  9. When we lived outside Portland, OR, we raised broiler chickens and rabbits for meat. We also bought in a share of beef or hog regularly. We had a large vegetable garden, as well as fruit trees and berry bushes. Not wanting to risk spoiling the hard-won frozen foodstuffs, we installed a whole-house, 20 kW Generac propane generator. It was expensive, but (literally) saved our bacon a few times during extended outages of up to a week. It also made the outages about as comfortable as under normal power. It was a luxury for certain, but also helped boost our home's sale price. I'd do it again. I've found this site to be helpful in making buying decisions about generators: https://www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/. These folks also have buying guides for various other equipment.
  10. @Worriedman, thank you for your ongoing legislative updates! As a recent transplant and newbie to TGO, it's helping me get up to speed on current TN firearms legislation. Quoting the Lebanon Democrat: House Bill 1005 lowers the age of permits to 18 and changes the term handgun to firearm in Tennessee code. Good, yes? Senate Bill 1503 had an amendment added this week from Sen. Brent Taylor, R-Memphis, in the Senate Judiciary Committee that will prevent long guns from being openly carried. Would SB 1503, as amended, require that long guns be carried concealed?
  11. Scheels has Fiocchi Dynamics 9mm 115 gr FMJ on sale for $11.99 / 50 round box, with free shipping at 5 boxes. 12. Wife and I moved to Johnson City in October 2022. We're still searching for a rural home to purchase in a tight housing market. Patience ... Just getting acquainted with the forum so far.
  13. HB1385 defines "intent to go armed" as "carrying or wearing a weapon with premeditation and forethought to commit an infamous crime." If the bill were to become law, would this then negate the need for a carry permit of any type in TN? Presumably, law abiding citizens would not be "committing an offense" by carrying a firearm, as there would be intent to commit a crime. Would this mean that TN would have "true" constitutional carry? Thanks all for any clarification you can provide. Sorry if I'm behind the curve on this (new resident).
  14. Thanks, derf! God's country, indeed. Stay safe!
  15. Thanks! That was also my experience with fava beans as a cover crop. Good source of nitrogen, and weed suppression through the non-garden months too.
  16. Are you able to harvest the peas, or will you just work the plant matter back into the soil? Boys will be boys?
  17. Hello! I moved to east TN in 2022 after living 25 years in Portland, OR. I climbed rocks, ice, and mountains for many years, and have settled down to hobby farming since. I’ve revived my interest in hunting (from childhood in Maine), and enjoy chasing upland birds and ducks. I have a modest firearms collection, mostly workingman guns. I’m looking forward to getting better acquainted with the site and TGO members. Thanks for having me!
