Local Sources for Plastic Barrels?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how many of you guys/gals use a rain barrel system or store water in barrels? where do you get them from?

have been thinking about putting rain barrels in for garden water etc, but also a few clean water barrels stored in the garage. would it be better to use 30 gallon barrels as opposed to 55 gallon barrels?

i did find some at the local Rural King but am unsure what ws in them previously and noone there seemed to know either. dont want to use chemical barrels.

Nashville Barrel (or Drum and Barrel, can't remember exactly) sells new and used water barrels. The place is actually in Fairview, but I talked to them about 3 months ago. New 55-gallon barrel costs about $60, but the used barrels (food grade, usually with drink syrup or something similar in it previously) were quoted at $10-15.

FWIW in the Knoxville area:

I picked up several new 55 gal. barrels from them a couple of years ago for rain barrels and fresh water storage. They were $35.00/each.

I used a 3x3 sheet of plywood and some 2x2's and metal wheels I had around to make a movable platform for the fresh water barrels.

A water barrel siphon pump is really helpful.

@TSC tractor supply co. you can also get the chemicals to turn it into drinking water in an emergency. or a lid with an air valve to pressurize it so you can wash a car, or water the lawn.....

I built a house several years ago for a customer that wanted some rain barrels made for her house. We went to Beaman Bottling and they gave us all we could fit on a trailer. They are nice food grade poly white barrels that are about 1/4" thick. This is what they receive the syrup in for the Pepsi products. Beware, as soon as you cut the tops off, bees swarm to that stuff!!

I don't know about the 30 gallon, or 55 gallon barrels, but i do know where I can get a lot of 15 gallon plastic barrels. They use them for laundry detergent and dish detergent so they will need to get cleaned out rellay good, but they are free.
