  1. Wonder if the Spyderco sharpeners would work - they make ceramic sharpening tools but not sure if they work better on steel and not on ceramic blades. But isn't one of the benefits of ceramics is the ceramic holds an edge longer? Speaking of Spyderco, I have it on good authority I will join the 21st century and have a Spyderco from Santa. I have several pocket knives that were my late Dad's but it is time to get an quick opener (gettting a Stretch, combo blade - at least that was what I asked for in my letter to Santa ).

    It's Here

LOL...I was looking at the news and Minnesota is really getting a storn - travel warnings, closing roads, etc. Yep, a little snow and ice - no worries, be happy. Our dogs like it when it snows - like a bunch of kids. Not sure if we will get much over here or not (Clarksville area). Watch out for those who don't know how to drive anyway when they get on your roads with a little slick.
  3. It ain't a liberal/conservative thing, Mike - it's the whole of government. Look at how much money has been made on security consulting, technology, new departments, etc - all in the name of "safety". Ridiculous to the extreme. Nero fiddles while Rome burns.
  4. Unfortunately I have to quite a bit and went thru my first "back scatter picture show" this past Wednesday (in Providence RI). You know the same x-ray technology can be deployed in a vehicle to "see" into houses. Lots of questions on 4th amendment, etc, on that little issue - having the ability but when/what/how is it legal to use? Government run amok and it ain't a liberal or conservative thing - it's a power thing from DC and state houses all around. I contended post Sept 11 and continue to do so that if we give in to the azzholes who want to kill, kill, kill (and mask it in some twisted version of a "religion"), they get a win. They do nothing but work to figure out a way to either do harm, disrupt life, or otherwise meet a goal of terror. Wasn't it Lenin who said the purpose of terrorism is to terrorize? We should not mistreat anyone, but it is time we rethink our "war on terror" - look for a context to the "war on drugs" and the total lack of efficacy (we are treating symtoms not the disease).
  5. Yeah, I agree the farce of the TSA is just that - it makes some people feel "safe" but I don't know why. Until we adopt the policies/practices of countries that profile we will continue to waste time, whilst those who wish us harm will do so at times or try to. The real concern is if they cannot do it physically they can do it fiscally - how much have we wasted on "Department of Homeland Security"? Oh well... Tragic death of the teenager, who may have been doing what teenagers do - something stupid without thinking of the seriousness of the action.
  6. Congrats. One of these days I want to get one - gotta get out of our self-imposed spending freeze first . Enjoy the gun!
  7. Boker makes some and I think there are others out there on the market. I don't know the pros/cons of them. Chefs seems to like them, but they are (I believe) very expensive - the ones used by Chefs. Some of the Bokers are around 100 bucks +/-.
  8. Thanks - I am really focusing on getting more flexible and do stretch a lot, even if I miss a workout day. What was amazing to me (I went to a trainer) was just HOW tight some muscle areas were; two months into it, I am already seeing gains in areas and loss in weight and inches around waist, etc. I have a ways to go to get back to "shipboard" duty shape, but will get there and realize now I have to maintain it. Thanks again for the reply.
  9. Holy Whopper, Batman...this will be something to watch unfold/find out more about.
  10. I decided a couple of months ago to get off my lazy behind and get back into shape. After a few years being retired from the USN and doing the corporate grind, I needed to get a grip on my fitness and health. Certainly health is a main reason for being fit, but my wife and I discussed the added advantage of being fit if some catastrophe occurs - natural or a man made - and you find yourself needing to engage in defense, bug out, or help others in distress. I'd be interested in others thoughts and routines. Mine, for now, includes cardio (intervals of fast walking/jogging, with incline added if on the treadmill), weights, core and abdominal strenthening, and overall weight training - with a focus on general strenght and not adding bulk. Cheers, the dog guy
  11. Nicely done - will be interested to see your final work.
  12. +1 and I like the way you think! But I still have the Umbrella policy, mostly cause I saw so many suits when living in CA, I reckoned the couple of hundred bucks a year was worth the protection (and having dogs, there is always a chance of someone getting bit and suing, not to mention the potential from even a lawful gun incident).
  13. Or as I was taught from a young age hunting: you own your shots. Same rule applies here, clearly and unless I am dreaming is also discussed in courses required for an HCP in the Great State of TN (at least it was at G&L a couple of years back).
  14. I am with the OP on Guns and Leather; bought a couple of guns there, did my carry class there, and am always happy with service, etc. Saw where one of the G&L gents was IM'ing you, so hope you can go there. Nothing against Buds - just like Guns and Leather. I also like TN Gun Country here in Clarksville - bought one gun there, good price (gives discount for retired or active military and also LEO).
  15. As OP have written, I understand the law suit would not prevail if you are fully justified and in compliance with TN law on use of deadly force. And I am not a lawyer, but took some advice from one and now have an "Umbrella" policy. You most likely can find one for about 200 bucks a year for around 2 million dollars of coverage. One provision is you might have to up your coverage on your car and home, as the Umbrella will kick in if/when those are exhausted. But a good Umbrella policy protects you from a wide range of issues - suggest you discuss with your insurance agent as to what it would cover - most will cover civil liability suits (like if your dog bites someone, even when your property is posted, etc - people just like to sue other people now days).
  16. We're glad to have you in TN and I agree, NJ is nuts on this latest effort. I also take your point to heart that things can change rapidly - all it takes is a party of loons to be in charge.
  17. More than likely, since the guys from OC would have been up in Strike Ops working on air plans. Today (12/7 - Pearl Harbor Day) I am up on CT (the town of Mystic); first time here - quaint little place. Cold up here but I think home is colder, at least for now.
  18. Did you know any of the guys in OC Division, by chance?
  19. You likely saw enough sadness of your own then, travelling in the music business. Has to be tough and not like the glamour displayed on shows.
  20. Yeah, he is great - have his music on my iPod; my body ages but my mind still lives in my 20s in some areas, LOL.
  21. I remember Cobain very well also and he did have a huge impact. Another place I got to live courtesy of Uncle Sam was Washington state and Seattle in the mid-80s was a great place for music - I think the place we went to was the Offramp - been a while. Unlike Clapton, Tyler and many others who eventually cleaned up, riding that Horse with No Name did not work out for Cobain at all. I also remember people being ugly to Cobain's widow at some of her shows afterward.
  22. I remember guys I knew talking about that - I was in Okinawa when the hostages crisis happened; the Ranger was diverted from a port call in RP to the Gulf (I was on r and r in Subic Bay). Crazy times and a you guys were sure as heck out there a looooonnnnnggg time.
  23. Guess we better avoid tar pits, cause I am right there with you. I remember a Christmas when my female cousin (a few years older than me) got Beatle dolls - so I know what you mean about the timeline and looking back. Seems like yesterday.
