  1. Actually I don't like an external safety at all. My USP is a variant 3 with de-cocker but no safety. That's one thing right about Glocks. I've run through a bunch of guns including Glocks and SIGs. I ended up with a USP 40 for open/OWB carry and a P7M8 for IWB. But my choice may not fit you. If I had kept the G23 as a carry gun, I would have gone to a New York trigger. My "perfect" carry gun has a de-cocker and re-cocker (a hammer works fine) and can be fired SA or DA, or it is a DAO with very good trigger action. I am excruciatingly well trained and even do some training of LEOs for special operations. With the training, I think Glock is acceptable, but USPs are better as are SIGs. Taurus 24/7s are fine if you insist on a 45 ACP (I don't). If you wear a suit coat, you can get by with a lot of stuff. As long as a Glock is in the holster or pointed where you intend to fire, I have no problem with them. They do exactly what they are supposed to do. The problem comes when you draw from or replace it in the holster. A good handgun should help you compensate for those occasional slips of mind that are inevitable. People who tell you that doesn't happen to them are either forgetful or untruthful. Glocks just have little safety factor. Carry by the public should be with a gun handgun that is always ready to fire but doesn't go off "too" easily.
  2. I don't want to make this a big deal, since as a bunch of you know, I don't like Glocks except as duty weapons. But I have carried them before switching to handguns I prefer. To me, the winner of the Glock handguns for carry use is the G23. Reasonable size and power. It can be very accurate with a bit of practice. As I've I think I've mentioned, we have shot them regularly at 100 yards and they actually functioned quite well. None of the Glocks are small (flat) enough to be comfortable and safe enough for concealed carry IWB in my opinion. I know...you disagree. OWB under a coat or open carry work OK with proper training and a good holster. The G26 and G27 in my experience cost some accuracy as opposed the the full and compact sizes. That isn't as important for protection use at 7 to 12 feet, but makes practice a bit less fun. So, the answer is that I wouldn't buy a Glock, but if I did it wouldn't be the G27. It's not a horrible choice. I just think there are better ones.
  3. I'll add my vote for the vertical shoulder holsters. I've had verts forever. A friend loaned me his expensive whatever brand of horizontal. I find I like to get my carry weapon ready if things get tense. I was concerned the handgun would come out of the holster too easily if I released the thumb break. I bought another shoulder holster after the trial of the friend's rig. I bought another vertical. I'd suggest trying both and see which you like best. As far as belts and suspenders, I still have most of my build in the right place. A bit of slippage of my chest into my midriff, but not bad. Belts still work for me, but both a belt and suspenders is not uncommon. Don't hesitate to use both if necessary.
  4. Here's one site about the technique: http://www.pointshooting.com/ As they point out, the idea goes back about a century. I find that it works well.
  5. Is this point shooting?
  6. Yes, but the recipient has to be a manufacturer of firearms or, bona fide dealer, including such articles for repairs or replacement of parts. You can't ship even in state by USPS directly to the buyer. At least that's how I read Title 18, Chapter 83 in the green book.
  7. I haven't been able to get hold of my ATF people in Bristol or Richmond, but it looks OK to ship instate. If it's a pistol, it can't go in the mail except under certain circumstances. Looks like UPS is OK for any firearm but you have to not mark the box and let them know there is a firearm in it. Also must be sent from the hub. This might be a problem for those of us around Bristol. The hub is in Virginia. I think UPS and FedEx require next day delivery. Not sure about that. I checked US Code, the ATF FAQ quoted above http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b and my green book. Can't see anything preventing shipping intrastate even it it's a transfer. Write to me from prison if I'm wrong.
  8. I'm checking on this, but word I'm getting back is that this may only apply to shipping where there is no transfer of ownership.
  9. That might be an unfortunate choice of words considering the Tommy Burks matter.... Please NO!
  10. Yeah, we went through a big discussion over on the other board about which is better. The gamers seem to like Teamspeak, although as I recall it uses more resources. I remember that Vent was a bit funky to get the settings right, but it worked OK after you figured it out. Again, I'll defer to someone else who knows more than I do.
  11. Yeah, we tried Ventrilo. It actually worked pretty well, even for dial-up. I talked to a number of people on it. But it was a constant hassle trying to get someone to reinstalled it after system crashes and whatnot. I don't think the commitment was ever there to make it work. I used to run a chat room over on GEnie back in the old days before the Web. You have to set up a time that is reasonable for everyone to meet. After a while, having to be a moderator at a set time gets to be a hassle. You need enough people to rotate the moderator position or it gets old in a hurry. I guess one of the IMs would work. Someone else should take the lead on that besides me. I don't use an IM right now. Looked into it a few months ago and decided to pass. But if there is one with sufficient security built in, I'd be willing to give it a try. I downloaded Trillian Pro 4.0 the other day. It provides a chat client for AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo Messenger. I think it has a few limitations with AIM but supports stuff like audio chat, file transfers, group chats and chat rooms. Again, I'm not up to speed on this area, so someone else would have to make a suggestion.
  12. Well, I might get offended if this turns into PDO where we rate offensiveness of posts.
  13. What's underwear?
  14. I have to agree that I wouldn't choose an AR for home defense. After a few years of thought and some practice with the idea, I'm really not big on using shotguns for that purpose either. I have a nice Mossberg 500A that is set up for that, but the stock and barrel gets regularly changed to a more friendly hunting mode. I find that something more maneuverable than a shotgun suits me better, but it's a personal choice. I like pistols and hand-held tac lights, but I wouldn't ridicule someone who prefers a shotgun in a more open space. One thing I do like about a shotgun is that racking sound. That will frighten away a lot of amateur burglars. But so would a tape recording of that sound. I know the guy who makes the AA12 fully automatic shotgun. Now that would be a protection weapon. As far as building an AR, check out AR15.com. They have a whole forum on home building. This isn't rocket science, just a fairly simple assembly project with room for some nice tweaking to suit your preferences.
  15. For most people, it takes a while to get over being self-conscious about packing. That feeling goes away and confidence takes its place over a period of time. Now, I wouldn't feel right without a handgun handy for protection.
  16. Yeah, Naifeh is the problem. Even when he is in the minority he uses his power to prevent bills from coming to vote if he doesn't personally like them. If you have a Democrat legislator representing you, you need to put pressure on him to rein in the Speaker. The Senate usually isn't a problem. My Senator is Lt. Gov. Ramsey. His office is about three miles from my home. He's very pro-gun.
  17. If you are fairly good at putting things together, I don't see any reason you can't build it yourself. Have to watch stuff like headspacing, but with a little research most people can build one.

    TN HB 2225

Very true, Len. I'm from a Republican part of the state, but local politics is nice to the Democrats too. The rest of my family is/was from Georgia going back to the Civil War. They largely voted as a Reconstruction Democrat until just recently when there has been a shift to the Republicans. With the Republicans also becoming a party of big government, there isn't much difference between the parties these days. Unfortunately your party's national leadership seems rather decisively anti-gun while the Republicans are only moderately anti-gun.... I'm a believer that government which governs least is best. That puts me in a distinct minority. Everyone wants their "entitlements." I think you are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That's about it.
  19. The only thing I hand load with any regularity is 308 Win for my Remington 700 VS. By playing with the loads, I can significantly improve accuracy over any commercial loads. It's my accuracy toy.

    TN HB 2225

Wish you could convince the rest of your party of that.
  21. Except for a little stuff in the Wildlife Management area, Tennessee gun code is pretty concise. It's all contained in Tennessee Code/Title 39 Criminal Offenses/Chapter 17 Offenses Against Public Health, Safety and Welfare/Part 13 -Weapons I keep a copy of the code on my computer that I copied from the TCA website at http://www.packing.org/leave/?redir=http%3A%2F%2F198.187.128.12%2Ftennessee%2Flpext.dll%3Ff%3Dtemplates%26fn%3Dfs-main.htm%262.0 You just check the proper section in the left pane of LexisNexis, then click download in the right pane and follow the instructions. You can then save the page in IE or Firefox. Makes a handy reference. But it would be handy to have it here too. I think the forum with pending legislation is a very important feature for us. Unlike the banning database, it should be easy to institute.
  22. I'd contact Mike Murray Mcm1718@yahoo.com, or Terry Dixon oldgrunt@charter.net at Unaka Rod & Gun and see if they know of anyone. They teach the courses for handgun permits and hunter safety and might know who in our area teaches the other stuff. Terry is a retired Marine who knows how to stay in a fight rather than hide but I don't think he teaches the stuff you want.
  23. I think Zumbo did what liberals do. He believed in what he wrote, rather than think it out to its logical consequences. I think he was tired and didn't think out his blog. OTOH, I suspect that what he wrote is exactly how he feels about "assault weapons." This may be his first time to write it, but I'll bet his acquaintances and friends have know his view for a long time. He sees them as only good for shooting people. Even if that was true, that doesn't make them a terrorist weapon. Guns that kill people can also be used to protect people. Self protection is a perfectly legitimate use for a gun, whether a pistol or an AR. And a mean looking rifle can be used to take game, whether the hunting snobs like them or not.
  24. It may not mater to you, but Kahr Arms is a Unification Church (Moonies) operation. Officially, it is owned by Sun Myung Moon's son Kook Jin "Justin" Moon. That matters to me.
  25. I agree too. I also don't vacation where I can't carry my gun. If they hate guns and are stupid enough to ban them, they can do without my money.
