HCP Renewal

My HCP is due for renewal in November so within the next two weeks I was going to DMV to renew mine. Does anyone know how long it takes for a renewal to come back?

They issue it to you on the spot. Or they did me when I re-did the address on mine after moving a few years back.

I didn't think you even had to go up there. You can do all that by mail now.

That was what I saw. If you go to http://www.state.tn.us/safety/handgun/renewals.htm, there is a form that you can download and do it by mail.

How to Renew Your Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit

• Renewals can be submitted up to six (6) months prior to the expiration date. Any person whose handgun carry permit expires and such person applies for a renewal within six (6) months from the date of expiration, such person shall only be required to comply with the renewal provisions. However, you may not lawfully carry a weapon until you receive a new permit. *If the renewal application is filed six (6) months or more from the date of expiration, such person shall, for all purposes, be considered a new applicant.
  
• The fee is $50.00. A background check will be conducted on all renewal applicants. A new permit will be mailed from the Central Handgun Permit Office.
  
• A permit holder can submit a Renewal Application at any Driver License Center or renew by mail. Applications may be downloaded (click here) or, to receive a renewal application by mail call (615) 251-8590.
  
• Complete and sign your application. Mail the application and the $50.00 fee payable by check or money order to the following address:

Nashville, Tn 37243-1000

• Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
  
• FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

*Shall be required to meet all of the original requirements, including an eight (8) hour safety course, completing a new application, fingerprinting, and $115 non-refundable application fee.

I did mine via mail. It came back in the mail in two weeks. I renewed as soon as I got the notice so there was less of a chance of being without a permit because of some error on the state's part.

Reef, do you have a link to do it online? I know there is a place for Drivers License, but I haven't seen one for HCP's.

I know that, Tungsten http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22882&postcount=4, he said he did it online, I was assuming (my mistake) that he did it like the Drivers License renewal that you can do online. Pay your money, fill in the information and they send you a new one. I did that this year and it worked great.

If you will re-read Reef's post, he said he did his by mail. He didn't say he did it online. That's why I linked you back to the form (online) that you can download and mail back.

It's an imperfect system.

Yea, I edited my post almost immediately, but you were still e-mailed the original post which said I renewed it online. I was thinking about when I did my driver's license renewal.

I printed that PDF and mailed it in.

No it does not. Mine still expires four years after the expiration date of the previous one, even though I received it quite early.

If you apply for renewal at a Drivers License Center, your receipt will serve as your license, if you dont receive the new license by your experation date. That is, if you believe the personel at the Jackson, Tn. testing center.

When filling out the application for renewal at the bottom of the form it has applicant's drivers license# (which is the same as the HCP#) and Exp: date, now here is the question do you put the expriation date of you hcp or your drivers license?

If it asks for the expiration date right after it asks for your DL#, I'd put the expiration date of the DL.

Thanks Reef and I just got off the phone with them and they also said the expiration of the DL as they can see everything about you on the system. Thanks again.
