That's why I brought up what they are trying to do to force that new money on all Americans. They are wanting total control of everyone and the almighty dollar is what people depend on to live. If they have that control they can shut down your bank account with a push of a button......JMHO

...or control how many guns you can buy, who is buying too much gasoline, or who is hoarding up more money than is allowed.  Sounds like something from George Orwell, but there are politicians in office today who would do this tomorrow if they could get away with it.

Alright, so I am going to toss the newish Walther PDP onto the table for discussion.  For some reason these do not get a whole lot of attention, but they are in my opinion one of the best handguns on the market for defensive or duty purposes these days.

They have a stellar trigger, especially for a striker-fired gun.

They are not only optics-ready but are essentially "optics brand agnostic" thanks to a mounting plate system.  And a mounting plate system that is deeply recessed into the slide so that the factory iron sights co-witness with an optic without needing to be replaced with taller variants.

People without engineering degrees suddenly became engineering experts when the PDP was released and made much to do about the mounting plate's lack of recoil lugs, which ended up being a complete load of hooey.  Even still, Walther addressed that by making an unnecessary modification to the slide with the 2.0 mounting design.

And speaking of iron sights, Walther wisely chose to use Glock-pattern sights, so the pistol inherited an insane variety of iron sight options which are easy to remove and install.  Rather than being forced to use a pair of sights that you don't really care for, you have a ton of options, and those options were available right out of the gate.

The grip texture on these guns is amazing as well, so aftermarket stippling isn't necessary - although I've seen people do it and have wondered why the hell they'd ruin a perfectly good gun like that.  And, of course, the grip size is adjustable thanks to a trio of backstraps included with the gun AND folks with even smaller hands can choose the "F" variant of the PDP that has an even smaller grip circumference.

Accuracy of the gun is spot-on thanks to an excellent barrel, and the recoil impulse of the gun is smooth and quick, allowing for very fast and flat shooting.

It really blows my mind that more people don't own and carry these.

    exactly GIF

What did Walther improve over the PPQ?  I had a 4" PPQ and a Q5, but decided they weren't for me.  They were accurate and had decent triggers, but none of the backstraps would allow me ergonomically activate both the mag release and the slide release - I had to pick one or the other.  Many complained that the grip was too short.  The grip texture was meh, but there is no such thing as too aggressive in my book.  I wanted to like them, but ended up going back to a Glock.

No doubt, depending on what cartridge they use, the distance is decent, but even then it's dangerous.  That is why teams must train, while one officer has the perp's attention, remember tunnel vision works both ways, the other can employ the non-lethal.  Though at my age and physical traits (and some LEOs too), I would need three times that distance and still be in the danger zone.

    Looks kinda iffy…

Never been a cop, or played one on tv, and Holiday Inn has become too expensive, so take it for what it's worth.  All this is in hindsight, and there is no telling what changing one of the links would do to the chain of events. Having said that, there are only a couple things that I seen that may have been done differently, and the circumstances could have turned out differently.  Mind you, I say differently, not better or worse.

One is that the second LEO could have gone less lethal sooner, if he had employed a taser, it may have turned out the same, but maybe not.   The drawback of course is that the LEO staying lethal needs to cover him and he best be a good shot if the perp turns his attention to his partner or doesn't go down when tazed.

The other thing was that once the first shots went off, they could have rushed in and secured his hands immediately.  Here, the drawback could be that the perp may have another weapon, knife or gun, and the officers may or may not have seen what happened to the knife he originally had, which often happens due to tunnel vision, so may not have been an option.

The last thing I want to point out is that you never assume a perp is down for the count, always be prepared to send more rounds into him just in case.  And as a civilian, never approach someone you shot, let medics or LEO do that, he may be faking or still have enough energy to do you harm.

How close does one have to be to use a taser?  If the guy has a knife, I'm maintaining distance.

I stand corrected. I got the Shield-9 and G43 out of the safe and they're the same width and length, but the Shield's grip is slightly longer by the thickness of a butt plate. It does get an extra round for that, though. 😄

I do agree the Kahr's trigger isn't for everyone. I haven't tried the CM9. My PM9's trigger is smooth as butter but it's looooooong and there's almost no discernible catch before the break. I just keep pulling until it goes bang. 🙂 Then it has a long release for the reset which makes follow-up shots harder without practice.

To me, the size and weight is noticeably less with the Kahr vs the G43 or Shield-9. Most of the time I can honestly and truly forget I have it. That doesn't happen with any other gun besides a teeny-tiny .380 like an LCP or P3AT. Not even the G43 or Shield-9.

You've talked me into giving the G43 another chance. I was planning a range day soon and I'll make room for both.

Per their websites, the 43 with empty mag is two ounces heavier than the CM9 with empty mag.  That ain't much.  THE MSRP of all three are within $9.  MY CM9 trigger was exactly as you describe - light, smooth, and waaaay too long.  It's been a while, but I remember my Shield being chunkier in the grip.  The 43 is OK until you add the +1 extension.  Then it becomes a whole new gun that is much easier to shoot in a hurry.

I'm not a 43 fanboy (it's too small), but my current situation has temporarily led me to pocket carry and it's the best option I have found.  I'm glad I already had it.

David said be ready to defend your answer! 😄

How do you justify the larger G43 as being underappreciated for deep concealment/pocket carry when compared to the noticeably smaller Kahr PM9/CM9 (PM9 is pricier, but not the CM9) with the same 6+1 capacity (7+1 with the extensions)?

Or if you hate the loooooong Kahr trigger, the S&W M&P Shield-9. It's larger than the Kahrs, but still smaller than the Glock 43 and gets an extra round over the Glock and the Kahrs AND it's way cheaper than the G43 and can be had with or without a thumb safety. Buyer's choice.

I'd argue any of those are better at their intended function than the G43. I have a PM9, M&P Shield 9, and a G43. The G43 is my least favorite because it's bigger than its competition without providing something beneficial for that extra size.

I've owned all three (43, CM9, and Shield) and the Shield was bigger than the other two.  The CM9 and the 43 were close enough to not matter when the 43 was wearing its stock 6 round magazine.  I am using sise-by-side comparisons, not some manufacturer's misleading specs.  The CM9 was a good little gun except for its awful trigger.

  8. I could watch Vogel videos all day.  Here are a couple more where he discusses grip and grip strength.  One thing I've always believed and Vogel teaches is not to crush the gun with the firing hand.  Vogel does have freak hand strength, though.

  9. Glock 43

It's not Gucci like all the mini double stacks that are now fashionable and it's too small (for me) to be a general purpose carry gun, but it's quite useful in certain roles.  I'm recovering from rotator cuff surgery and didn't realize I would struggle so much to button my damn pants, so I have been carrying a pocket gun in a kydex Aholster instead of the usual IWB rig.  Many would argue that a j-frame is the best answer for a pocket gun, but I think the 43 is superior.

    - holds three more rounds (w/ Pearce +1)

    -flatter/easier to conceal

    -easier to shoot

    -less recoil

-9mm is arguably more effective than .38

If you discard their advice because it doesn't feel the same as what you've always been doing... guess what.  You're not going to get your money's worth and your results will probably be what they've always been.  🙂

...which may already be superior to what they are selling.

I really want to take a class from Scott. But I also think that you make a very important point. There’s a lot of ways to skin this cat. It doesn’t mean that some aren’t objectively wrong, but there are more ways than one that are subbjectively,l right.

Agreed - the best handgun shooter in the world, Eric Grauffel, puts his finger around the front of the trigger guard fudd style.  What is counterproductive for some may be perfect for others and vice versa.

  12. I disagree with the guy's premise that the weak hand trigger finger indexing on the strong hand middle finger is the way.  This method often sets up my weak hand grip lower than I like on a G17.  Splitting hairs here, but It does illustrate that a one-size-fits-all method sometimes isn't ideal when different size and shape guns and different size and shape hands are involved.  As usual, training/practice overcomes a lot and whatever works is what works.

The movie was pure schlock. The books are way, way better. Also, the author of the books is somebody you may very well have seen around town and possibly at the range.

I knew the author was from or lived in Memphis.  I'll have to check out the books.

  15. I rolled the dice on what I figured was another cheesy CIA movie - Gray Man.  It was silly, but fun enough - lots of bad guys who are lousy shots, a hot brunette who can fight, Pablo Escobar playing the fake ID guy, the Prague police used P-09s instead of the usual Glocks, and the hero takes multiple stab wounds and a gunshot, but walks out of the hospital in two weeks and goes back into one man army mode.  I LOLd when Ryan Gosling used the reflection in the windows to figure out when and where to shoot the bad guy through the train roof.
