  1. Never cared much for Elvis. Hey, I feel for you man.... Mostly kidding Saints, but we do see an awful lot of people elected from that gun-unfriendly party from that region of the state.
  2. When you go past the I-81 exit on I-40 at mile 421, I'm up I-81 70 miles. Like I say, about 500 miles from you. And no offense, but there is little around Memphis to make me vacation there. I try to stay away from criminals and liberals as much as possible.
  3. How about setting up a forum for pending gun legislation with a topic for each Tennessee and Federal bill? We could easily keep up on what's happening in the legal world and who votes for and against us.
  4. Wish I was about 500 miles closer.
  5. Hi Saints. Guess I should welcome you too. I still like you, even if you have turned in your Beretta for one of those Glock things.
  6. Thank you Len. Saved me a bunch of typing. We can't expect the cops to babysit every person who gets a protective order. No way we could afford that many LEOs even if it was desirable to do so. The protective order acts like the laws that add another charge if you use a gun while robbing someone. Just as the police have no responsibility to individually guard every convenience store to keep it from getting robbed, they also have no responsibility to individually guard each person holding a protective restraining order. I don't consider this a liberal decision, but instead a very conservative one. This country was founded on the idea that you protect yourself. If you won't do that, it's your fault. Expecting the rest of society to protect you is a liberal idea, not a conservative one.
  7. WV is a bit odd - as we all know. The weapons laws there do not address open carry, only concealed carry of handguns. It's under their state statutes 61-7-1. Yes, as I read it you may open carry in your vehicle or on the street. But I wouldn't advise it on the street and you will get hassled by LE even if it is spotted in your car. They really want it unloaded and boxed unless you have a permit. We need to build a fire under Tennessee to get a reciprocity agreement.
  8. Just don't wait too long to decide. Why not submit your application now. If you get the job offer, you can decide then. If they don't make an offer, you won't spend your life wondering if you should have applied.
  9. Don Hume is an odd company. Mostly women, I think, who apparently don't know a lot about guns. For at least a couple of years, they said they had holsters for the Kel-Tec P-32 but not the P-3AT. Now they indicate they don't have the IWB model I use for the Gen 2 P-3AT. Duh! If you order through a dealer, they don't do partial shipments. So, if they have 14 out of 15 holsters in stock, they hold the order until they make the 15th to complete the order. But dealers - if you can find one - get a good discount and should give you a better price than buying directly. So, if you can find another holster for a similar size gun with the controls pretty much in the same place, that fits well you can probably go with that. I doubt that calling Don Hume will get you the info you need. Matter of fact my P7M8 and P-3AT share the same IWB holster (at different times of course). Having said all that nasty stuff about them, all my leather holsters are Don Hume. They work well, hold up well and don't cost you your left nut to pay for them. They may not be de rigueur in gun holster snob circles, but I have mine to work with, not brag about.

    S&W 1911

The S&W caving happened when they were owned by the British. Now that they are back in American hands, I can forgive them. What I have a problem with is the New Jersey SW99 (I think it was the 99) scandal that led to an officer's death when the gun jammed. NJ quickly canceled the contract and got rid of the guns. Guess that isn't fair to the other S&W pistols but if that's their design and QC, I'm a little nervous about them.
  12. Wow, that's a deal if all they pay is $20! BTW, I like that you quote Karl von Clausewitz on the site. My favorite of the seven classics on strategy and tactics.

    S&W 1911

Yeah, that looks nice. I've never shot a Charles Daly, but have a very gun knowledgeable friend who makes custom 1911 gun grips for a living who loves them. One thing we all did was change the grips to Pachmayr 1911 Rosewood Grips with Decelerator Rubber as shown in this link. It's not on a Rock Island, but you can get the idea. For some reason, I can't get it to come up as an image on this post, although it works as an image link on my other home gun board. http://image.sportsmansguide.com/dimage/55613m2_ts.JPG?cell=320,320&cvt=jpeg
  14. My wife runs Firefox while I'm still on IE7. Micro$oft did a big IE7 security update within the past week. I can't tell you if it has significant problems. So far, it works for me. Like every MS application, it has constant security upgrades. I don't visit many sites that are likely to cause a problem. If you are into hacker sites all day long, you probably want all the security you can get - and maybe a separate non-LANed computer to browse and download with. I do know Firefox had a security hoax that wasn't real. I hear there are some sites that do not work well with Firefox. You might want to leave IE on the computer too for a while. My concern is a bunch of BHOs I run. I'll have to fully check out all of them before I switch over. But the list of Firefox add-ons is extensive.
  15. Some reviews like AVG. Some like Avast. I found one that likes Avira. Generally, Avast and AVG are pretty equal with perhaps a slight edge for Avast. The worst thing I can say about Avast is that it's scanning interface is a bit clunky but not difficult if you read the help that pops up. In normal day to day use, it's invisible unless it alerts you to some problem. I'd suggest trying both AVG and Avast and see which you like better. That's what I did.
  16. Hello Johnny Reb. Lots of Forrest fans over our way too.
  17. I'm doing the ones with any banning signs, legal or not. I do think the database should indicate which are legal and which are not. Basically I'm considering any of them with any sign as being anti-gun and places to not do business with.

    S&W 1911

I know this is going to sound stupid from a guy who buys Wilson Combat 1911s and who carries H&Ks, but I have a suggestion if you insist on carrying a 1911 (I wouldn't). Rock Island makes a very reasonably priced 1911 in Commander size. I've owned one and several of my LE friends have bought them just to plink around with. We found them surprisingly accurate and reliable. One of my buddies and I like to do pistol practice at targets 100 yards away. We did very well with the Rock Island, especially considering the bullet drop in 45 ACP. They are not super-customizable. A lot of standard 1911 parts won't fit, so you are pretty much stuck with what comes on the gun. It might not give you any bragging rights, but it is fine as a carry gun in a 1911 style, and if you left it in the car and it got stolen, you wouldn't cry too much.
  19. I'm mostly doing Bristol and Blountville right now, but did get Mahoney's in JC the other day. Can't believe they did that. Of course the sign isn't "legal". If you want to handle Johnson City, that will be fine with me. No need to duplicate the labor.
  20. For 9mm, I should have said Hydras in an urban setting (IWB) and FMJ in the field. Oh yeah, about gelatin testing. I'm not one of those who poo-poos the testing technique. It does seem to produce good comparative data. However, you can't count on only hitting soft tissue. Have to factor that in.
  21. The 380 Auto has relatively light bullets with less mass compared to say 9mm and velocity is a couple of hundred fps less than the 9mm. The first round is potentially a "warning". But I really think you need the additional penetration of a FMJ in the .380. That is definitely true in the 32 Auto. I have a nice video around here somewhere that shows the results of an execution style killing using a .32. The first round to the side of the head did not penetrate the cranial vault. The second round, through the eye, did. In most cases, I wouldn't wait to see if the first round stopped them, but it gives me that potentially less lethal option. It's a matter of situational awareness and sizing up your opponent, his actions and your options after that first shot.
  22. After years of using Norton, I finally had enough. So I just went through a big search for both a new firewall and antivirus program. AVG is fine, but I finally settled on !avast. http://www.avast.com/index.html. It sets up easily and updates the virus definitions several times a day. Integrates well with email, etc. Did I mention it's also free? BTW, Comodo http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ended up as the firewall. It sets up well, has a perfect record on port leaks according to http://www.grc.com. And it is also free. The behavior is much like Norton Firewall without the huge overhead. It's fast.
  23. For any of you who haven't seen it, http://www.theboxotruth.com/ has a lot of real-world information. Oh yeah: .40 - Rangers 9mm - Hydras .380 - one Hydra in the pipe and the rest FMJs
  24. Not so far. But I keep hoping they will. I'd like to have a card to give them with the url of the database.
  25. I like Sierra, but there is a lot of information online. One of the local gun clubs has info. Check out http://www.unakarodandgun.com/gun_links.htm and http://www.unakarodandgun.com/reloadpdf.htm.
