more fuel efficient car

Recommended Posts

I own an 03 Impala and they're nice if boring transportation. Reliable, decent mileage for the size.

That said, I'm taking the bus to work these days. Inconvenient, but trading a 40 mile commute for a 6 mile commute makes a huge difference.

Another vote for Honda. i have a 94 Accord with almost 300k miles on it and still gets 25+ MPG. That is a lot better than my explorer V8 4x4 which gets 16 mpg. My Subaru Outback also gets outstanding MPG and will likely run forever plus the AWD will go anywhere.

I had a diesel 300 Mercedes which went for 300+k before I sold it to my college roommate's mother. She still has it and it now has over 450k miles on it.

In regards to GM products...

1997 Chevy Lumina with the 3.1 liter V6. Just turned over 159,000 today. I've traced the mpg's for the last 8 fill-ups, and even with the AC running wide open, about a 50/50 ratio of town/city driving, I'm still getting 28-29 mpg out of it.

Can't beat that with a stick. I put about 2100 miles a month on it. Paid $3,000 for it two years ago.

In comparison, my wife's Mercury Villager minivan is getting about 16 mpg. It's for sale, matter of fact...

Are you trading your truck for it? Do you have enough value in the truck to cover the diff ( I assume it's paid off, but you never know)? If you are paying cash, you'd have to go many, many, many thousands of miles at 15-17MPG to make the diff.

Just something to think about.

here's a good site to compare things

http://www.mpgomatic.com/mileage_calculator.html

I have '99 GMC 4wd Sierra EXT Cab. And a '07 GT Mustang.

I want to ditch the Sierra for a smaller truck, but the way I compared things, over the next 5 years, I would save about $7k in fuel costs. But a smaller truck that only gets 10mpg more, would cost me $20k to get what I want that is comparable (4WD is a must).

So it wouldn't make sense to trade. I drive 70 miles a day which is a decent commute. The way I used the calculator, it's cheaper to drive the car buying premium gas than to drive the truck, which I alternate driving both.

But at $4.25 a gallon at 25 mpg vs. $3.95 a gallon at 15 mpg I come out ahead.

So you have to decide where you're at financially. If you have to go in debt or spend more cash to save 10-15mpg, it's probably not worth it. No, it's not probably, it's just not.

If you put a chrome fart can on it, you will get another few mpg, and drop the 0-60 to 4.2.:P

Was checking fuel mileage on a few cars and a Porshe 924

The final 2.0 ltr engine had a true Porsche designed cylinder head, pistons etc and was fitted with Bosch K Jetronic mechanical fuel injection. It produced a max output of 125 bhp at 6500 rpm and with the help the slippery 0.32 cd coupe's body would push the 924 to a claimed 125 mph top speed yet still return over 40 mpg on a run, which even today is very respectable. So despite what many think the 924 was and is a true Porsche which just happens to use some sourced VW / Audi parts (much like early 356's).
