  1. About 5 years ago I bought a M1G  for $800.  3 years ago, took it to my gun club's "clinic" where we had about 25 guys with Garands, my Garand and 5 "experts."  So as things were just getting started, the experts took a walk-around and the guy that came over by me called over his other expert buddies and announced, "Hey guys, I think we may have something here we almost never see...….a genuine WW2 original -----all parts original rifle here"  or words to that effect.  That was a great moment!  That was back in ILLanoy.  If anyone here is a real expert on these and reasonably within driving distance of Maryville I'd be interested in your opinion.

On the ammo, commercial .30-06 hunting ammo is a little  hot for the Garand. It can bend the operating rod. Many ammo makers do make ammo specifically for the Garand. You can also get an adjustable gas plug which will let you shoot the hunting stuff. While not s common as it once was, there's still some mil-surp ammo out there. Often already loaded in en-bloc clips.

Speaking of clips, do you have any? If you need some PM me your address and I'll send you some. ;)

Grayfox54 is SPOT ON with his advice on the ammo and the gas plug.  Don't shoot .30-06 hunting ammo through that Garand (without the plug).  And congrats, you made a good buy.

They say there are two kinds of gun owners.

Those who have had a ND and those who will.

I don't think I believe the logic of that, because I'm guessing 95% of us will never have a ND.  BUT, we all need to PRESUME that we could, and act accordingly.  We can all make mistakes.  Treating all guns as loaded, all the time, is a good start.  If you pay close attention to TV shows and movies, you'll see a lot of cases where some bonzo racks the slide, and then pops the magazine, to unload the gun.  Yeah, right!

  4. There is a lot of over-reaction here about this.  The Governor's proclamation is neutral in terms of any particular religion.  And we have a National Day of Prayer, which is May 2.   Instead of being afraid of people praying, or (God Forbid!) a few state employees spending a very few minutes on this (which is speculation anyway) .........maybe we should focus on actual threats to our God-given rights (such as self defense---anyone want to argue with that?) , and the Second Amendment, instead of getting all worked up about recognizing a day of prayer.  We have days in this country declared for EVERYTHING!   If you're worked up about a day of prayer, oh.........never mind, there's just no getting through to you.

  5. Greg, my advice would be to retire at 50 if you can afford it, if that's what you REALLY want to do.  I would heartily recommend that your next step might be to figure out what you REALLY want to do!  May you have the very best of luck, and the benefit of balance, spirit, and wisdom.

  6. If you just did nothing, wouldn't that just happen naturally anyway?  Is this an especially valuable gun or collection?  And why would you want to name anyone "listed for handling?"   Just askin', trying to learn something here.

  7. Welcome to Tennessee, 4Freedom!  I lived in MN years ago.  Gotta believe Tennessee is more friendly.  TN is certainly waaaaaaaaay better than living in the Peoples Republic of ILLannoy.  Moved here from there a year ago.

Congrats on dealing so well with all the adversity you've had to face.  You're gonna really like things better here.  Stay well, and Keep the Faith!

I'm not an attorney but here's my opinion on unregistered pistols. Any sale or trade in TN should be documented by the gun owners for their own protection. I am not aware of a law that requires handgun owners in TN dealing with TN residents having to register their handgun with any TN law enforcement agency. That said, if the unthinkable would ever happen you will need to prove you obtained the firearm legally.

A lot of folks have a polymer-80 build-a-Glock pistols. If there is not already, there will soon be a requirement to serialize and register the pistol since it did not pass through an FFL dealer.

If the "unthinkable would ever happen" I don't believe you would need to prove you obtained the firearm legally.  I'm sure most of the guns in this country could not satisfy that level of scrutiny.

My guess is he's working a deal and rolling over on everybody he knows connected to his charges. LE wants the big fish.

My advice is to stay as far away from this as you can. Nothing good will come from your curiosity.

The wheels of justice grind slowly.  As stated above, leave this alone.  fugggggeddddddaaaaabbbboudddddittt

I think once you get the 20 incher you won't feel like you settled for anything.

But if you get a Henry 30-30 you'll know you've really got a smooooooth, accurate, and very classy lever action, which will also only increase in value.

Thanks, I guess I should have been more specific.  I'm after the unicorn with the short horn (16 inch barrel) but it's starting to look like I'm going to have to settle for the 20 incher.
