If you already know so much, why are you asking for suggestions? $300 probably won't get you a reliable rifle with the characteristics you've named. You might consider saving some more money and getting a Springfield M1a or a Steyr Scout rifle. Buy all the ammo you think you need to single handedly whip whatever army or mob you are planning for. I'm not sure where you plan to "scrounge for ammo" but most people I know who own it wouldn't be very receptive to your idea.   I'm always entertained by the new guys who know more than the rest of us. How old are you? Late teens I'm guessing.

I've had good luck with Palmetto State Armory and Graf and Sons. Midway is reliable, but their shipping is usually pretty high.

Wow! I've never heard of anyone else having such problems. The only one I've ever had I still have. It is a Norinco, and has been boringly reliable for nearly 30 years now. It is also very accurate with the old surplus ammo.   If I had to grab a rifle to defend hearth and home, I would be as comfortable with my SKS and bandolier filled with stripper clips as any rifle I own. It is built way better, in my opinion, than my AK.

Sounds like you are describing an SKS to me.

I shot a coyote this morning, and almost got reloaded in time to get a second, but not quite. Didn't see any "shooter" deer, just does and small bucks.

Maybe it was just dumb luck, but I really. REALLY improved the trigger on my mini 14. It is still perfectly safe and reliable. I think the SKS is next. I haven't really looked at how the AR trigger works yet, but it'll be hard not to figure out with this upcoming TGO AR build.

Although I'm just crazy about the old lever Savages and Savage calibers for nostalgia's sake, the 280 Remington is the one I take when I think the shot may be tough or extremely long. The 280 isn't as widely available as the 270 or 30-06, and costs a bit more. I reload, however, so cost really isn't a concern. There is a great selection of 7mm bullets for this caliber, so the loads you can try are nearly endless.

How much short is the brass?

I purposely bought an older one without a safety. I just can't make myself keep a lever rifle with both an exposed hammer and a safety.

What's weird is I'm looking for IMR 4320. I didn't think it would be a real hot item for hoarders.   30-30 bullets are also not available. I'm willing to bet that none of the major manufacturers have made a run of flat nosed .308 bullets in the past year, opting for more popular bullets.

My wife shoots a Beretta AL391 Urika in 20 gauge. It is very light, and recoil is almost non existent. She is very happy with it. I like to borrow it on occasion as well.

How do you fire this without powder burning your hand? Gloves?

It's been almost a year since the great scare and run on all things firearms. I'm finding that primers are easier to find, but projectiles are hit and miss, and powder seems scarcer than it has been for a few months. 22 ammo is still non existent. Guns are more plentiful, but AR parts are hit or miss for availability. I thought it would have settled down more by now.   When will we return to normal stocked shelves?

Yeah, don't expect him to entertain you while your there, but he will replace your ejector; most likely while you wait.

I think they'd work in my double, but I don't see an advantage to them.   I guess more would fit in your pocket?
