an Auto-loader due to subfreezing temps? I suspect the 16* I trudged thru last night would not be a factor. But what about the -20s and below in the Northern regions? Does the recoil spring rate change in extreme Cold? Could that thin little coat of oil on the rails hinder full cycle? I usually carry a 9 or 40 on my walks mainly for the benefit of having more ammo conveniently packed in the extra clip/s. But if it gets much colder I may start carrying a revolver.

This may be ancient history but; at a gunshow some 25+ years ago I picked-up an unfired Tanfoglio duo-tone CZ-clone chambered for .41 AE. No ammo so waited a week to get 3 boxes of Samson. First experiences at home, seemed like there were going to be some feeding issues. Got it out to the range and she pretty much ran smooth as butter from then on. I could even load 215 gr. SWC meant for a 41 Mag in the cases. Still ran fine. BUT, about 10 years into my ownership I took the gun out for Fall testing of reliability. Ran the 2 clips thru fine. Put the gun back in its rug and pretty much stored it over Winter. Here's where it got real interesting, to me. Spring time comes. I go out with several guns. When it comes time for the .41 to do its thing, nothing! Hammer would drop but no boom. I believe I was at home when I determined it was a broken firing pin. $36 dollars and a 2 week wait from Miami Fla fixed it. I wasn't as enthused about that gun after that. Glad it wasn't a Carry gun. Also had a CZ 75 clone Tanfoglio convertible with short slide .40 S&W barrel and 9mm longslide. 9mm functioned perfectly. .40 had a tight chamber and was very finicky about ammunition. This was some 23-24 years ago so I have no idea what quality is like now. But I trust higher dollar names as my carry pieces.

As an option; I really like the I6 Paladin by O-Light. 500+/- Lumens and the fit and function are superb. Very lightweight and fits my hand perfectly. NOT for indoor use. TOO bright. Mounts nicely on a 12 ga Pump. $40 range. Have 2 Streamlights, an Icon Rogue and a Nebo. All OK for the money, but the OLight is a Blazer!

Night stand guns caliber and capacity
HvBikeWlTravel replied to Duck's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You are absolutely correct to consider the effect of an inside blast on your hearing. I would hopefully grab the small caliber option IF I felt the actual intrusion in my home. Most times when I grab a firearm off the nightstand it's to check a disturbance outside. Most often wildlife in my location. -
Night stand guns caliber and capacity
HvBikeWlTravel replied to Duck's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
My closest firearm when sleeping is a hammerless Automatic under the top sheet. Small caliber but next to last resort in the extremely unlikely circumstance that I don't hear someone breaking in. I tend to vary the nightstand weapon from week to week. .40, 9, .45, .41, .38. But most assuredly I ALWAYS bring a firearm(and my cellphone) in the bedroom when I'm headed to bed. There might even be a "hideout" small caliber surprise in the bathroom. -

The "Full Auto .500 S&W" Video is surprising. Never woulda guess you could do that! -
There is an old Ammunition Selling site. Don't have link but should be pretty easy to Google.

Firearms Record Book
HvBikeWlTravel replied to HvBikeWlTravel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Thanks for the suggestions. Hadn't considered PC software. Guess I'm "old school".........................................or just old! This is more for my heir to use as a reference. -
Anyone have a recommendations on a good Firearms Record Book? My old one has too small print for serial #s and accessories. And I'm down to the last 3 pages. Don't need anything fancy. Just functional.

Wyoming Representative Takes a Stand! (classic)
HvBikeWlTravel replied to waynesan's topic in General Chat
I've been echoing the Representatives' words for several years. People move to Tenn. after they've effectively F-ed up their own states and then start voting to F-up this one. WY has long been on my list of states that I would move to because of the minimal number of laws, and the fact that they are less invasive of individual rights. -
RUSH :puke: Just kidding! Maybe League of Their Own...........................................orrrrrrrrr Moneyball and I am NOT a baseball fan!

Actually, for the kiddies out there, mine is a reference back to an early 60s TV western. Have Gun, Will Travel* *Richard Boone as Paladin *Theme sung by Johnny Western

Welcome. I need to re-up my membership at CHMR. Still limited to 100 yds.?

IF your Manual is fairly recent I doubt you will create an "unsafe" condition if measurements are accurate. Referring back to some of my 30 yr old Manuals compared to most recent data there is often a 10% or so decrease in weight in the newer manuals. You could work unsafe loads under certain circumstance based on the old data.

As a matter of fact the first rifle powders I bought(30 yrs ago) were 4064 and 4198. Still have old cans with just enough for 2-6 cases. Have much more Accurate so I might as well start experimenting with those. Have loading data for 2 previous 7-08s so I'm not totally in the dark.
-
Part of my posing the question was to find out if there was a relatively new powder specifically for the .308/7-08 case pushing the lighter end of the bullet choices. I am totally unfamiliar with all of the newer powders mentioned. If you'd asked me 25 years ago if there was any need for more powders on the market, my answer woulda been "Hell no!" Obviously the Manufacturers disagreed. And they probably have good sales figures to back up their decision.
-
Used up the last of my 4064 years ago. After some investigation into availability, it looks like Powder is on the hard to get list. Still have several lbs. of previously listed, so I guess I'll use that up first. PS: I'm looking for consistent kill shots on Hummingbird size targets.

I'm about to work up loads for a new(to me) 7mm-08. I'll be pushing 115gr, 120gr, and 140gr out a 22" barrel. Accuracy is first priority. Powders I have on hand are WW 748, AA3100, AA 2520(?), AA 2015, and IMR 4198. Have loaded this Cartridge for 2 other Rifles many years back. Haven't looked at loading data YET! Will one of these suffice or do I need to spend $ to get the latest and greatest? Seems to me if memory serves, the WW748 and the AA 2520 are right in the range to try.

Actually, the weight would be an issue for me. Prefer to carry a few ounces, not lbs. On the other hand, none of mine serve as a good hammer substitute.
