  1. Thank you as well, Sgt Joe and thank you for your service to our nation. I wish I was still with DCS but I'm one of the folks who are currently still looking for employment. That was four years ago and DCS was the best posting I had in my ten and a half years with the state. I was an accountant but even we were kept up to date on the cases we paid invoices for. Before retiring, my uncle did his last duty station at NAS Jacksonville and he loved it so much he stayed there. Of course, it didn't hurt that he met his wife there during his last year in. His wife was from Gainsboro (sp?) and she homeschooled both her children with excellent success. At the time I thought nothing of her homeschool experience in Florida but after reading your post I'm actually giving it more thought. You know, my mom once told me, after my son was born, that parenting is only hard if you don't try. Maybe that love thing helps too. ;-)
  2. Sgt. Joe - Davidson County has the same zero tolerance for bullies and by that they concentrate on the one being bullied asking questions like "how does it feel to have him hit you" or even "what did you do to deserve this". After my son being threatened and my wife being threatened with rape (all by a third grader!) we did the same as you. The only thing we got from the principal was "Well, ******* has some at home issues so we just have to be patient with him." "I work for DCS," I said, "I've got more than patience." Some school systems have a hard time believing that some kids do indeed copy what they see at home or are just plain wanting to be bad. Some parents don't get that whole lead by example and deeds thing. Being a dad or mom is hard indeed and homeschooling and homeschool co-op classes are more than demanding at times but definitely rewarding.
  3. That's the theory I guess. No one's ever been attacked with or been killed by someone using a rock or stick.

  5. All that morning coffee I sneaked as a kid sure was a growth stunter!
  6. No, that's actually quite cool that you brought that up. It really is not for all kids and should be called on a per child basis. Good call. Good luck with your little brother. My son's the same way; sweet kid and not one to fight for himself but he'll do it for others. You're right about being sore years later, it's only natural to be but once you grow up you know that getting back at 'em mess isn't good either way. Hang in there, big guy, you sound like a pretty good big brother.
  7. There's nothing wrong with being shy and the teacher's unions do indeed rule with an iron fist. I've seen the social side of schools and I prefer to take my kids to the park for interaction and they have had no problems there.
  8. Metro Nashville Davidson County is just two short steps away from Memphis and Shelby County. Chris's (my son) third grade teacher told my wife once that she would love to do more teaching in the class but she spends more time than not being a disciplinarian. It was her that actually introduced us to the homeschooling option.
  9. Sorry about the double post.
  10. So good I don't even know how to properly agree!
  11. You got that right. You don't want to be overly protective but you've got to be watchful, mindful and loving in what they are exposed to. I'm of the mind that they are kids so treat them as such in as many areas as you can but don't cut them off from the world. As an aside, there are homeschool co-op's all over Davidson County for homeschoolers to have the classroom style education.
  12. My heart goes out to you. I was flabergasted when the first question out of his mouth was "Dad, what's a BJ?" My mouth dropped open. The following questions were so bad, I had to look them up because I was clueless and I went to public school. Then there was an unprovoked scissor attack against a little girl and the kid wasn't so much as suspended.
  13. Right again, Caveman. My wife was homeschooled as well from the seventh on and in the business and personal world she has excelled in both area's. Having actually caught up with other classmates, she's actually done better than my class valedictorian and salutatorian.
  14. Thank you, Caveman. We homeschool because the lack of discipline at home for a lot of kids spills over into the school sector. My son last went public in third grade in 2007 and, in the second grade, came and asked me things I thought I wouldn't talk with him about until the tenth grade. It was scary that he had kids using sexual terms that I never would use in in any instance as an adult and more so that he asked me what these specific terms were. The school systems in general do not teach any longer; they program. I do whole-heartedly agree that school administrators should make that call and let you, the parent, deal with the problem. I'm not quick to be heavy handed but like you I'm not afraid to do what needs to be done. I agree with the "I'm your parent first and your friend second" theory and application.
  15. Rant much? This kid now and kids then: it was just kids releasing their frustrations and being kids and it wasn't because we wanted that teacher dead. Yeah, we got called on it and sent to the principal's office or had to stand up and write on that black board "I will not sing such songs in class". Twenty years ago it was knives that was the big threat on middle school campuses and now it's 9mm. You paddle kids at school? Wow, I find that hard to believe; you must teach in a private school because public schools that I've sent my child to have no corporal punishment at all and that includes the surrounding counties. I worked for DCS for five years and I know they swoop down on faculty and schools for doing that. It's sad that the resources were used to investigate truly deserved discipline but that is what happens. As far as getting one at home; I got a belt for any infraction until my father's arm became tired. I was terrified of my father so please don't play that crap with me. I am not interested in how you do things. Myself and Krull were in fact laughing at the differences in decades and marveling at how back then we sang these songs and got in trouble but we could go to school dressed up on Halloween as The Terminator and nothing happened. I'm not sure why you push this thought that everyone here is "Conservative Christian"on me because I'm really not interested in hearing what a wonder-political-hack you are for any party. I'm willing to bet you aren't the only liberal on this site but you are probably the only one with a hateful chip on their shoulder.
  16. I'm not saying we never got our licks from our teachers; matter of fact I still hold a fond spot for my seventh grade Social Studies teacher Mrs. Reynolds who did just that. I don't remember school shootings back in the early and mid eighties. Not saying they didn't happen but I don't recall any. Of course, we never had to have cops in schools either and we did get our corporal punishment when it was deserved.
  17. That's the one!!!
  18. We sang about dead teachers to the tune of "On Top of Old Smokey" too and we never had to put up with that crap. My son read it and said, "Holy Crap. A policeman and fireman lego. I guess they don't want us to grow up to be in rescue units." I agree, twenty years has changed more than I care for. No wonder we home school.
  19. Has anyone seen this new example of stupidity? I couldn't believe it at first but come on! Wouldn't want any Duplo toys to be intimidated I guess. LEGO My Gun: S.I. Boy Faced Suspension Over Tiny Toy - News- msnbc.com
  20. c.a.s- Yep, the return spring is different from what I understand but it's removable and I'm waiting for the range to see if it stays or goes. I've tried it with and without and right now I'm leaning toward removal but once again...waiting for the range to see. BigPoppa-That's definitely on the list! I do love the look of the grip myself and it's got a good texture and feel so slippage isn't a problem. manofsteel- When the zombie apocolypse strikes I am so going to kick much a$$!
  21. Well, I got an early birthday present and my wife cut me loose to buy a shotgun. It's a TriStar Cobra Tactical and from what I can find it's got some pretty decent reviews. I'm new to the shotgun world so I think this is sweet! Can't wait to take her to the range!
  22. Enforcing will be impossible and it strikes me as government, on any level, trying to tell people what they can and cannot do with their private property.
  23. I saw this on FoxNews site. I was just glad to hear that the cops got the mom off the streets and the family friend had the good sense to do right by the the little girl.
  24. Taking a break from reading a book to read articles on the net.
