Relocating to TN (Parsons/Decaturville area)

Recommended Posts

Evening All,

Family looking to relocate to Parsons/Decaturville area.  Looks to be a lack of gun ranges/gun clubs in the general area. This a Tennessee thing?  Most folks just shoot on private land?

Any recommendations?  Seems like Natchez State Park has a range.  Don’t mind joining a club.

Thanks!

Regards,,

Steve

Welcome to the forum and to TN. I’m assuming by “relocate” and the wording of your question that you’re coming from out of state.

Unfortunately, you’re probably right about a lack of ranges outside of the major population areas (Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga). People in the rural areas are probably shooting on their own land, or a family member’s or friend’s.

If there’s a wildlife management area out that way, you may be allowed to shoot there. You’ll need to research that.

Hopefully someone familiar with that area will chime in. There may be a local hunting club that has a range nearby. Those may or may not turn up in a google search. You might try posting your question in the “Hunting and Fishing” section of the forum, too.

I’m not sure what states you’re comparing TN to but with the exception of out west, I’d say we do rely on shooting on private land in TN. The nice thing is many people offer this opportunity to friends and neighbors. I’ve shot on neighbors land every city/town I’ve lived in throughout TN and with the 4th of July coming up, it’s a prime opportunity.

Coming from PA.  Little private land shooting here, but clubs and ranges readily available.

Thumbs up per shooting on private land.   Little in the way of laws/restrictions out in the TN country (e.g. noise restrictions, etc.) per shooting?

Your mileage might vary on noise problems but personally I’ve not encountered a problem in any of the smaller cities/town (sub 10k pop).

What part of PA? I lived in York for several years before we came to TN. I really liked that area.

I’d check whatever county and local municipality laws there might be regarding noise and discharge of firearms, but probably not much in more rural areas. Of course you’ll want to be mindful about how your neighbors feel about it - assuming they’re within earshot.

Nearby Perry County has a range near Linden. I've never been, so I'm not sure what you can shoot there. It may be a skeet/trap range for all I know. Regardless, I haven't shot at a state park or TWRA range that I didn't love, so I'd got to Natchez Trace Firing Range if I was out your way. I hope you find something you like and welcome to TN.
