TN State IDPA Match, Soddy Daisy, 4/1 & 4/2
Cruel Hand Luke replied to A.J. Holst's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Thanks AJ but it wasn’t quite THAT simple. Back Up Gun is one of the more difficult guns to run at speed especially when there are a lot of tight shots on moving targets and on targets surrounded by non threats. plus that whole 6 round capacity adds an extra reload on just about every stage. That short sight radius also magnifies every tiny little mistake and a small misalignment of the sights equals a big misalignment on the target past 10 yards. I am really fortunate to do as well as I did in the first major match I have shot since 2019.I have to think Mike Fielden and Ronnie Dodd are looking down and smiling. -
untilOn Saturday APRIL 9 we will hold our next training event for the Harris Combative TN/GA/AL Regional Training Group for 2022 . Everyone is welcome! Subject : Getting shot sucks...get off the X !!! Instructor: Randy Harris Randy's BIO Location: Windrock Shooting Range 720 Windrock Rd, Oliver Springs, TN 37840 Windrock Website Time: 1PM EASTERN time - 5PM EASTERN time Price: $80 - pay at class cash or check. What you need to bring: Pistol, at least 2 pistol magazines and at least 150 rounds of ammo. Revolvers are welcome if you want to party like it is 1899. We will work on our pistol skills specifically getting off the X in reactive situations, retaking the initiative and counter attacking. Standing still in the open while people shoot at you is normally not a good strategy for long term health. If your skills you learned in Close Range Gunfighting have gotten a little rusty this is the tune up you need! We will also run some "man on man" drills to test skills and add a little motivation. Most ranges don't allow you to just show up and shoot while moving so don't miss out on this opportunity ! Training will take place after lunch after the morning Back Up Gun match at the Windrock Range so if you want to come out to shoot the backup gun match you'll need at least 25 (yes 25) rounds of ammo for that. Looking forward to seeing you there!

The mind hates novelty so it is better to have experienced it in training than to experience it the first time when it is "for real". But yes ...it is going to be a little chilly but we can use the classroom to take breaks and warm up . -

Cruel Hand Luke replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I just now saw this and I know it is super short notice but you might be interested in this upcoming event in Cleveland TN this weekend.... On Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26, 2022, Westwood Baptist Church is hosting a Church Security Seminar – “A Gathering of The Guardians.” Westwood is located 4001 Georgetown Rd, NW, in Cleveland, TN. We will begin at 9:00AM, and conclude about 4:00PM. The Seminar is the same each day, and we are repeating it to accommodate the schedule of those who are still working or may have other conflicts. We have called it “MAGEN2022”, “magen” being a Hebrew word for guardian, protector, or shield. This is a follow on to our seminar MAGEN2020, which had over 725 attendees from 135 Churches. We have an outstanding speaker for this event. He is Dr. Tim Rupp. Dr. Rupp is a 25 year veteran of Law Enforcement, and, after completing his Doctorate of Ministry from Western Seminary, he Pastored Churches in Idaho. Currently, he is full time serving a Ministry dedicated to Law Enforcement personnel, a Ministry that he created. He is also the author of several books, including “Winning A Gunfight” and “Pistol in the Pulpit”. “Pistol in the Pulpit” is the focus of the material for this seminar. Additional information is shown in the attached Flyer. Registration will open December 6, 2021. Advance registration and payment are required. Cost for the seminar is $15 per person, which also includes lunch. To register, go to www.westwoodlife.org and follow prompts to “REGISTER”. This is a review originally posted on Glocktalk by one of the students in the Feb 4-5 Saving Your Life with a Pistol---What matters, what doesn't. Hi to all my GT buds: This is a comprehensive review of a recent training class I attended---so, if you don't have 5 minutes to spare please feel free to surf another post instead. This past weekend, I was fortunate to be able to attend a 2 day class in Tennessee, entitled; Saving Your Life with a Pistol---What matters, what doesn't. Instructed by Randy Harris, of Harris Combative Strategies and John Hearne, of Two Pillars Training. The class consisted of 9 participants, of which I was the eldest actual class member ( the range owner beat me by 5 years, but he was attending in conjunction with his ownership of the range) The class included ex-military, active and retired LE and also included several current and former firearms instructors. The skill-level was intermediate-to-advanced. Before I dive in, I want to preface the review with a little background: As many of you are probably aware, I am retired LE, with years as a member of my agency's firearm training section. In addition, after retirement to NM, I operated a very successful CHL training school from 2005 to 2015, This was during the surge in shall-issue permits in NM where a minimum of 15 hrs of combined classroom and range training is required and where the license is caliber and platform type specific---revolver shooters can't carry self-loaders and vice versa unless qualified with both. Since leaving NM and settling in GA, I try to maintain my age-diminishing skill-set by attending training classes--[ like the one being reviewed ] as often as they are offered within a few hours drive of my location. Mr Harris and Mr Hearne, are both highly skilled shooters and experienced instructors, each having trained with and by the great instructors of the present and past generation, to include the “Colonel” among many others. Their instructing “style” is not to denigrate or belittle performance, as some top-tier instructors often do, but to actually help the student self-diagnose problems, offering practical solutions for correction. In addition to their extensive skill-sets, each is a professional. I must define what this term means to me; Professionalism in my experience, is demonstrated by showing up and working when you are suffering from an Upper Respiratory Infection, like Mr Harris was---it is dressing out for extended range sessions in 19 to 30 degree weather, like it was the entire weekend, and finally, professionalism is demonstrated by not skimping on the training because of these limiting factors. Now, as to the course content: I have been blessed throughout my 50 yr shooting career; having been taught and mentored by extremely patient and knowledgeable instructors; ranging from my early agency peers to the great instructors during my IALEFI years, and finally with advanced classes taught by messirs Harris and Hearne. Eight hours of this class was devoted to the classroom for the sole purpose of understanding; Who Wins, Who Loses, and Why Instructors such as myself, have long repeated the sage advice of the “Colonel”, the witticisms of Clint Smith, Tom Givens, Massad Ayoob, and other highly skilled instructors, while never knowing the origins and actual science behind the core tenets of the handgun instruction we received.. This class, taught by a Masters educated historian and trainer explained how we are wired as humans, why we react the way we do in extremis, as well as presenting practical methods for learning essential gun-fight survival skills. The content was personally satisfying to me, as it affirmed the beliefs and dictums I have passed on to my CHL students, while divulging the “Science” behind those beliefs to back them up. This portion of the class was very extensive---debunking statements and beliefs widely held by myself and other trainers...such as; the belief that the victims of the Newhall massacre had empty 38 casings in their trouser pockets...just one of many examples where actual research and science has revealed the “True” story of events many believed otherwise. The range portion of the class was predictable; There is only so much you can do on a traditional square range....and, the field of handgun training has expanded about as much as the science allows---The core disciplines have been developed and are widely taught---this is a finite discipline---there really are not any new dynamic discoveries being made....[We] know what works---we know what core skills a handgun shooter must develop in order to manipulate the platform correctly and efficiently...we know the value of dry-fire practice, confirmed by purposeful live-fire. We know that being able to draw to a center-mass hit from concealment in less than 2 seconds, is vital to prevailing in an armed encounter...We know the value of force-on-force training. These facts are universally known, or “should” be known by any serious student of the discipline, and certainly by Any person.who carries a handgun daily for personal protection. So, there were few surprises for us on the range. That being said, I believe Any professionally directed handgun practice is valid for anchoring a skill-set or reinforcing existing skills. And something we ALL learned, is just how uncomfortable and difficult it is to smoothly manipulate your handgun in 19 degree temperatures---how 3 layers of clothing can snag and or slow your draw.---how frozen fingers can easily fumble a reload...how difficult it can be to manipulate your platform while also holding a flashlight...but, Bad Actors operate in all kinds of weather, and to survive,we must be able also. Several hours of the program were conducted in near-total darkness...while we practiced the various methods for operating our handguns with both weapon mounted and mostly hand-held flashlights. Spoiler alert...firing with a flashlight in your hand is one thing...performing a tactical magazine exchange, with frozen fingers AND a flashlight in your hand is a different matter entirely. Fortunately, the stats are on our side, in that very rarely will an armed citizen need to reload their platform...the reality being that you will live or die with what is in the handgun at the time hostilities commence, whether it be 5 rounds in your trusty J-frame or 17 rounds in your wonder-nine. In conclusion; I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and there was very little down-time---we were either actively engaged in vigorous classroom discussions/debates or on the firing line...and in the final analysis...that's exactly what we paid our monies to do... I hope to meet some of my GT buds at another class, contact the instructors at their web sites; Harriscombative.com or Jhearne.com and remember “Firearm safety is Everyone's responsibility” LT. Donn

Still have spots available in this class. Don't miss this opportunity to get the scientific data on what really works under stress, what you should be spending your training time on and what historical sacred cows should really be slaughtered. John has been working on gathering data for his presentation pretty much since he and I met 15 years ago. This information has been thoroughly peer reviewed and vetted and this class is one of the few places you can get this lecture without having to attend the Rangemaster Tactical Conference (Tac Con) . Combine that with the shooting and low light portions of this class and you have a unique event that you'll be talking about for a long time.

On the evening of Feb 4th (5-9PM) and all day Feb 5 (8:30AM-11PM) at THE RIDGE in Dayton TN Randy Harris and John Hearne will be offering Saving Your Life with a Pistol - What Matters , What Doesn't . https://www.eventbrite.com/e/harris-hearne-saving-your-life-with-a-pistol-what-matters-what-doesnt-tickets-227733044667 This is a class combining John Hearne’s epic research and lecture on "Who Wins, Who Loses, & Why: Understanding Human Performance When Death Is On The Line." with elements of Randy Harris’s “Primary Skills for the Armed Citizen” and “Defensive Concepts for Low Light Environments”. The class structure will be half of John’s lecture on Friday night from 5 - 9PM. Saturday will begin at 8:30AM with range work until we break for lunch and then we will continue with the rest of John’s lecture until the evening dinner break. After that we will return to the range for the low light portion of the class until 11PM. John's lecture is a broad survey of the most current research into human performance during interpersonal conflict. It is specifically tailored to the needs of those concerned with self-defense whether armed or unarmed. A strong emphasis is placed on understanding how the human mind works in order to optimize performance and increase one’s chance of dominating a violent encounter. Significant time is spent correcting previously offered, outdated information on human performance. Methods of optimizing training are addressed as well. (A binder with course relevant materials will be provided to students.) The shooting portions of the class will be focusing on the core skills of fighting with a handgun under realistic defensive shooting conditions and stress in both daylight and then in low light. These combat proven skills include solid robust manipulations that work under extreme pressure. This training will help with building realistic mental mapping and help you to learn to overcome the potential for panic and stay focused on the task at hand. Fights are won by applying high quality hits under pressure and that is the focus of this class. Location: THE RIDGE 11534 US-27, Dayton, TN 37321 CLASS TIMES : Friday FEB 4 (5PM-9PM ) Saturday FEB 5 (8:30 AM - 11PM) Equipment Needed : Note Taking materials , Reliable pistol with AT LEAST 3 magazines , 200 rounds of ammo, a handheld flashlight and spare batteries, a holster that fits on the belt, (no pocket, ankle or shoulder holsters) , eye and ear protection. If you have a weapon mounted light feel free to bring it too but it must properly fit in your holster when mounted on the gun. Also if you have a blue gun or airsoft gun that replicates your carry gun and fits your holster feel free to bring it . John Hearne has been a law enforcement officer since 1992 and teaches a variety of subjects for his agency, such as firearms, tactics, use of force, etc. John has been a firearms instructor with Tom Givens' Rangemaster since 2001. He has traveled the country teaching operator and instructor level courses to private citizens, law enforcement agencies, and military groups. John has been researching and speaking on firearms related topics since 2005 and has spoken at many local and national training conferences. John was the featured author to address current research into human performance for Massad Ayoob's "Armed Self-Defense: What the Experts Want You To Know." John has competed in a variety of venues, from the National Tactical Invitational to the Rangemaster Tactical Conference. John has numerous first place and top ten finishes in these events and was the first person to earn a Turbo Pin from Gabe White's Pistol Shooting Solutions without using an AIWB holster. Randy Harris is a highly-accomplished civilian firearms trainer with over 20 years experience in the field . I hope you don’t think that by pointing out his arrest record I was justifying his death. If he was the one stealing the stuff in the neighborhood ( and no one as far as I know has conclusively proved he was not) then he should have been arrested by the police and tried in court for it ..... not shot during an ill conceived attempt at a citizens arrest. I’m not using the truth of his recent past and current suspicious behavior to justify anything . I’m merely pointing out that this was not just some random jogger minding his own business who got shot as was being portrayed in most of the mainstream media.
-
OK , lets not fall into the "upstanding citizen of color gunned down while minding his own business" false narrative. Arbery was caught with a gun in a high school basketball game and arrested in 2013, was arrested for trying to steal a TV from Walmart in 2017, had mental issues (diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder after a 2018 incident ) where his mom had to call the police on him where she warned the dispatcher that responding officers should be careful because he would become violent if the police were confrontational...... so lets just stop the "he was a pillar of the community" stuff. According to WTOC 11 in Savannah ....." Arbery pleaded guilty to charges he carried a gun onto a high school campus in 2013, a year after he graduated. Rodney Ellis, police chief for the Glynn County school system, testified at Wednesday’s hearing that Arbery tried to evade officers on foot and stopped only when two of them pointed guns at him. He was also arrested in 2017 on charges that he tried to steal a TV from a Walmart store. Court records show he pleaded guilty to shoplifting. Arbery was on probation at the time of his death." Being on probation from the shoplifting conviction might be a good reason to not submit to citizens arrest....He was also locally known to convenience store owners as "The Jogger " who would jog up in front of convenience stores and stop and stretch and then run inside , steal merchandise and run off. Now as to the three dumbasses that killed him.....Unlike Tennessee where you can't legally use lethal force to make a citizens arrest . under the confusing and poorly written GA law at the time of the killing it was LEGAL to use lethal force to perform a citizens arrest. That does not mean it was wise. These guys should have IMMEDIATELY called 911 and let the people who get paid to do that kind of thing arrest him. He was not committing a violent felony that needed to be stopped immediately so just get on the phone and don't go chasing him. Unfortunately emotions got the better of logic and chase was on. Now if we want to argue that the defendants were tired of stuff getting stolen in the neighborhood and that they had seen him there more than once (and he had actually been caught on at least 5 different dates on surveillance camera inside a house under construction in the Satilla Shores) then OK fine, but just like the angry dog chasing the car....what exactly did you plan to do with the car once you catch it? These guys were not just out cruising around looking for black joggers to shoot. They were chasing him specifically because they (right or wrongly ) thought he specifically was the one responsible for all the petty theft going on in that neighborhood. And MAYBE he was .... we do not KNOW for sure that he wasn't. But like I tell everyone that will listen....you REALLY need to have a very short and very well thought out and reasoned list of things you are willing to kill people over because once you interject the gun someone may well die. Even if you are within the law (and the way the confusing citizens arrest statute at the time was written they arguably were ) when the chase begins , are you prepared for what may happen if you corner him and he does not submit peacefully? What if he is not afraid of your gun? What if he tries to take it? The easiest way to avoid that bad situation is to simply avoid that situation altogether. Call the police and let them do what they get paid to do. Should they have been convicted? I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with what they got convicted of (malice murder) . Manslaughter? Yep. Criminally negligent homicide? Probably. I do not think they intended to kill him when this was set in motion . I think it was reckless and they should well have known that someone might get killed from their actions (pretty much what criminally negligent homicide is) but I don't believe they set out intending to kill the guy. They got convicted largely because they killed a guy who was not a danger to the community (at the time) but who may well have been stealing stuff in the neighborhood. You can't legally shoot people for stealing property ...especially OTHER people's property. And if your dumbassery (chasing him) set the stage for him trying to take your gun (that's when he was shot) then yeah you are kind of responsible and you are probably going to get convicted.
