1.
This +100. You probably wouldn't want her or anyone else regardless of experience picking out your gun, why presume to do it for someone else? Give her an opportunity to make an educated choice and you and her will both be better off.
I second this as well. That is why I started my post with let her try a Walther PK380.
2. Let her try the Walther PK380. I describe it as a .380 on a 9mm frame. There were some recalls on some serial numbers earlier this year, but it was a limited number. My wife's one is pink and has over 1000 rounds through it with no problem except it doesn't like flat nose FM bullets. Had a couple of FTFs with them. It is easy to rack and very fun to shoot. The only down side is the take apart process. Multiple women have shot my wife's and atleast 3 have bought one after shooting it.
3. The Sport is a nice AR. I just saw an advertisement for one under $600 new... I don't want to overstep boundaries and name a store that isn't affiliated with THO, but just to give you an idea about current prices. Doubt that price lasts long now.
4. Thanks for all the congratulations. I went out this morning and heard at least 5 differents birds within hunting range of my intial set-up for tomorrow. Now I hope I can get one that I want to shoot close enough. The guy I normally hunt with is wanting to get one with his crossbow this years so that is going to be fun. I like calling almost as much as I like shooting the birds. Plus my shoulder likes it more... Good luck to all, and can't wait to see some pictures.
5. Turkey fever has set in.... BYW, my wife is expecting our first child, and it is looking like it is going to be a little girl. Can't wait to introduce her to hunting for turkeys.
6. I patterned the ole 870 ('79 wingmaster) yesterday. I have been hearing a few, but lost the main place I hunted last years. I am going to try and call in a few for some friends that are wanting to go. I enjoy calling about as much as shooting. Side note, has anyone shot the Hornady shells that are supposed to be shot in modified or improved cylinder? I saw them for the first time yesterday and thought it might add another obstacle to overcome...
7. I had fun at this match as well. It was my first IDPA match and first pistol competition period. I think that I did pretty well for a first-timer. I ranked in the top 30 overall (they just posted the results). I look forward to coming back up there and shooting again. Hopefully I will make the USPSA in a few weeks. I just need to pick up a few more mag holders... sschrick, I would definitely recommend going to a match and try it out. The guys up there were friendly (even though there were some frustrated with all the new shooters oh well). Nice job with the camera bubbiesdad.
8. Ok, I was misunderstood. I lived in Mississippi till 2009. A valid permit holder can carry openly or concealed in the state of Mississippi. In MS you can get a Concealed carry license. This allows for concealed carry. There is legal precedent for a holstered weapon to be considered as a concealed weapon. This license therefore allows concealed carry and what is commonly referred to as open carry. TN HCP allows for open and concealed carry in the state of TN. Mississippi recognizes the TN HCP as equivalent to the MS CCL. This means that a person with a TN HCP can carry a weapon in the state of MS in accordance with MS's laws. The question as I understood it was: Can a TN resident with a valid TN HCP carry "open" in the state of MS? The answer is yes. You still have to abide by the state laws though.
9. As long as you have a TN HCP it shouldn't matter. Mississippi recognizes the TN HCP, and that allows you to carry open or concealed in both TN and MS. I assume that you do have the TN HCP since you said that you carry concealed.
10. Thanks for the information, and thanks 2Alpha and perjohn for the offer of loan for this weekend. Unfortunately I am out of town this weekend. I had hoped to be back today, but will not be back till Monday. I noticed that ORSA has a IDPA on the first weekend of the month and I am going to try to be there on March 3rd and will try to come up for the USPSA shot in March as well. Thanks again for the information, and I will take everyone's advice and try them both out for myself. God Bless and Have fun shooting!
11. I second the Remora. I carry a Glock 26 and love it. I also have carried a Walther PK380 in it. It works.
12. Ok, just going to throw this out there. IDPA vs USPSA. Which do you prefer and why? I am looking to try getting into some competitions (probably at ORSA) and figured that this would be a good way to find out some information. I plan to go with the equipment needed to participate, but will probably just observe the first time up. I live a good hour away in Sevier county so if anyone knows of some closer competitions please let me know, or any of you that participate at ORSA in Oak Ridge give me some information about the competitions. Just to tidy things up a little, I have a Glock 34 and am looking for some equipment to use so I am asking for some recommendation on LOCAL (Knoxville/Maryville/Sevierville) shops that carry some decent IDPA/USPSA legal holsters.
13. Quick question... Is it posted??? My wife and I are planning on swinging by sometime this weekend to browse, and I like to know before I get all the way to the door. My wife fusses over having to bring her gun back to the car.
14. Just my two cents, but as a guy who has studied past school shootings from a psychological aspect. I am glad that they locked down the school. My wife is a teacher and if someone is seen with a weapon near her school I would rather them be safe then sorry. The police did the correct thing by checking on a situation where multiple people stated concerns about the safety of children. As far as discussion about open carry, I personally don't want someone to know I am carrying. I believe that most criminals are not stupid. If they see my weapon before I see that they are a threat, I lose my edge and become their first target. Also my "safe versus sorry" logic is why I carry a gun as often as possible.
15. Just a side note, but I turkey hunt with a 1978 model 870 Wingmaster, it is older than I am. Of course I have replaced the barrel and the put on a black sure-shot stock on it (still have the originals). If you like the gun and it shoots well then I would be happy, and would think about checking the date of manufacture. I don't know of any gun store that checks that before selling a "new" gun they get. Anyway hope the gun treats you well.
16. Check out this website, there is a phone number that you can call with question about SC. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division
17. I recently purchased a Remora No-Clip holster for my Glock 26 (also works for the wife's PK380). I have seen a lot of doubts about this holster, and wanted to share my experiences so far. I have been using this holster for only 10 days, but on last Saturday put it through a serious test. I assisted a friend in moving a couple of deer stands and clearing some shooting lanes for his cross-bow. I decided that I would use the Remora to see how well it would work under serious conditions. We were in the woods for almost 8 hours in 85+ degree heat. I had to climb a couple of trees to cut limbs and hiked up some hills (east TN). My Glock (which had a G19 Magazine in it) did not move even when climbing the tree. Normally I would have removed my gun before climbing, but instead just removed the bullet from the chamber and took off up the tree. Anyway I like the Remora, and for $30 shipped it is well worth the price. I expect to hear some comments on the fact that this holster only belongs in a pocket, but I will heartily disagree. I plan to purchase a extra mag holder and another holster. The only thing that I am going to do differently is buy the ART style for a bit better grip when drawing the Glock.
18. I look for a hunting partner who enjoys the woods. I do mostly turkey hunting in TN, and go to MS to deer hunt. That said in the past two years I have called in more turkeys for others than I have killed. I am only in my mid-twenties, but enjoy helping others get thier animal. I sometimes do hunt for just horns, but mostly will ask whoever's land I am hunting on what they want shot off of it. If someone has a herd problem and just want does killed, fine by me. But if I have meat stored (and I normally do) then I will let them pass. Anyway, you have to find someone that you can respect as a hunter and will respect you in turn. P.S. if anyone knows of any clubs or good hunting land around the Knox/Sevier County area I would love a heads up about it. Thanks.
19. I like the Lacrosse Alpha Lite boots, but I do a lot of walking when hunting (mostly Turkey hunting). When I do serious cold weather hunting I try to cut down on the hike in and use a good heavy weight sock to make up for the cold. I have only used the pair I currently have for 4 years, but they are still going strong. The boot is also thick enough that I haven't torn it when crossing fences; that and the fact that they are lightweight made it a no brainer for me. (I also have got three other avid hunters to make the switch to them.)
20. I don't camp or hike with a pack, but a smartcarry or thunderwear might work in that situation. They can be adjusted to carry at diffferent positions (sometimes I use it as a strong side IWB). I know that it is not the quickest, but it works.
21. Hello TGO. I have been spying out this forum for a while and decided to join. I recently moved to East TN from South Mississippi and am enjoying it. I enjoy shooting and have now have my wife shooting regularly (buying a pink PK380 helped). I am an avid hunter and am always open to finding new places to hunt. Look forward to talking on some topics with all of y'all.
