When I am not carrying a gun, it is not by choice...

Range session: On-Target, Murfreesboro. This weekend?
molonlabetn replied to molonlabetn's topic in Events and Gatherings
Their site says 10am for Sat... but I'm not sure how up-to-date their site is. If not, then 11am at the earliest... -
Myself & ProguninTN have corresponded briefly about meeting up at On-Target this weekend for an informal meet & greet, shooting, and possibly a meal. We wanted to see who all would come, if invited. The range is open till 10pm on Friday... I am free that night, or Saturday morning/mid-day... May as well make this a poll. I will enjoy meeting whoever comes...

There are alot of arguments and evidence for and against the effectiveness of this particular weapon system (5.7x28mm: Five-seveN and P90). Here's my take: Pros: - Light weight - High capacity (small, light ammo means more ammo can be carried in the weapon and on the body) - Low recoil (faster follow-up shots) - Flat external ballistics (shoots close to POA at longer ranges) - Marginally better vest & helmet penetration (with restricted ammo) - Can be cheaply reloaded with widely available light .224" projectiles - Can questionably be quite effective with just FMJ ammo, due to projectile internal ballistic in-stability (read: tumbling/key-holing), similar to slow-twist Vietnam era M16A1 performance with 55gr FMJ. Cons: - Bulky pistol (no smaller than an M9, though lighter) - Questionable terminal performance of caliber, in general. Identical performance as .22WMR (from rifle-length barrels) with the same projectiles. - High cost of weapon, accessories (mags) and ammo supplies - Lack of availability to civilians of premium ammo (SS190 & SS192), which seems to be the only effective ammo available for this caliber. The big issue, to me, is the terminal performance of the caliber. A 31gr SS190 projectile (similar to a 1/2 size SS109 projectile from a 5.56) at 2133fps has only 1/4 the KE of 5.56 at the muzzle, and bleeds velocity much faster with range, due to lower cross-sectional density. It is essentially as potent at the muzzle as a SS109 projectile is from an M16 after 600yd of flight... The gel tests that I have seen seem to indicate low penetration, >11", even in bare gel. The cavities created are comparatively smaller than those of any premium .45 (or even 9mm) JHP. Compared to 9mm FMJ the difference is marginal... the only advantage going for the 5.7 is better soft-vest penetration (48 layers of kevlar). I might get one as a survival gun, but only if I could manufacture ammo in bulk, or get SS190 or SS192... and acquire a P90 as well. I certainly wouldn't carry it. These guns are a novelty item... kinda on the other end of the spectrum from Desert Eagles.

...so I pulled over to the first range on the right And I feel so good, ain't no doubt Wanna laugh and shout about it 'Cause I once carried tupperware But I don't carry tupperware no more Well, I heard a cop shot his leg today "Only fires when you pull the trigger", they say ...doesn't matter if it's not a finger And I feel so good, ain't no doubt Wanna laugh and shout about it 'Cause I once carried tupperware But I don't carry tupperware no more My heart is jumpin' and my head is swimmin' And I want to arm all men and women Oh I feel so good, ain't no doubt Wanna laugh and shout about it 'Cause I once carried tupperware But I don't carry tupperware no more On that joyful day, yes on that glorious day The day I threw my Glocks away The angel told me, "Oh, ye man of sin, Open up your bleeding heart and let John Browning in!" And I feel so good, ain't no doubt Wanna laugh and shout about it 'Cause I once carried tupperware Buuu-ut I do-ooon't car-ry tupperwaaa--a-aaaare no mooooore!

Insert a dowel in the barrel, and press the dowel up against a wall/work-bench, pushing on the grip... this will force the cartridge back against the slide and push everything open. You probably won't be able to re-use the cartridge or bullet though.

1. I own and carry firearms in order to end any un-avoidable deadly confrontation which arises, and have a high likelihood of survival for myself and my family... Whether it be a thug invading my home, a mugger in an alley, or any other form of SHTF. 2. I enjoy plinking and target-practicing for fun... it is a very satisfying recreation. 3. To be able to, if necessary, provide food for my family through hunting game... and to protect our small garden plot from varmints & large pests. Even just the 2nd reason is good enough for me to warrant keeping firearms... but the first and third are essential, when planning for the worst-case scenario, and cannot be truly effective without the competence gained through #2.

12" - to - 18" is the range specified by the FBI required for acceptable performance, even after penetrating barriers & clothing.

Here's a good read... FBI evaluation of .357sig, and their comparison to 9mm and .40: http://www.recguns.com/Sources/IIIC2q8.html No surprise, 9mm was far out-matched by .357 & .40, in the aspects covered by the FBI... and .357sig did marginally better than .40. It also was more consistent thru barriers, clothing & such.

I'll tell you who pisses me off regularly, on 99.7... is Kevin Miller (morning)... His position on most things isn't usually what I disagree with, it's the way he presents himself and interacts with his guests. He is an equestrian's rump.

Every day (in the car). A smart man, with a good heart and financial prowess... Quite entertaining at times, as well! I usually catch some of Phil Valentine afterwards...

This is where we fight? Confiscation topic.

Nowadays, public education is more about training students to regurgitate the filtered and coloured 'facts' which are recited to them. Problem solving and basic reasoning are down-played... multiple-choice questions are the name of the game. Meanwhile, we are surrounded by oblivious masses of young people who couldn't care less about truth. It's all about the perception of knowledge, without responsibility or wisdom. As one young man who was educated at home from 4th grade until high-school graduation by a mother and father who's sole purpose was to instill in me the tools and the drive to find answers for myself; it is frustrating to see the 'successful' lemmings around me every day, following the influences of society, without any self-conceived notion of HOW or WHY their existence is significant... Only caring about how they 'feel', and how they are percieved... This country has been reduced to a popularity contest, meanwhile liberty dies. -

Probably because Wal-mart holds FFLs which are valid in each of those states... -

I think another way to look at this, is, to ask yourself how you would protect and provide for your children if you gave up your weapons. IF it comes to that, this society will be in such a bad way that there will only be 2 choices: - dependance entirely on ones own resources and initiative or - dependance on the government, in return for complete control and vulnerability to its corruption and tyranny Simply look at history (and current events in other countries) to find which choice has always resulted in a more favorable outcome for oppressed people... So, resolve now where you will fight... You really need to know where that line in the sand is before you cross it. -
http://www.2aforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=13392&page=1#Post13392 I think these guys are on to something... With enough members, we could do something similar here. At least for a 10/22 or something...

Remember to wear as much tactical gear as possible... including a Molle vest, thigh-holster, day-pack (with CamelBak), 5.11 pants, balaclava and ninja wall-climbing boots. Make sure you announce that you intend to conceal all of this under a trench coat. You'll pass for sure! But seriously... Have fun, learn as much as you can, and when you go out to shoot, remember: front-sight on-target and squeeeeze... You'll do fine. no need to be nervous. What kind of handgun are you taking?

For really high magnification optics, when using a rest or bi-pod, and shooting at a single, un-moving target... I sometimes might close my weak eye.... say if the sun were really bright or something... But if I think that I'll have to re-aquire a target which will move outside the FOV of the scope, I keep them both open... even if the weak eye is squinted just a bit to reduce glare. No point in losing track of a target because I (literally) have tunnel vision! Remember: - tunnel vision can help you kill - peripheral vision can keep you alive

Both eyes open for all sights and optics... It's really not that hard to focus through a magnified scope while alternatly using the 'weak' eye to scan for the target. Red-Dot scopes are designed for use with both eyes open, and so are ghost-ring sights. The most important thing is to determine which eye is dominant, and be able to conciously use it.
