243 is a nice caliber. It is versatile, good for a variety of game in a variety of sizes. It is, I think, a necked down 308 (but I am not sure if you can resize the brass to work??), though a bit less powerful than the 308 in terms of momentum/recoil. A good round for shooters who do not want a harsh recoil, young shooters, etc. Very, very popular caliber and a good choice as its one of the ones you can always find ammo for, and a variety of ammo not the 1 box take it or leave it supply that you find on a shelf for more exotic calibers. The cartridge is capable of great accuracy and good range in a solid gun. A very solid choice for deer, or say 500 yard shooting. You can't go wrong with owning a gun in the 5 or 6 most common calibers, and this is one.

I cannot really comment on any modern guns, my 243s are old, a 700 and a finnbear.

A brand new H&R handi rifle is like $275 or so, or was the last time I priced one before going in another direction. Burris makes a good scope; most of their models are about $200 or more new (a couple of $100 and $150 models exist, however). So you are looking at a package that would probably cost $350 or more NEW, pre tax and pre fees. It could be as much as a $450 package. So the price, at the worst, is probably reasonable.... if its in like new condition..
