Tennessee Could Penalize Publication of Permit Lists: The Tennessee legislature is considering legislation that would make it a felony to publish the state's concealed carry gun permits. For the last 10 years, gun backers in that state have bragged that permitted gun carriers aren't ever charged with gun crimes. That changed this week when a Memphis area man who had a permit and a gun shot another guy and was charged with second degree-murder. The Commercial Appeal in Memphis proceeded to post the state's concealed carry permit list, and now gun backers are pitching a fit…

Safety Department Statement on Handgun Permit Database

Released on Thu, Feb 12, 2009 - 9:26 am under

NASHVILLE --- Public complaints have recently been directed to the Department of Safety over the release of personal information from a searchable database of handgun permit holders on the Memphis Commercial Appeal website http://www.commercialappeal.com/data/. The searchable database can be found on the newspaper’s Data Center webpage and offers users to “find out who in your community is licensed to carry a weapon”.

The Department of Safety appreciates the privacy concerns of Tennessee’s handgun permit holders; however, Tennessee Code 10-7-503 provides that all state records are open to inspection to any Tennessee citizen and the agency in charge of the records cannot deny access to them unless otherwise provided by state law. Currently, there is no state law which prohibits the disclosure of handgun permit records. Therefore, if a newspaper or other person makes a public records act request, the Department provides the following handgun permit information:

Full Name

DOB

Address

Zip Code

County

Issue Date

Expiration Date

While the Department of Safety Office of Public Affairs complies with state law by providing the handgun information from the handgun database upon request, we do not control whether media outlets such as the Commercial Appeal decide to publish the database on their public websites.

In 2007, the Nashville Tennessean published the handgun permit database on its website before shutting the information down within hours of making it public.

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.

Check it out..

http://blogs.nashvillescene.com/pitw/2009/02/commercial_appeal_sticks_to_it.php

They called us "Gun Nuts" in their article rallying support for Commercial Appeal.

Here's my suggestion. ANYWHERE YOU SEE THE FREE NASHVILLE SCENE NEWSPAPER, TAKE AS MANY AS YOU WANT.

There's no limit, no obligation to read them, & if they all happen to end up in the trash at every location they leave them, their extremist opinions & insults will get VERY EXPENSIVE for them.. I'll start today!:)

Besides, you're doing the public a service. With less Nashville Scene circulation, there will be less spreading of STDs around Tennessee..

If their Advertiser's ads never get seen, they lose money! Because the advertisers poll people to see if the ads they are buying are effective. So I think its time to have a "Commercial Appeal Tea Party" of sorts.. Until they understand that what is permissible, is not always beneficial! Lets get started today!:)

Minimize their circulation by reading one line an hour from their crappy Newspaper, (I don't want you to have to pour bleach in your eyes) & then throw it away, & go back for another. Heck, take one for a conservative friend who will throw it away also! Hurry, while supplies last, & bankruptcy is only a probability for CA!

What the media fails to realize is that common criminals do not seek to get a permit to legally carry a gun so they can commit a crime. We as law bidng citizens seek getting our permit so that we can take part in a right given to us by our fore fathers of this great nation, but the difference is we have to pay for the right and to make things worse we have to be on display for the public through the media so that if something were to happen , that they could use the slightest thing to try and take our right away.
