  1. Being a bit suspicious; a phrase comes to mind here. That phrase is "...spread the wealth around...". I'm a pretty old guy, and been foolin with firearms since the early sixties. I've seen "revolutions in firearms" come and go. With the police and military industry; it's always about doing business with your friends; no matter what the buying agency says. They sometimes "cook the data" to prove a point and steer a contract (....imagine that!...). It has been my experience over the years that folks (...like Kimber, for example...) make real good stuff. That means most everybodys "stuff" is equally good. That causes you (...the interested buyer, contractor or supplier...) to "gilflirt" the data (...all very honestly, of course--complete with testing procedures, charts, diagrams, data, and hardware...) to make something look bad; say reliability with mags known to have problems, using ammo that will hang on anyone's feed ramp, ect -- you get the picture --- to justify your purchase to provide "enhanced reliability (...or whatever else you are seeking to prove...). I simply refuse to believe that one of the two companies (...springfield is the other...) that dethroned Colt (...as much as i love 'em...) makes an "inferior and unreliable pistol". I simply wont buy that notion. I am open to entertaining the thought that a feed ramp may need a bit of polishing or a magazine may need an $8.00 spring kit. I simply refuse to believe that Kimber is a second class vendor. Again, i'm a suspicious man. In the interest of full disclosure; I neither own a Kimber nor a Springfield. I own Colts. But if i was looking for another 1911 type pistol; i would'nt hesitate to buy one. I trust Springfield, Kimber, and Colt far more than i trust polititians, government purchasing agents, and political pals who sell guns; but that's just me. Food for thought. suspicious leroy PS ---Refer to the "Words to think about" section below for more thoughtful opinion on this matter
  2. I love this!!! Keep up the good work! leroy
  3. Glocksters advice here is a good starting place. "Back in the day" we used to shoot lots of 222 and 223 in bolt guns with 1 in 12 twist barrels (...i know that is an oddity today...) 55 grain hpbt (...or spitzer flat base---couldn't tell much difference out to about 200 yds...) bullets (....it dont matter the brand; they are all good...) and a "stiff load" of ball powder. They would all shoot well enough for ya to lay a dime over them at 100 yds with a good scope if you can hold it that close. The 223 aint too finicky as to loading as long as the powder charge is "stiff" or near maximum. I also agree with Glockster's observation RE: stick powders. I could never find much of an improvement over the ball type powders when shooting the 222 or 223. I cant give too much advice on AR type loads, because we just started fooling with them after 30 years or so of making fun of them. "Back in the day", the 1 in 12 twist AR's were a joke to us old bolt gun men. That being said; they aint a joke anymore. I'm working on loads for a 1 in 9 HBAR carbine right now. It already shoots better than i can. Plan to use WW748, Hornady A Max 55 grain spitzer flat base bullets (...they were on sale...) and military brass. Hope this helps leroy
  4. Probably running out of contract work. Hope they can re-start with something that doesnt depend on the whims of government. leroy
  5. Lester passed on a "pearl of wisdom" here with the interchangeable toolheads speech. This solves bunches of problems with fiddling and re-adjusting everything with a caliber change. We do this too: Hope this helps leroy
  6. Interesting read, indeed!! Thanks for posting it. leroy
  7. LINK:____________ Watch and buy the ones on sale. It dont matter, Trijicon, Truglo, Meprolight, XS. On a handlgun they all work the same. I've got both trijicons, champion and meprolight. They all work well. Dont worry about "warranty" issues. What R1000 said about the licensing issue is why there are only one or two "real" suppliers of tritium vials. Somebody (...like Trijicon or Meprolight...) encapsulates the tritium in the little vials, the sight guys just machine the sights and insert the vials. Hope this helps leroy
  8. To add a bit to what Rightwinger says above; i've got a Dillon 650. They (...like the 550...) work very well when you dont keep changing components (....like bullets....). I found my Dillon used (...believe it or not...). Had to rebuild some of the consumable parts (...springs...). They are great for volume pistol loading. I'm sure they work well for rifle calibers; i just never load 'em on the dillon. Have fun. leroy

    S&W or Colt?

This is the answer. My problem is that i like 'em all!!! leroy
  10. Looks to me like you are well armed!!! Have fun and shoot a lot!! leroy

    9mm Texas-style

STI makes good stuff. I'd like to have a full size 38 super myself. Keep up the good work. leroy
  12. What Garufa said above ^^^^^^^. The target wadcutters work like a charm. Good luck leroy
  13. I like it!! Looks like 'ya need to start reloading. That will get the best out of the Grendel. By the way; a 4 by 2 at one hundred yards with iron sights aint bad for a new gun! (...keep holding where you did for the two bottom right shots...)! Keep us posted. leroy
  14. They are great men. Worthy of our respect and praise; with a long, brave military history. Check this British Army link out: Gurkha History - British Army Website. Keep up the good work. leroy
  15. All:_____________ Here is a "real" man's covert carry shirt: Link here: 573.47 / 573.49 Key Hickory Striped Logger Shirt Pullover, Long Sleeve, Folded Pack; Colors- Firm Hand and Garmet washed. Note the size range and the price. I heartily recommend them ---- especially for the "full figured" older guy. It looks lots better than them wimpy jungle print shirts. Very rustic and useful. Rotund leroy
  16. The holsters look good. Be sure and give us a report on it when it comes in. PS --- I liked the "OWB kydex". It looks like "Atomic Dog's" model. Keep up the good work. leroy
  17. This is exactly right. It seems that the Tn State Attorney General said he would not bring a case against the Federal government because Federal Law always trumps State law. That pronouncement has raised lots of hackles in the Tennessee State Legislature. There is a bill being introduced in the state house to set up a state "Solicitor General" who would presumably handle any litigation as the result of state law. My guess is that the current state Attorney General (...i think he is a Democrat; and appointed; not elected [...which i think is a bad idea...]...) is in big trouble over this very issue. Mabee others can clear this up a bit; please jump in with the specifics. leroy
  18. Bingo!!! You hit the nail exactly on the head. The biggest problem "sis" and company may have for the next two years is keeping "em on the job if the congress starts budget cutting. My guess is that they will be unemployed after the 2012 election and that contractors, will, indeed take their place. I see that as a good thing. Keep up the good work. leroy
  19. Dave:_______________ RE: Your question: David posted the best answer. It's ok to like some things (....guns, knives, cars, etc. ...) and not like others. That's why they make all the different ones. I'm one too; and i wont apologize for it. I'm polite; i wont talk bad about anyone else's taste in firearms. Folks can prefer whatever they like. So do i. The fact is, we still live in America and are affluent enough to buy whatever we choose to (....for the time being, anyway...). Dont apologize for having good taste (...and good sense...). Keep up the good work. I say those who call you down for being a "gun snob" are politically correct weenies!! leroy
  20. Glad to hear it!! Don't feel bad; ive had several old time Colt Government Models that had the same problem with colt marked magazines. We used to change the spring if a magazine gave any problems at all. Have fun shooting your new Kimber!! leroy leroy
  21. I like it!! I aint much of an NFL owner or coach; but i like Fisher. Sad to see him go. Young will prove to be more trouble than he is worth in the longrun. leroy
  22. Randy:_______________ You might want to give this guy a call: Colt Single Action Army Revolver- Edward Janis. Name is Ed Janis. He is one of the biggest colt saa parts and repair guys around. Sounds like the base pin and bushing is worn out; possibly the bolt as well. Ed may well have those parts. Hope this helps. leroy
  23. Take due note of Punisher's post here: Words for the newly aggravated semiauto pistol guy to live by. Been said several times by our brothers in the posts above: --- magazine problems cause 90% of "malfunction issues" with semiauto pistols, no matter the caliber. This is a universal truth of the semiautomatic pistol world. Reloads: Gotta have about the same recoil impulse as factory loads. That equals similar ballistics of the reloads as compared to "factory" loads. This is the "recoil spring" problem. Another universal truth of the semiautomatic pistol world. Good luck; you can fix it with a bit of "tweaking"! leroy
  24. mav:________________ Thanks for the neat review and pictures. Congratulations on your new "tool". I like it when Americans continue to arm themselves and take responsibility for their own self protection (...remember, "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away...."! Looks like this one was a great choice. RE: You are experiencing the same thing we did years ago with the old 38 super. Great accuracy, lots of power, and light recoil. I'm terribly tempted to have someone do me a full size light weight carry model 38 super. The super round is a tad longer than the 9mm. Thanks for the great review!! Enjoy! leroy
  25. Daves post above ^^^^ is exactly right. We happen to live in a country that (...for the time being....) has a law called the Second Amendment that started out protecting the right to arms. We also have the fundamental right to self defense and defense of those around us (...for the time being...). All this has been hijacked by polititians, lawyers, and judges of various stripes over the years in an attempt to curb this right or to outright disarm the population. This disarming has succeeded in large part in the large northeastern and midwestern population centers that are overrun with machine polititians, demigogues, those on the dole, and folks that evidently like being treated like serfs and told what to do. As Dave says, you need to decide for yourselves whether you are a serf or not; and whether you want to be controlled by a bunch of statist or not. Remember the old limeric: "...Those who beat their weapons into plowshares with plow for those who dont...". That's exactly what has happened in every totalitarian government in the world. A disarmed populace moves quickly from being citizens to being serfs and slaves. Remember, the state of Tennessee (...along with other states, countys, and muncipalities with the ability to make or controvert law...) is simply easing up on the restrictions to a right that has always been there from a ethical and constitutional perspective. That "easing up" is anything but benelovent. It is simply allowing a right that has already been there. Having said all these unkind things; I'm glad we live in a state like Tennessee where this "easing up" is going on; but I have no illusion that somehow the "light of the Lord" and "rightdoing by polititians" has caused it. While we may temporarily enjoy a majority of those in the statehouse that see things the way that we do; we are always just one election from folks like Jimmy Nafeh and congressman Cohen, who see things quite differently. Right now, the political class is afraid to tighten this stuff up because of the mood of the citizenry. It is possible for them to become more bold as politics and national events change. Remember what happened after the assassinations of JFK and RFK. Like that great Tennesseean Davey Crocket said: "...Keep your powder dry..." and as our great Tennesseean Dave is advocating; "...your weapon at the ready....". If you do that, you will not become a victim or a serf. Food for thought. leroy
