  1. Considering the seat belt check had nothing to do with safety and awareness but revenue generation, it's despicable.

When revenues fall because not enough folks are breaking laws, guv'mint creates new laws to make more law breakers to fine.

Unfortunately, the founders of the states and union decided to set up institutions whose job it was to pass laws. So that's what they do, whether they're needed or not..

  2. Really. If you're worried about someone riding without a helmet increasing your insurance premiums, petition your insurance company to put you in a pool which excludes motorcyclist who don't wear helmets (or even motorcyclists altogether if you'd prefer). It's already what's being done for smokers.

Of course, the idea is to spread risk around a bit but it's only reasonable that riskier activities incur higher premiums (or even cause forgoing insurance completely).

  3. That's what I worry about for you riders - I drive 4000+ miles a month and the stories I could tell would sound like tall tails of the one that got away. Driver's are so isolated and distracted within their vehicles, something "as small as" a motorcycle is not noticed until the last minute or it's too late.

We're well aware of those risks and have the same worries but if you have to ride, you have to ride and you just can't explain it to a non-biker.

I left riding for about 15 years and had frequent weird motorcycle dreams until I picked it up again (which I always knew I would).

So I love posting portable energy solutions, this thing looks pretty awesome. 5W is perfect for most mobile type devices.

    Not cheap, but pretty cool.

I saw one on there about a year ago but they didn't make their numbers. I wonder if it's the same people came back for another go.

    Edit: Apparently not

  5. Pretty much, I was a traffic investigator in a state that did not require helmets. I have worked some pretty gruesome car and motorcycle wrecks that also become ugly court cases. It was also a no-fault state; I can not image the craziness with the way insurance is in TN.

While I believe in freedom, You are utilizing local, state, and federally funded roads. When the police have to detour traffic and spend hours upon hours investigating a wreck that has become serious because of the lack of safety equipment like helmets and seatbelts, it becomes a government interest.

Sure, let's keep on down that road http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/18301/maryland-considering-mandatory-helmets-for-drivers/ :)

  6. Well, first off why would the law not apply to TennCare people?

Increased risk = increased insurance.  If half your brain ends up on the highway then medical costs increase as does what the insurance bastards have to pay out.

If half your brains are on the highway, I think the medical costs will be minimal (though probably not nonexistent)

  7. On the car topic... I do question whether cars would be as safe (and expensive) as they currently are without all the regulations.  My guess is no.

My guess is there's no way to tell but we might be surprised. Government nearly always makes a ham-fisted job of what they're up to.

I wonder if an "under 21" clause would have helped this along. I know everyone's worried about "young Jimmy" and American seems to be constantly infantilizing people so perhaps that would have been enough and allowing that people over 21 are damn sure able to make their own decisions would play better.

  8. Just a suggestion: http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/tn85.html

Heed the warnings though. If you ride your own ride it's a fantastic road. If you don't, you could end up like me, coming over the top of a hill really fast with a 90+ degree turn to the right and looking down at the river below. Thank God for anti-lock brakes is all I can say. :D

"This is not a road for crotch rockets!!!"

Haha, having ridden behind cruiser dudes on The Dragon, I suspect the crotch rockets would have an easier time of it. They're not just about riding WOT.

  9. Would like to see a ride out Natchez Trace way, Williamson Co.

I rode this route for the first time last summer with Jaysan60, nice roads tailored for group rides!

There's quite a nice loop you can do if that's your thing. Natchez->50->48->49->251 (Or finish up a little differently depending on your final destination). 48 south of 100 and 49 are some great riding roads if traffic is light.

  10. I had a near collision over on Old Hickory Blvd headed to Charlotte a few years ago.  THe guy was pretty pissed but HEY, not one hit anyone and poop happens.  He honked and flipped me off and then followed me for a long ways trying to get me to pull over.

Back then, there was a large Police department on that end of Charlotte.  I pulled right in there to see what he wanted.  Funny he didn't feel the need to follow me anymore.

Never, ever put yourself into a position of conflict.  Look like a puss, so what?  ALWAYS actively seek the path of least resistance.

Had very similar happen to me once over something trivial. The thing is, I can understand a honk, and even a little digital communication but once you start pursuing someone, that's stepping over a line (and into some quite dangerous territory).

  11. It's doing OK. Price has been lower, price has been higher. It's been through a lot, plenty of scammers drawn to the fresh money but it's been surprisingly resilient. I like it but I always recommend people do their own research.

  12. I think it's setting up for a big showdown which gets conveniently interrupted by the Wolverines. The Z-virus (or whatever it's called this time) was actually a soviet plan and everywhere west of the Appalachians is under Russian control. Vladimir Putin guest-stars in the season finale.

The battle will be won at great cost to the Alexandrians, maybe one of the show regulars and a hairline scratch to Rick's cheek after which everyone will realize that they need to work together against far worse things "out there" though it's probably "just better" if the regulars move on.
