  1. I was kidding about the door penetration. I believe in most every instance the 'through door shoot' will be a one way ticket to a place where someone might think you have a 'nice mouth'. I live on the edge of Ftn. City near Whittle Springs School so I do have a larger scumbag/redneck/idiot population than I would like but otherwise a generally quiet neighborhood. An incident like the one I described happens maybe twice a year (a smash grab from a car, etc.) so I do not have a desire to leave the area. I am really just interested to know WTH the guy's plan was (casing for robbery, home invasion, random idiot, suicide by me or my neighbor). Guess if he shows up again I will ask him his what his real motives are. I'm sure he'll accommodate me with an answer
  2. I don't open my door anymore after dark unless I know who is out there. My only concern now is what brand/weight etc. of 9mm ammunition will I need to penetrate my front door AND the guy on the other side (tall order I know). The same guy visited one of my neighbor's house last night just before he came to my home. They did not respond to the knocking quickly enough for him to stay and then he sidled over to my place. I guess we're gonna end up with a bloodbath on my street because there are a number of concerned gun-toters around here. I believe the gent was casing for an easy mark and hope he now has the message that there are none.
  3. After he walked off, I did a walk around/window peak throughout the house and saw a police cruiser slow rolling down our street in the direction the guy went so I did not make the call. However, I probably should have called anyway to get the incident documented.
  4. I went to bed last night about 12am and my wife stayed up to watch some TV. At approximately 1:30 she came into our bedroom and woke me up because a man was knocking at our front door. As I got out of bed she told me that I "better bring the pistol" which I was already reaching for. When I arrived at our front door I peeped out the small window and saw a guy in his early to mid-twenties who said he was a neighbor and needed to use my telephone. I did not recognize him, of course, so I asked him if he was crazy and asked him to leave (all of this through the door). He answered by saying "I ain't tryin' to get shot or nothin'." My response was "That's what's about to happen!" I told him to beat it again and he moved on down our street. Something very similiar to this happened several months ago only the fellow wanted a "ride" to his ill mother across town. I am just wondering if this is a new scheme the degenerates are using to gain entry to a home or if this merely the first step/s in casing a residence. Any thoughts?
  5. It has now been ~11 years since I did my sniper work in the 82nd so I am not 'up' on the newer military sniper gear, but I would take the M24 (Rem 700 .308) for any precision shooting out to 800m. As others have mentioned, at any distance beyond ~300m wind and weather will prove more important for making one's shots. Ideally one would spend a great deal of range time working on both range estimation and reading wind. These skills are much more difficult to master hence the more experienced sniper normally served as spotter in my platoon. As far as accouterments, I would NOT go with greater than a 10x scope as the higher power makes 100m shots more difficult. I would want a mil-dot reticle on the scope (not sure how easily these are acquired in the civilian world) and a sturdy bipod. A free floating heavy barrel would be the final touch. Whatever you finally get, good shooting and practice, practice, practice.
  6. Go to the Health Department on Dameron Ave. off of N. Central St. near the National Cemetery Assuming you are still in Knoxville
  7. I purchased 2 Beltman 1.5 inch belts nearly a year ago (Black and Brown). They have worked perfectly for me whether IWB with a CTAC or OWB with a Comp Tac FBI paddle. They are expensive but should last for years. Excellent choice if you need a dressier appearance that provides real strength.
  8. I have considered purchasing a revolver for pocket carry for sometime and I believe the Taurus 651 in .357 fits the bill nicely. I have not handled one of these yet but have researched these, Charter Arms, and S&W on the web and in several forums. The S&Ws are too pricey for me and i like the "look" of the Taurus line (again not 'in the real' except for Phantom6's pocket BUG). Anyone have some good comments for a cherry wheel gunner?
  9. Unless something else took place that we are not aware of, I believe this case will not stand up. At least I hope so....
  10. Dateline: Wednesday August 15 2007 As I sat in my living room recovering from a hot a sticky jaunt about town, I spied a visitor through the windows crossing my porch to arrive at the main entry of my domicile. As my doorbell is of the 'non-functioning' type, I slowly rose and walked to the door to preempt the inevitable knocking. Upon opening my door I was immediately faced with a sales pitch to purchase some 'Pumpers' cleaning product from a gentleman claiming to hale from Memphis. I stepped forward into the gap made by my now opened screen door and investigated the information sheet provided by the salesman. I commented that I had heard of the product and that I had no interest in purchasing. The salesman retrieved the flier and quickly exited my property after thanking me for my time. As I moved back toward my favorite chair I thought to myself 'He did not even attempt a secondary pitch'. I returned to my seat and realized that I failed to replace the shirt I removed upon returning home and looked down at the XD9sc sitting on my right side in my favorite Comp Tac FBI cant Kydex paddle holster. Hmmmm... Yet another reason to exercise our 2A rights.... avoidance of annoying door-to-door salesmen. (Now, maybe I will not have to keep reading the 'have not posted on our forums in several weeks' message)
  11. Bigboost, It is full service but I had to get the fingerprinting done at another location. If you can get the prints done at Center Park, that will save you a trip elsewhere and should shave a few days off the process.
  12. BigBoost, The DMV at the Strawplains exit (exit 398 on I40) is super nice. I filled out/submitted my HCP application there on a Friday and the total time in and out was around 30 minutes. I got there around 3pm.
  13. Though I have no plans on purchasing using an FFL transfer I thought it prudent to check out local shops who do it (the old never say never thought process). Always good to know all of your options. Adding all of these fees together it seems that (in most cases) a strictly local purchase is the way to go...
  14. I looked for shops in the Knoxville area that do transfers about a week ago and most ranged from $20-35 with the $10 background check; however, some charged sales tax for the transferred weapon. I wonder how they might justify charging TN State sales tax on the purchase? Does the shop have to 'purchase' then 're-sell' the weapon? This may prove too off topic.

    Death Penalty

I used to believe firmly in the death penalty as a PUNISHMENT. Now I am of the opinion that we can do away with captal punishment if we implement a system wherein manadatory sentencing, including life imprisonment, were strictly adhered to. Some version of Phantom's system would suit me just fine, though Cool Hand Luke did seem to have quite a lot of fun. The only valid reason I can find for execution is to INSURE WITH NO DOUBT that that murderer, rapist, kidnapper, or child molestor never repeats their heinous crime. Life imprisonment could also accomplish this so now I am less adamant about the death penalty.
  16. On Non-Fiscal Issues, you rank as a Centrist (59). On Fiscal Issues, you rank as a Strong Conservative (86). If Libertarians were more hawkish on defense of our homeland and less worried about 'doing drugs' I would probably become one. As it stands, I mostly fall under the Republican flag though I would like to think of myself as a Jeffersonian Republican. Have you seen this political test on Boortz's site? http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html
  17. Let me know if this is considered a hijack but this appears germane to the present discussion. I have seen several people on this and other forums write something to this effect: "When I open carry no one pays any mind to me because: I look like I should have a gun/could be a LEO/dress professionally and a few other similar reasons. Does everyone here believe that an 'appropriate' appearance is something a HCP holder should consciously cultivate?
  18. I have the XS Big Dot sights and really like them. I have no experience with other night sights but I like the 'normal' appearance of the Big Dot sights and would not consider them true night sights.
  19. Thanks Reef....must have found the same PDF at nearly the same time..
  20. Hey all I hunted around and found an online manual for the P345. Should answer all of my questions.
  21. My brother-in-law picked up a Ruger P345 and asked me whether they had a de-cocking mechanism. I checked it out and after cocking the pistol (unloaded) I moved the safety lever from fire to safe and the hammer fell but harder than I expected it to. For those that have experience with this pistol: Does this actually serve, by design, to de-cock the pistol? Thanks
  22. You misunderstand my point. Judge texts however you desire but use decorum and civility when attacking the bases of another's beliefs. As an example, I have strong opinions regarding Mormonism, their holy text, and the establishment of the Mormon religion, but I would not launch my own polemic against these very dear religious issues in a discussion only tangentially related to the topic. Right or wrong you get no where by taking your approach in this venue. Personally, I am not offended by your obvious contempt for the New Testament and those that rely upon it to formulate their religious/spiritual views. We are not dealing with academic arguments in a systematic, scholarly way on this forum. I am bothered by your delivery and lack of concern for other's deeply held beliefs. I am equally disturbed over the reciprocal attacks lodged upon you based upon assumptions about your religious beliefs.
  23. Since it is obvious this thread has gone far afield from where it began this will be my last post here. Islam has changed significantly over its history. During what we term in the West as the Middle Ages 1000-1500 or there about, the Islamic Empires (the Ottoman Empire and Moorish Spain in particular) far outstripped Europe as far as toleration, philosophy, medicine, and science were concerned. The rediscovery by Europe of the ancient treatises on medicine, mathematics, and science came by way of interactions with Muslim and Jewish scholars primarily located in Moorish Spain. After acknowledging this we must also note that with the advent of the 17th century, the Islamic portions of the Mediterranean World began a steady decline, politically, militarily, philosophically, etc. These facts make the desires of the Mullahs all the more disturbing. Instead of desiring a return to the high-point of Islamic civilization (14th-16th centuries) they instead desire to return to the 7th and 8th centuries, the years of the great Muslim conquests in the Mediterranean. I will not address the whole sale persecution and slaughter of Jews practiced over the last 1500 years in Europe because if people choose to deny the overwhelming evidence already established within this thread then no additional evidence will sway them. I will assert once again that attacking a person's religion on any plane other than personal beliefs espoused by the person limits and belittles any argument we might make. Attacking the canonical texts is a losing proposition no matter what rhetorical methods one uses. Finally to answer questions posed to me by Rabbi: I never joke concerning religion nor do I EVER belittle another's beliefs or describe their holy texts as polemics or disparage them in any other way. There is no reason that I can conceive to stoop to such methods and to do so says much about the detractor. Discussions of politics, religion, philosophy, and apparently illegal immigration lead to the worst side of all of those involved so from now forward I shall err on the side of civility when dealing with these subjects on this forum. I apologize for any offense I may have given anyone.
