Coyote Round of Choice for ARs in .223?

Recommended Posts

Just bought some reloading supplies at the gun show this weekend, and want to get into reloading. Naturally, I'll be loading a lot of rounds to punch paper with, as the AR seems to have a healthy appetite for brass, lead, and gun powder! But, I wanted to know what you coyote hunters that were using the ARs preferred as the premier "yote" round for Tennessee. I know that the pelts aren't usually worth keeping, but I'd like to use a round that would kill DRT and still preserve the hide. Opinions are always great, but if you've got some actual experience with a certain round, that would be great too.

Thanks for your opinions and help.

I don't use a AR15 but I got a Savage 110e in .223 and a 55gr. spitzer works pretty good. It seems to have good punch. I use to use Sierra's but since I can't find them anymore around here I use Speer. Load them to about 3200 fps. Thats what I do. A 50 gr. would probably work ok too.

Don't know about a reload round but I use winchester silver ballistic tips 55gr.

What length barrel do you have on your Bushy, Hunting 101? I bought some 55gr. at the gun show in soft points. I'm going by the Reloader's Bench tomorrow, and may pick up some heavier... like 62gr or 68gr. Anyone shot any of them at yotes? I haven't tried them yet, but I bought a box of the Winchester "Varmint" loads in the white box at Wally World. I believe they're 45gr, and was wondering if they might be a little light for coyotes? Thanks for the feed back. Thanks.

Plain old PSPs in 55 grains. I do have some Nosler Ballistic tips but I'm hoarding those for zombies.

x2 Cheaper stuff works just fine. I use whatever I can find in 55 gr. in SP or HP. Right now, my AR-15s are zeroed for 55 gr.

Never shot the 45 gr. White box.

Sorry, my bad. I thought I read somewhere on here that someone was congratulating you on getting a yote, and on your Bushy drawing first blood. maybe they thought you had a Bushmaster.

Anyway, I wanted a 20" H BAR, but got a 16" H BAR in a trade. I remember the round you're using blowing a pretty good hole in that bobcat, but don't remember it doing so much damage to the yote. I've been jerking around with sights, flattop risers, and optics on mine so much that I haven't been able to get settled down on a good 100 yard zero in. Maybe next time I go to the Viola shooting range.

If you want we could meet somewhere and you could look at my Nikon Coyote special if you wanted damn good scope.

I appreciate the offer 101, but that sounds like a pretty pricey scope. My budget is pretty tight right now, so I'll just have to see what the one I have will do. That sounds like a real nice scope you have there. Did you zero at 100, 150, or 200 yards? I'm thinking for Middle Tennessee, that most of my shots are going to be inside 150 yards... maybe less.

I use a 16 inch light weight AR in 223 shoot 55 grain hornady sx bullets .cheap but very good oh I use a 3x9 simmons scope works for me

Thanks for the info. Mine is a 16" H Bar Bushy I bought a couple of boxes of the Wal-Mart Winchester White Box "Varmint" loads in the 45 grain JHP. It says they're high velocity at 3600 FPS. Has anyone shot a coyote with this load, and if so, how did it do? Thanks again.
