1. If you are a Sam's club member they had some items that match most of your points. That might be a place to start research and go from there. I helped install one if the wired 8 camera systems a couple of years ago and it was easy once you got the wires pulled to set up. I think you would need a separate editing software for most of the brands that I have seen.
2. I am looking at getting into reloading as well and the classic turret seems to be the best deal. Graf and sons has the best price I can find and the shipping is reasonable. The kit has almost everything needed to start. I have been reading all of the threads under reloading on here, and started one, for information. There are a bunch in here with some varying views on how to start, but each has a valid point. http://www.grafs.com/catalog/product/productId/23840/inline/1
3. I still have open sights on mine, but have shot many a round through a handi-rifle with aluminum scope mounts (a friend bought one at the same time). I never had an issue, and I know that rifles has over 1000 rounds through it. We had a bit of fun with that rifle.... Sad to say that mine only has about 50 rounds through it.
4. The problem with this is it open up calibers like the .35 Whelen. That is not a "primitive" weapon and I know lots of people that use them in the early season in Mississippi. I used a 45-70 Govt that had open sights. That lowered the effective range to around 75 yards for an ethical shot. I just never got into the muzzleloading fever, but would live to get a chance to shoot a true muzzle loader.
5. I am looking at one such kit by Lee, but it is around $200. The press will load larger cartridges then the cheaper version. Also some single stage kits are around that price. So far for my interests the classic turret kit by Lee seems to be the best value.
6. Thanks for the information. I hope to work on the bench this weekend, and think i am going to do a 2'x4' top and drill through the frame to attach my press. That should control the flex and i think i am just going to do a double box frame with some stringers on the side. That will give me a shelf and table top both made with 3/4 hardwood. If needed i can always use the excuse to build some thing else. I will have to see how i am going to attach it to a wall to do away with any tilt. Anymore info.... P.S. thanks Dolomite for the recommendation, but the kit I am looking at has most of those items plus the manual for under $200. Plus the turret press can be run as a single stage or as a turret. I plan on starting with the single stage setup.
7. The heavy duty table is the one I am thinking about building. I would adapt as needed. It is number 5 on the PDF. http://www.strongtie.com/ftp/fliers/DIY-PROJECT08.pdf
8. The classic kit comes with the Pro disk measure, and I am looking at bumping up to a 2'x4'competition bench. Is a 3/4 hardwood plywood top enough for the press to mount too? Also how do you mount your presses to the bench? I am looking at over hanging the plywood because I have a 2x4 running the outside edge of the bench. Do I need to put an extra support under the plywood? I am not wanting to drill through the .703 of the plywood and the 3.75 board... I would leave about 3.75 over the bownext frame and put a 1x4 under it to spread the force if needed....
9. I know that everyone loves to give opinions so I am asking what you think about this as an initial set-up. I plan on expanding as needed... Lee classic turret press kit - includes press, safety primes, scale, case prep tools, and some lube. 2'x2' home made bench with counterweight on the lower shelf. Tumbler. I am planning on loading 9mm to start then adding .380, .300 win mag, and 30-06 Springfield. Along with other calibers as I gain guns. I am asking options before buying. What recommendations are out there? I know I will need more space eventually but will not be storing components on the bench. I have a separate shelf for that. Also any local places in Knoxville that carry presses or can order them? I hate ordering on line after having 2 credit cards hacked. Thanks ahead of time.
10. They already state that non-student adults can have a firearm in their car on campus, why exclude schools from this issue. See TCA 39-17-1309 for the current laws dealing with campus carry.
11.
The only 'incident' we have ever had was several years ago, she was around three at the time, she was holding my hand in line at Walmart. She was swinging around and having a good time. She slammed into my hip and smacked her head on my gun. She screamed at the top of her voice "Daddy, your gun hit me on my head!" Seems it scared the woman in line behind me bad enough she had to pick another line.
My wife and I just feel out laughing at this. I definitely agree that education is the best option. Funny story, when I was a kid probably around 6, I had a single shot 410. My mom asked me to get it so she could kill a snake that she found in the yard. I told her no because my dad said never to touch it unless he was with me. Needless to say she wasn't happy with me, but when dad got home. He told me that I did right because I followed the rules for me to keep the gun. We still laugh about it.
12. I shoot off of Boyd's Creek regularly and hunt there too. It depends on where you are. No laws in the county in either Knox or Sevier that I am aware of. It is a great area.
13. Here are two recipes that I enjoy. The first is a party snack/desert and the second is great when using deer sausage (Holidays mean deer hunting). Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball (and Graham crackers) (~32 servings (yeah right)) unknown 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened ½ cup of butter, softened ¾ cup confectioners’sugar 2 tablespoons brown sugar ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips ¾ cup finely chopped pecans 1. Beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth, mix in confectioners’ sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover and chill in refrigerator for 2 hours. (works best in a metal bowl) 2. Shape chilled mixture into a ball. Wrap with plastic and chill another hour. 3. Roll cheese ball in finely chopped pecans and serve with graham crackers. I mix the pecans in the ball instead of rolling it. It is easier, and I also chill in the freezer instead of the refrigerator. Hogs in a Sleeping Bag (Paula Deen) also known as an oversized pig in a blanket. 16 Ounces of sausage (you want enough to have 6 pieces approximately 4 inches long). 2 sheets of puff pastry, thawed and lightly rolled out (you can also use crescent rolls) 1 egg Serving sauces to taste. Preheat oven to 400°F If using pastry cut into thirds (six strips) or use two triangles of crescent rolls and roll sausage into puff pastry/crescent roll. Place on baking sheet Beat egg and brush generously over pastry. Bake for about 20 minutes or until pastry is golden brown Happy holidays and good hunting!
14. Thanks for all the food for thought. I am looking at either practicing with condition 3 carry or a pocket pistol with a manual saftey such as a Bodyguard. 380. I will have to play with my timing and see which is a faster carrying method and will probably utilize both at times. I was already looking at a bedside pistol safe, and I keep all my rifles and long guns in a safe. Thanks again.
15. I just have to throw out a Hotty Toddy. And I just hope Alabama doesn't win.
16.
If it's safe for you to carry around other people without fear of a ND, I don't know why carrying around children would be any different. I have sister who is opposed to concealed/open carry, and for some strange reason she is even more opposed when it comes to her grandchildren. I've never been able to understand why. So, I just carry concealed when I'm around them. No one knows I have it on me. So far my weapon has not gone insane, unholstered itself and gone on any murderous shooting sprees.
I appreciate the humor, but when actively playing with a child things can get bumped and fall out. Most holsters are not equipped with level II or III retention.
17. Let me say this quickly. I carry safely and always have. If it because of my mindset that I ask this question. Before I use any weapon, firearm or otherwise, I evaluate my personal abilities and comfort level with the weapon. The Minotaur is the holster I choose because of the design that is rigid enough for safety and comfortable enough to allow me to carry it daily. It completely covers the trigger guard and I buy the holster that will fit the full size version on my firearm and adapt it so even the muzzle is fully protected. Yes I am a little OCD about handling weapons, but my life may depend upon it. I am not concerned about carrying while with my child, but am looking for options for when I am out and active with her. As in playing in a park or playground.
18. As the title states I want to know how (if any) have a small child around affects your carry habits. Background, as the proud father of a 5 month old baby girl. I have evaluating my current carry methods. I normally carry a Glock 26 in a IWB Compt-tac Minotaur. I carry fully loaded. I lock it in a safe when going to sleep as I have a 34 that I keep on my dresser (unloaded with a full magazine next to it). As my daughter becomes more active daily I become more concerned about carrying while playing and interacting with her. At home of I am playing I disarm and put it on top of my kitchen cabinets (~7 feet) where not even my wife can reach. But as she grows and we start venturing into parks and okay areas I see a problem arising... What have done or seen done in these situations, or what thoughts do you have? I don't like carrying without one in the chamber, but may to reduce the possibility of a AD.
19. Just two cents, but pick up some snap caps and have someone load a magazine mixing a snap cap in the magazine. You can find out really quick if you flinch. Just changing from my Glock 34 to my 26 I can find myself flinching at times. Understand that I am not saying flinching is your problem (it doesn't look like a flinch to me), but it doesn't hurt to throw a snap cap in. I frequently do it when plinking to make sure that I am not creating any bad habits that would carry over to a competition.
20. The PK380 is nice. I shoot it as much as my Glock 34 and the PK has pink grips.... my friends make fun of it until they shoot it. It probably gets shot more than any of our other guns unless it is the P22.
21. My wife has a PK380. It is a great gun, but doesn't like some ammo. The flat nosed FMJ can have some ftf issues. She started with the p22 then moved to the PK380.
22. It is true that you don't need a gun. I have let many people borrow my guns before. The reason I started this thread was in regards to non-magnified optics. I understand (somewhat) the ban on magnified scopes at friendly ones, and I did have a gun specifically for 'outlaw' shoots but no optic on it. This is my 870 Wingmaster that is originally a 1978 shotgun, but I replaced the stock and that raised the sight picture to the point of it needing a optic... anyway. I will just have fun with my old model 12 16 gauge.
23. Normally all you need is a shotgun and some cash. Normal procedure in the ones I have been to is there is a round of about 10 shooters . They each shoot at their target and either closest pellet to center or most pellets on target wins the round and the turkey. You pay for each shot. $3 to $5 is average. I prefer to compete with most pellets but everyone I see in TN is closest to center.
24. Just wondering if it is standard to not allow optics at a turkey shoot? I have been to several before but just put a Truglo on my 870 last year and got turned away from one. Was planning on going to one tomorrow but don't want to run up against a problem.
