Whatever bullet you shoot it basically turns it into a 357 magnum. Our 9mm is our SHTF/defense gun for the house. It is the only gun that remains ready to go 24 hours a day. It is blowback so it will run no matter what you feed it. Not need to worry about the gas system getting dirty. You can shoot big and slow or light and fast equally well and not have any issues. They make frangible 9mm rounds that would make overpenetration a non issue. And the wound cavity would be expansive as would the hydrostatic shock. We have ours loaded with FMJ's now but did have FTX rounds in it at one point. Once I get my 300 dialed in I will be loading it with 240 soft cast bullets. They will tumble and squish out of shape creating a substantial wound cavity. And when I get a can built for it the rifle will be like shooting a pellet rifle. Dolomite

I tried several holsters and none felt well or concealed my 1911. I finally just made my own. Dolomite -
The only time I have ever used my FA is when I was doing a chamber check then quietly closing the bolt. Other than that, never and I have been overseas several times. As was already said, those that spout this BS probably are just parroting their mall ninja friend. I would only listen to those who have actually owned a certain gun not those who refuse to own a certain gun. Dolomite

I would buy the Sport then add the Magpul goodies later. The Magpul stuff on the gun only makes up about $150. That gun is the Sport just with Magpul gooddies added. I bet D+T can get you the Sport as well as supply you with the Magpul goodies for less than the Magpul version of the S&W. That way you can install the stuff yourself and learn a little about how the AR is built. Dolomite

good article on .223 vs 5.56
Dolomite_supafly replied to chances R's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Popped primers can lock up the FCG, I have seen it. But guns who do see pressure like this do not fail catastrophically. Parts do break, like the locking lugs or cracks in the cam pin, but I have never heard of a catastrophic failure from a steady diet of 5.56 in a 223 chambered gun. I have seen guns run for hundreds of rounds after loosing a lug without an issue. When an AR fails catastrophically it is because of bad reloads or squib loads. Not because 5.56 is fired in a 223 chamber. Something else. On the other end of the spectrum. In the throats of "223" guns the majority have longer throats. It is probably because of the liability issues. Dolomite -

So it is ok to have Washington and Reagan, who were also presidents, but not Obama who is also a president. People on an Obama board they would disagree. How it is interpreted is up to those viewing it. Eveyone is just getting upset because it is a symbol for Obama, not because it is a artistic expression of the flag. Dolomite -

That is pretty much it but make sure you have the approved form in hand before you have the parts needed to assemble the SBR. That is do not have the shorty upper sitting in the safe without a pistol lower or an approved form. Even if you do not have it attached to a rifle lower you can still get into some hot water by having it with only rifle lowers. As far as engraving there are several that do it. But I woudl recommend having it engreaved before your paperwork comes back. The reason is before the paperwrok comes back it is just a title I firearm but once it comes back the lower is now a NFA firearm. And this means the engraver needs to have the additional licensing to handle NFA items. Dolomite

good article on .223 vs 5.56
Dolomite_supafly replied to chances R's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
The difference between a .08" jump to the lands is ~100 fps. And the difference between 223 and 5.56 is larger than that. That is when you lengthen the bullet jump by that amount the pressures drop and in turn the velocity drops. And in the world of SBR's 100 fps is huge. If I had to have a gun with a 12.5 of shorter barrel it would NEVER be in 5.56. It is readily accepted that a FMJ bullet will not fragment below 2,500 FPS, even if it tumbles. Tumbling helps the bullet fragment but only if the velocity is high enough. And the bullet will only tumble if the twist is slow enough. Now take the average 10.5" gun shooting M855 and velocities are well below 2,500 fps in under 25 yards. A 12.5" gun will extend that to about 100 yards and a 14.5" gun will extend that to 200-250 yards. Because of this you need to rely on the bullet tumbling, even if it doesn't fragment, for it to be effective. Problem is in a 7 twist barrel the bullet will not tumble. So you wind up with a bullet that is too slow to fragment and too stabile to tumble. And this leaves 22lr type wound ballistics and yes a 22lr can kill, just not as fast as a bullet that is tumbling and fragmenting. This is why we are hearing of all the problems with the current M4. They have shortened the barrel, increased the bullet weight and increased the twist. This is an attempt to make a short range cartridge into a long range cartridge and in the process ruined it. The shorter barrel reduces velocities which affects the bullet's fragmenting characteristics. The increased bullet weight also reduces the velocity. And when you combine those reduced velocities with a overstabilized bullet from the overly fast twist you end up with a bullet that just passes through the "soft" target. Ideally if they wanted to improve the performance of the cartridge they would, at a minimum, slow the twist down. At least that way the bullet will at least tumble. But on top of that they would also need to reduce the bullet weight and thus increase the bullet velocities. These two things would improve the weapon so dramatically. Here is a pretty good read on the subject. http://stevespages.com/pdf/5_56mm_military_info.pdf Dolomite -
Thanks for the kind words. If there is anything else I can help you out with please feel free to post it. Although I answer PM's nearly daily about AR's I prefer it be done in public. It helps everyone gain some knowledge rather than just a person or two. Also, before you go about spending a ton of money on accessories get with some local AR shooters first. That way you can get an idea of how something feels before you spend the money. I can't tell you how much money I have wasted over the years buying something I though I would like but ended up hating. Dolomite

Map of Muslim Riots and Embassy Attacks

To give you an idea of how seriously they take things. We had an American worker who found part of a Koran. The book had been torn apart with pages laying around on the ground. The American, knowing it was very important, picked up all the pieces. He then turned it over to our terp who, in turn, turn turned it over to an Afghan worker on base. Within hours most of the Afghans on base were demanding to know which American had touched their Koran. They wanted to kill the American for disresepcting Allah. They said that a non-Muslim is not allowed to touch the Koran and because he did they needed to burn the items he touched as well as kill him for Allah. We had some serious security issues for weeks because of it and actually fired a bunch of workers as well as guards because they could not get beyond it. We even flew the American out to safeguard him. Being caught with something like the video would be a death sentence for the average Afghan. Dolomite -

I don't look down upon those that did not serve. It is for some and not for others, I understand that. If we were all soldiers then who would be taking care of the country on the civillian side? I don't think people are any less patriotic for not joining. And those who didn't join had sacrifices as well. For every Marine, Soldier, Airmen and Sailor in the services there are quite a few more civillian family members and they are all making sacrifices. The country would not be any better had this tshirt not been made but it being made is improving the economy is some small way. It is when we have all these small improvements that the country will start to improve as a whole. In the end it is just a tshirt that is helping to support someone and the economy. I would rather have the maker of the shirt making a living rather than sitting around with their hand out waiting for that government check like so many other Americans. Dolomite -
good article on .223 vs 5.56
Dolomite_supafly replied to chances R's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
This only confirms what I have been saying for a very, very long time. Shooting 5.56 in a 223 chambered gun will not cause the gun to blow up or some other catastrophic failure. At worst a primer will come out of the case because of pressures. And considering that 25% of the rifles tested failed to meet 5.56 chamber dimensions means that there are a lot of rifles out there with a 223 chamber. And if shooting 5.56 was such a big issue we would certainly hear of 1 in 4 guns blowing up. In the article there were guns that had "less than 223" dimensions and those guns did not dramatically fail when firing 5.56. It will cause a bit more wear and tear on your firearm. If your 223 firearm blows up when shooting 5.56 then your gun has some serious issues. Is it recommended to shoot 5.56 through a 223 chambered gun, no. But doing so from time to time will not cause the world to stop spinning or gravity to reverse like some people seem to imply. Pressure signs yes but no dramatic failure. What they do not mention is by lengthing throat in the chamber you are going to see reduced velocities. And in todays world of the too short of barrels and too heavy of bullets you need all the velocity you can get. And the tool he recommends goes beyond even the loose 5.56 leade dimensions. I do have a few issues with the article though. Implying that a warm barrel removes chrome any faster than normal is crazy. But even with that being said chrome is hardly the best option. As many of you have read Melonite treatment is hands down the best treatment for the longevity of the bore. It is way better than chrome lining. To end, I have NEVER heard of a 223 chambered gun blowing up from shooting 5.56. Dolomite -
I have recommended that same list to dozens of people starting out and never had anyone complain. Dolomite

No way it is $700 to get started. These are all available at Midway Usa. They normally have coupons online so you can save money as well. lee-perfect-powder-measure lee-auto-prime-hand-priming-tool-shellholder-package-of-11 frankford-arsenal-micro-reloading-electronic-powder-scale-750-grain-capacity lee-auto-prime-hand-priming-tool lyman-electronic-scale-powder-funnel-pan lee-classic-cast-breech-lock-single-stage-press hornady-lock-n-load-press-and-die-conversion-bushing-kit hornady-electronic-caliper-6-stainless-steel This is what it would minimally take to load. You would still need to buy the particular dies you need as well as bullets, primers and powder. I suggest the primers and powder be purchased locally. I would also suggest buying jacketed bullets in the begining, they are easier to deal with than cast. Cast bullets add another facet to reloading. People are going to say the Lee stuff is crap but I have used all these items for a few years now without a single issue. For the money the Perfect Powder Measure can't be beat. I prefer a electronic over a balance beam. Balance beams take a lot longer to settle than an electronic. No need to tumble your brass to clean them. Get some Lemishine at Walmart. Add a table spoon to some water and soak your brass for 24 hours. Every time you walk by give them a shake to aggitate them. Rinse them and let dry. Brass will be very clean and useable. This setup may not be as fast as a progressive but it allows you to learn the machanics of it. As far as supplies to reload you can get what you need from David, DLM37015 on here. He has all the supplies you could want or need to reload. The list above is under $200. Here are a few things to do to save money at the cost of convienence You could do away with the conversion bushings if you don't mind setting up your dies each time. I find it hard to make identical ammunition when I have to set the dies up each time. You could also do away with the powder pan and just weigh the powder in the casing. You just need to make sure to zero out the scale for each casing because they all weigh differently. You could also dip out the powder and not use the Perfect Powder Measure but that is a very slow going process. The Press has a priming tool on it but that is also another slow going process. You are also tied to your press to prime cases. With the hand primers you can watch TV while priming cases.

Its artistic expression, it is not their to subvert the United States. It is not some major crime against humanity, it is a T Shirt. I don't have a problem with it in the same way I don't have a problem with all the satyrical shirts you see making fun of Obama who is the president of the United States. Would you be just as pissed if it was George Washington's face on there, or Ronald Reagan's or is it just because it is the symbol of Obama? Regardless as to whether you agree with it or not someone is supporting the economy by selling them. And those Americans who buy them are doing the same as everyone else, finding something to show their support for their chosen candidate. Love him or hate him he is still the president of the US. I fought for the Flag of the United States and live with the injuries of that fight. If I am not pissed I fail to see how anyone else could be. I fought so someone that I do not know is able to make a statement without fear. And although I may not agree with it I would hate to think that what I go through on a daily basis was for nothing. What I would do is get a Sport, if you can find one, then use the extra money to add accessories to help it meet its requirements. Get a set of rails, foreward grip, magazines and a light. Also, every single used Sport I have seen sell lately has sold for more than the purchase price. Not to many guns are able to do that. Dolomite

With 9 twist you can shoot anything up to 77 grains out to probably 250-300 yards. I shoot 69 SMK's in my 9 twist guns very accurately. Other than the forward assist and port cover, which is a non issue, the Sport has better parts. The Sport's bolt is properly treated. IMHO, the Sport will serve you just as well and probably better. The melonite is better than chrome lined and doesn't affect accuracy like chrome sometimes can. Dolomite
