  1. Yeah, I talked to someone that lives in the area that said I didn't miss anything. Sounds about usual though, I haven't been to any auction, yard sale, or even hardly any pawn shops in this area in years that really had much of a deal on anything. Biggest reason for myself going would have been to try to get in on buying some ammo, but I'm sure that followed suit with the high prices.
  2. I apologize Gun Geek, but I wasn't able to make it to this. I had to make a road trip last night and didn't get back home until about 4 this morning. I wish I could have made it to this one because with it being opening weekend of bow season, and also raining, if they still were able to hold the auction I'm betting alot of the firearms sold worth the money. Hopefully someone will post up how things went, or if they cancelled it because of all the rain we're getting this morning.
  3. Not really trying to argue, as I do agree with some of your points. Things may be different now than they were when I was hanging around with LEO's all the time, but most of them I knew back then carried a backup that was concealed. Their standard side arm is openly carried as it is in fact easier for them to get to, but this is mainly because their job is to intentionally put themselves in danger and need the ability on a regular basis to be ready for anything. Their concealed backup is there for a different kind of tactical advantage in that if their standard side arm should be taken away they have the chance to use the one they have hidden from the criminal. Most of the same bunch also carried concealed when they were off duty. Not sure if the LEO's are even allowed to do all of this anymore though as I haven't been around too many of them in a few years. Point to all that being that there are tactical advantages to both forms of carrying depending on the situation, but most non-LEO HCP folks don't intentionally go into a situation where they know at any minute the person they are about to talk to could attempt to harm them. I also see both sides of the fence on the political issues mentioned in this thread. The folks that get nervous when they see someone open carrying could easily end up causing us all to lose that privilege in the future. I see that if everyone openly carried then the general population might calm down some on the issue, but I'm not really willing to take the chance on losing our right to do so in order to try to calm the general population down on the issue. The main reason I am glad we have the right to OC in the first place is that I don't have to worry as much about the brandishing laws that I've heard about in other places should I happen to reach for my wallet and someone sees that I'm carrying. Just throwing my personal opinions out there, though as right now they mean nothing since I wont have my HCP until the end of the year. Great thread though on these subjects.
  4. I heard this auction was coming up the other day, but I had heard it was in the middle of the week this week so I thought I had missed it. I know exactly where it is, I'm thinkin it's the same guy that has regular yard sales with firearms stuff. Still not sure if the g/f will let me go or not since we have so much going on this weekend, but I'm gonna try my best to get there. Gun Geek if the Rugers sell worth the money, I will try to pick one up for ya. I'm gonna be in your area Wednesday through Saturday of next week. That all of course depends on if the g/f gives me permission. I'm kinda on probation with her after I was suppose to sell one of my bikes for vacation spending money last week and ended up trading for more guns instead....
  5. I got a bad batch of the Federals just a couple of weeks ago, kinda wish I woulda seen this thread sooner. Same story, bang, bang, phfffft. I was beginning to think it was my 10/22 that was the problem even though I regularly clean it every time it gets fired. I also had a couple misfires with other brands, but this box of Federals had more problems than I've ever seen. Went through the gun, new firing pin and checked/cleaned everything, and it still didn't change a thing. Switched to the Remington 550 bulk packs and haven't had one single misfire or any other issues.
  6. I use to think a box or two of each caliber was plenty, up until I bought my first AR and started doing alot more target shooting. Heck, one box wont even fill up a 30 round AR mag, and if you have more than one then you're definately gonna be short. Even doing some target shooting with a .22lr you will eat though 200+ rounds before you know it and end up looking around trying to find a deal on some again. Nowadays my personal comfort level is know I have at least 500 to 1000 rounds of each caliber. Maybe a little bit less for shotguns, but with them you also have to throw in a variety of different shells. Just take a look at all the people you live close to, and know that any given morning you may wake up to find out they are all zombies, and think of how many you'll have to shoot in the head before you can get to a store that has more ammo.
  7. For years it's been the good ol Remington 700bdl in .270. This year I may try out the Ruger M77 Mark II in .280 Rem, but it's a little brighter than what I like to take to the woods with me.
  8. Looking at the times I was thinking he musta ate the hogs...
  9. I'm in about the same boat, but this year I've finally got some land to hunt on I think. I use to hunt, especially bow hunting, just about every day of the season. Life kinda led me in a different direction the last few years and after losing 2 hunting places I quit it all for a long time. I have to wait for gun season this year because of a vacation trip my girlfriend has been wanting to go on, but come gun season it's game on, and I'll definately have a bow back in my hands by next year. On another note though, I've already been in the woods hunting for the last few weeks. Just cause it's tree rats and not deer doesn't make the love of being in the woods any different.
  10. I've always done this before just for my peace of mind, but have never run into a dealer that seemed to care either way. Always ended up running it through my name.
  11. That's what I've always heard as well in TN, but never really looked it up. Hasn't ever really been an issue with the rifles I normally hunt with, but it's good to know in case I ever want to take the SKS or something else out hunting.
  12. I have about quit hunting for a similar situation. A few years back I was hunting on some land that had a small 1acre field that joined it that someone else owned. The land I was hunting on pretty much circled that little field. When I got to the woods that afternoon I was running a little late, and the poeple in front of me pulled up in the field, so I decided to hunt on the other side of the land to stay away from any noise they were going to make. Got all setup to hunt, and before long it sounded like a war going on. Now, with that being said, had I gotten to the woods on time I would have gone to my usual hunting spot, and the guys that were shooting would have been shooting directly at me. I left and haven't gone hunting since just because there always seems to be something like this no matter where I go. I do agree though that on my own property I will shoot anytime of the year because I do enjoy shooting, but I think one should at least know if they are shooting AT someone or not before they start firing, and have some courtesy if there are people hunting in the area.
  13. I agree with everyone else for the most part. It's hard to go wrong with a 10/22, but they are better if you plan on tinkering with it and buying upgrades. The Marlin 60 can be found for a good price and is a great shooting 22.

  19. I've got one of the little Maverick 88's that was mentioned above, but with a 18" barrel and a pistol grip for home defense. You can usually find those fairly cheap, mine was around $100 used. Didn't want anything much more than that for a gun that spends most of it's time laying under the bed instead of in the safe with the rest of them. It's had several rounds through it without any issues. If you want to get a really good one though, you gotta go with the Remington 870, but get two barrels because there is no way I would want to use my 18" for skeet shooting or hunting of any kind, but then again I wouldn't want to use one of my longer shotguns for home defense.
  20. I'm about in the same boat since I have a Jeep to build that I want to have finished by middle of the year. I do plan on making it to a couple of different gun sales here and there to see what I can find, and I'd also like to find a good AK, and a couple of AR's........maybe M4 or something similar. Just gotta see what the budget looks like. I also need a good SXS 12ga..........I think I need a second job, maybe even a third.
  21. I'm also looking kinda in that area as well, somewhere in Hickman close to Centerville if anyone knows of anything. I'm kinda the opposite though, I'm not too interested in turkey hunting or varmint hunting, but need a new place to get back into deer hunting. I've tried to look into some of the logging company land, but I can't find anything much on any of that, if there even is any left that hasn't already been leased.
  22. Cool to see a thread about this little gun. I picked one up last year, because I my cousin had a ton of 9mm ammo that he didn't want, so he gave it to me, but I didn't have a 9mm of any kind. I've never been much of a fan of 9mm handguns, so I wanted something like the CX4, but I picked up the Hi Point for $150 NIB. I can honestly say, for just sittin around plinking, I love it. Never expected it to be anywhere near as good, or as accurate as what it turned out to be. But the CX4 stock is one upgrade that I'm definately gonna do to it soon.
  23. I was an explorer back when I was under 18 cause I wanted to be a cop. I kinda went the other direction though.

    Mossberg or 870

I hear ya there. I did a bunch of shooting with mine a while back, and noticed later that night that the palm of my hand was blue. I thought I had grease on it or something, but it wouldn't wash off. Heck, I didn't think it was even possible to bruise the palm of your hand, but I did put quite a few rounds through it. I like to have the option of some kinda stock for times when you're gonna shoot alot with it.

    Old shotgun

Looks like the 185D-A was made between 1947-1959. It probably doesn't have a serial # on it since it's that old, and there doesn't seem to be much info on it out there. You can find some of the manuals for it on ebay and gunbroker, and there are also some sites that still have parts for it. They don't seem to be worth a whole lot because there isn't much demand for bolt action shot guns, which is kinda strange since I couldn't find much on them on any auctions, but I wouldn't mind having one. I'd hang on to it, the gun market changes all the time, so it might be worth a ton some day.
