  1. I'd like to apologize for that incident on behalf of all of the black folks (like myself) that haven't compeltely lost their mine. In other news.. A buddy of mine who lives in a black neighborhood in downtown Kansas City had a somewhat similar experience right after the election.. none of the businesses would serve Caucasians.. I wrote the story that he told me when he called me because he couldn't get a haircut at one of the 5 barbershops withing 5 blocks of his place.http://geekpolitics.com/african-americans-behaving-badly/
  2. CRKT (Columbia River) m16-14m
  3. Thanks for all the feedback. What would my options be for competitive shooting of older military rifles and where would I look to practice? I currently don't own a handgun - though I do have one on my list for my next gun purchase.
  4. So, what sort of options are there for new shooters to participate in competitive shooting? Are there any events specifically for new shooters? Also, how friendly are other shooters generally towards new shooters? Any information would be great. Thanks.
  5. bump - Can anyone else give me some info on these guns? I found some info online that indicated they could shoot .38 ACP or 9mm steyr and was wondering if anyone had experience with this.
  6. Hi, I'm thinking of buying one of the Star Super Modelo (A I think) from Sarco and I wondered if anyone had any experience with this pistol? It's chambered in 9mm Largo and I don't know how prevalent that ammo is in the U.S. or if there are easy conversions or other more common calibers that will fire in the pistol.
  7. The OH Range is still operating? Who is it operating through? I'd love to sign up.
  8. A friend and I had been shooting at OHGC so we are looking for a new place to shoot. We were thinking about joining the Maury County Gun Club. This would allow us to start some clay target shooting which we've never done and MCGC is one of the qualified organizations for the CMP program (at least I believe that's what the CMP website said). All that said, has anyone had any experience there? Would you suggest it for people living in south Nashville (Right on the dge of Brentwood) and My buddy living in Spring Hill. Thanks.
  9. Well I spoke with him and he said he will replace the bolt/firing pin. He says he has a shipment of them coming in and will pull the bolt off of one of them. Also, I mentioned this sadness at work and a guy a work with said he had a big bag of various parts from a couple old Enfields at his house. He is gonna check for a bolt and bring it in if he has one. so all is looking up.
  10. I certainly won't condemn him until I've spoken to him today - and I'll be sure to let everyone on here know about the outcome. He seemed like a really stand up guy when I bought from him. I certainly don't think he knew it didn't fire.
  11. Sadly the Enfield doesn't fire. Went out to the range today and it didn't fire. Looked at the bolt and the tip of the firing pin is smashed. I guess I should know to look at that before hand. So, whats the ordinary expectation when buying firearms from a dealer? "Buyer Beware, All Sales Are Final"? I got it from the Gun Show in Nashville on Saturday. The guys name is David Annable and the business card he gave me says "The Hunter's Den". Anyone know him or had any experience with him? I'm gonna try to give him a call tomorrow.
  12. I'm pretty sure the fellow I bought it from had refinished it himself.. It smells like fresh lacquer. He likely believes if they are darker it will hide some of the damage / wear on the stock and more people at the gun show will buy it. I would have preferred it not been altered at all - but thems the breaks -and I got a good deal.
  13. I would definitely believe it. I've shot one a few more times since then and I enjoy it quite a bit now. I'm on the fence about stripping this dark varnish off and re-staining it lighter. Probably to a similar shade as the Yugo. Any thoughts on this? It kinda irks me that the varnish is so dark I can't see the wood grain.
  14. Keep the linksys, they are actually a great piece of hardware. However, the firmware is bunk... which is why they started supporting the DD-WRT program. DD-WRT is GREAT replacement firmware. The router will run better than it ever did before and it has alot more options. My WRT54G was locking up daily but once I upgraded it to DD-WRT there have been no problems. tnelson also has some good suggestions - but I think DD-WRT should be your first solution.
  15. Right, I was told he owner of the land was going to be operating the range himself. I just kind of hoped he had been gung ho about it and was ready for customers. My buddy, who is a member, and I want pretty regularly and would like to continue to go if the owner gets himself together... It will be sad if the owner doesn't really get off his butt enough to pull it off and it just sits there un used.
  16. Any OHGC members know if / when that range will be open to the public and what the procedures will be for using the range?
  17. I recently bought the Volquartsen hammer kit from my 10/22 and this came with the Auto Bolt release. I got this all in and working fine the first few trips out. One day I forgot to put the bolt buffer back in and it would occasionally lock open after firing a shot. I thought this was just because I didn't have the buffer bolt pin in but after I put it back in it is occasionally locking open - Maybe 2/5 shots It will hang open. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Should I put the old bolt lock back in?
  18. I was not previously aware of this limitation. I tend to carry a knife with me at all times and sometimes this does go over 4 inches. Can anyone give some specific history or reasoning behind the law? Does it apply equally to folders as well as fixed blade knives? Are there separate rules for knife size in regards to hunting? Is that 4 inches for both concealed and not? This is a bit sad, half of my knives can't be carried legally :-(
  19. This is the exact issue my post is talking about. If you couldn't tell I like writing articles on political issues.
  20. You should read the Undercover Economist - this is a great book - Here is the problem as I see it: I reject in principle the idea that people deserve a certain amount of money. A union is just another way to enforce a minimum wage, though in this case it can be arbitrarily high wage and include other perks. When we set these types of regulations we remove the ability for businesses to reward productive employees commiserate with their performance / abilities. If we speak in terms of economics the issue comes down to everyone 'winning'. I will try to explain by using the idea of coupons and sales. It is obvious by the existence of sale items and coupons that some items can be sold much cheaper than they regularly are and the company will still make profit. The goal of the company, however, if to make the most money possible. Some consumers are not price sensitive - They just don't care how much a box of cheerios costs. While some consumers are extremely price conscious. Let's assume that each box of cheerios costs .50$ to make and the regular price is 1.00$. It is in the best interest of everyone involved to make some money - even if it is only 5 cents - from the price sensitive consumer instead of making 0$ because they will pass it up. This means the company has to provide the good very cheaply to the price sensitive consumer. However, the company cannot make the good that cheap regularly - because then they won't be maximizing their profits - some people will be willing to pay 1.00$. What you do then is you make the regular price high and provide sales and coupons for the price sensitive consumer. The extra work required on the part of the price sensitive consumer to get the lower price is worth it to them but will not be worth it to the consumer that doesn't mind the price. In this situation the company maximizes profits by ensuring they get some amount of profit from every potential customer. Unions / minimum wage is essentially the same thing. All people have some dollar amount at which they value themselves. This is some amount of money that they have decided they will not work above, the employer also has a maximum amount they are willing to pay their employees. In this situation the higher wage is analagous to the lower price on cheerios. The company requires some extra effort in the form of negotiation, performance, time at the company, etc. to obtain the higher wage. People who are willing to work for less will work for it and the people unwilling to work for it will either make more or re-evaluate how much they are worth as an employee as a result of the rarity / skill of comparable employees. At this point I could point out the common arguments that tout common anti-socialism talking points but these will all be very politically charged and ultimately ineffective. So then I will jsut say this: The fundamental belief that all people are equally valuable is a flawed, naive, and unrealistic belief. Society functions daily through the machinations of millions of people doing sometimes small thigns that are important - this I will agree with, it is important that the coffee farmer in south America is doing his job. The point though is that the theoretical physicist is more valuable - There are just less people with his skill set available - where as laborers can be had easily. Similarly, the worker on the line who makes 1000 parts a day is far more valuable than the person who makes 750 parts a day. My father is an industrial plumber who works on commission. The commission system admits immediately, and without remorse, that we are all not equal, we all deserve to be paid in scale with our output. Unfortunately, we have these unions because there were some circumstances in the past that allowed corporations to break the free market model and take advantage of their workers in extreme ways. In some ways it is the job of some sort of organizations, perhaps the government, to protect workers who honestly lack the ability to value themselves. But unions only help the people who aren't exceptional, and hold back the truly exceptional. *Excuse any spelling mistakes I pounded this out in about 10 minutes*
  21. I really enjoy the Savage Mark II. If I were to buy a bolt action as a companion to my 10/22 it would be a savage mark II, probably the mako... because it's sexy and I'm young enough to still think looks matter.
  22. Since we are talking about 10/22s. I have these rings on mine that look like very large thumb screws. I find that they get loose after a trip to the range and the gun is no longer zeroed. do I need to replace these rings? The rings I currently have look EXACTLY like these http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-airgun-rimfire-1-22-rings.html
