Who shortens AR barrels in East-TN?
Alleycat72 replied to Jon_L's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
You may want to look at this. I haven’t watched any in a long time but it should give you an idea of how to do it yourself. At the very least you will get an idea of what is involved. If someone tries to blow smoke up your ass about how hard it is to put one of these together you'll know they're full of it. If you decide to go this route let me know I’ll send you a receiver block and barrel nut wrench. Just send it back when you’re done. I will warn you, when you find out how easy it is you’ll end up with your own tools and three or four more uppers. Who shortens AR barrels in East-TN?

For added stability. With shorter barrels you get less velocity and bullet stability suffers. It would not be as bad in an 11.5â€, but the shorter you go the worse it gets. You get greater range and the ability to shoot the heavier bullets. Bullets can and do destabilize at shorter distances. There in no real down side. Bullet stability calculator. I understand that most SBRs are used as short range weapons, but mine are not. -

It takes about 5 minutes to put a barrel on the upper you already have. A $230 barrel is much cheaper than an upper. -

Short barrel shotgun question
Alleycat72 replied to a topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
Yep. It will cost you a $200 tax stamp unless you get one of these http://www.topnotchtactical.com/content-product_info/product_id-2191/serbu_super_shorty_mossberg.html Then it will cost you a $5 tax stamp. -
It's not the single shot that gets you, its the couple of hundred it takes to get familiar with a new gun and caliber.

Uselton has some nice $900 1911s for $10,000. Then he would tell you that you could not look at them.

Looking for Subsonic .308 ammo around Nashville
Alleycat72 replied to Leadslinger's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I work in Nashville. If you need help with a load let me know. Subs need to be setup for your gun. What twist are you running? How long is your barrel? Do you have R5 rifling? Temperature also comes in to play. You need to shoot for 1040fps. Factory stuff is in the 950 range. Using a 180 grain bullet is a safe bullet to start with. -

I use 11.6 gr of Trail Boss and a 225 gr Outlaw State bullet. It runs about 1055 fps out of a 20" Savage. -

Send it in yourself. It’s one less thing that can go wrong. Sometimes dealers get forgetful after they get their money. Congratulations on your purchase. I believe everyone should have five or six. When are you going to do a SBR for it? -

Why did you take the paperwork back to your dealer? -

A class III weapon is just like any other weapon you own, it just has extra paperwork. Treat it as such. My suppressors and SBR ride in the truck all the time especially during deer season. The boogie man is not going to get you.

New youth hunter caliber/cartridge recommendation
Alleycat72 replied to a topic in Hunting and Fishing
My little girl started with a suppressed 300 Whisper and subsonic 240s. Once she got use to that we switched to supersonic for hunting. It’s on an AR platform which may not be the ideal platform for a young child, but she likes the gun and keeps her interested. She got her first deer with it this year. The suppressor keeps the flinch factor down. My hunting partner started his kids on a 308 with reduced loads. I think he was running 150s at about 2300 fps. -
Yes. Yes. Yes except machine guns. You can't hunt with them.

Why do your do your own reloading?

Suppressors at TN/Federal Shooting Ranges?
Alleycat72 replied to a topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
On page 12 of the 2008-2009 Hunting and trapping guide there is inaccurate information. In the section Illegal Equipment #10, it states that it is illegal to possess a short barreled shotgun or rifle therefore it is unlawful to hunt with one. It has never been illegal to possess a short barreled rifle or shotgun. All you have to do is fill out a form 4 or form 1 as per ATF instructions. This includes a background check, finger print cards, and a sign off by the local Sheriff. This is sent to the ATF with a $200 check. The ATF dose a thorough background check and if you are clean you are given a $200 tax stamp on your form 4. You must keep this form with the gun at all times. The process takes up to four months. If it is your opinion that these firearms are dangerous due to their shorter barrel I refer you to page 16 Legal Equipment #6. It states that center fire handguns firing a single projectile and having a barrel length of four inches or more....... Some of the hand guns have 14 to 16 inch barrels on them, the addition of a stock would only make them safer to handle. I am not implying that some one should be able to hunt with a illegal firearm I am merely suggesting that the rules allow for someone who legally owns one of these firearms be aloud to hunt with them. Thank you for your time Alleycat72 Mr. Alleycat72 You're e-mail has been forwarded to me for a response. Paragraph 10, page 12 of the 2008 Hunting & Trapping Guide incorrectly states why short barrel rifles and shotguns are illegal to use for hunting. The reason is because the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission has not proclaimed them for use in hunting. Thank you for bringing our attention to this matter. Sheryl D.
