  2. Heh... from a rest would be fine. I have a Les Baer that has a 3" guarantee at 50 yards... sign me up! **BRENT**
  3. What about different classes for different skill levels? Instructor vs. instructor, n00b vs n00b (1000 rounds would come close to DOUBLING what i've put through the two guns I've owned in the past 8 months)... Just a thought... **BRENT**
  4. HeHe... its about time you introduced yourself 'round these here parts... Welcome to the fray, Mrs. Hero Gear! **BRENT**
  5. Welcome from Marion County... I wasn't too far from ya on the other side of Chattanooga up until last weekend, Now I'm down a bit in Jasper. Enjoy! **BRENT**
  6. Welcome aboard, Creeky. I have found that this board has usurped a few others that were on the top of my "Refreshed every few minutes" list of forums, enjoy your stay! **BRENT**
  7. Oh... the cartoon is great... twas not lost on "I". Just workin' up the post count to make me look more legit... <g> **BRENT**
  8. Welcome from a few miles up the road. At least for a couple days. I'm in East Brainered, but til recently was just over the border in East Ridge for almost 5 years... moving back to jasper (about 30 miles from the GA/TN line) on friday, just taking a break from packing. Welcome to the forum! **BRENT**
  9. Disclaimer: I do not own a Glock, nor have I shot one. I do own a 1911, and owned one other previously. I had never shot a pistol at all before I bought my first 1911 back in December. I had, however, held quite a few different types of guns, and the 1911 just felt right to me, ergonomically. The Glocks I held just didn't fit my hand at all. They just feel inherently wrong to me, so +1 for 1911. **BRENT**
  10. Much like Mrs. Hero Gear, my wife enjoys the less traditional colors in her carry pieces. She was raised in a hardcore anti-gun family, so I'm getting her into it slowly, starting with the so called "plastic guns." These are the JA-RU O1 and P1 (Orange One and Purple One)... clever, no? They both carry "pop up" night sights (glow in the dark, ala Tritium)... even her triggers glow... baller. Notice she carries the theme through to her blade. Like me, she is a fan of the combo edge. Enjoy the pic! **BRENT**
  11. Ok man... thx for the reply. **BRENT**
  12. I, like many others, intend to enjoy a good scrap now and again (from a distance, of course)... but I read this thread right after it was posted before any replies came, and then again this afternoon (gotta catch up on all the juicy TGO gossip!), and I noticed all the replies and whatnot. Then I went back to re-read the original post, and saw it had been edited late last night. I was just wondeirng what the original said. I can't remember if something was taken out, added, cleaned up... I don't know... just curious. Well... back to the love fest... <g> **BRENT** P.S. Yes, I use ellipsis too much, so whoever wants to get on me for that, google what it is and then you can get on to me about it. P.P.S. Yes, I know I use it wrong at times, this is on purpose.
  13. I live about 14 minutes from there (as of right now, about to move in a month, will be 50 miles, but not as far as the winchester crew). I have one of the limited memberships there, was waiting on a buddy to join up with me to get the discounted rate, just when that was about to happen, I found out I was going to end up moving 40 miles the other direction, so I just saved my $$$ and pay the 10$ fee the rare occasions I can get out there these days. I'm game, as long as its not the day(s) I'm moving. Think he'll let people bring their own machine guns? <g> Here's a link to the range part of their website, you can find the address for mapping it out by clicking the "home" tab on the top left. Home page has a gunshot sound on it that may be a bit loud, just a heads up http://www.cartershooting.com/range.htm **BRENT**
  14. Back at cha, utarch00... I hope you get STAX and stacks of ammo for this most wonderful of days. **BRENT**
  15. Hey guys, thanks for the info. Dan, I was wondering about the .38 round... we were thinking it COULDN'T have been a .38 Special, and I hadn't heard of .38S&W til just a day or two ago. It might be fun to track down an old box of it (new box wouldn't matter, probably won't be shot). Its in pretty rough shape right now, much of the plating has worn off, and it could use a good cleaning. Neither of us are really worried about the value, just interested in information. Its in interesting little piece, and hope to get it cleaned up at some point. It also has a leather sheath it came with, but no markings. If I get some pictures done, I'll snap some of that too. May be random, may be original, we shall see. Len, thanks for the link. I'll pass this too along to my uncle, I'm sure he would like to get this done. If there's anything else anyone knows before I get the pictures up, it'd be appreciated. Thanks guys. **BRENT**
  16. Hey guys. A few days ago, my uncle entrusted me an old S&W revolver to get some info on. After some research, I figured out it was an old .38 DA Perfected. This was given to him by a family member about 37 years ago. I don't have any pics right now, but much of the nickel plating has worn off, but I was still able to make out some of the markings on it. SN seems to be 154574 or 15457 4, as the last digit seems a bit further out than the others. I'd appreciate any info on this revolver, and especially if there is a SN list that I missed that could date this, it'd be helpful. Thanks guys. **BRENT**
  17. Welcome to the club, Dan. Now there's someone else I can pester with gun questions and "what if's"... it'll give Joe a break <g> **BRENT**
  18. Well SFB, we shall agree to disagree... I see them as being proficient enough, but as far as players, even Grohl (arguably the most talented player instrumentalist), still isn't that great. But don't get me wrong, it doesn't make me enjoy them any less... I just don't find them that great... I wonder if I'll get around to adding to that list... I don't even want to begin to think of who I left out... <g> **BRENT**
  19. Since I've been chatting it up with utarch00 about headphone stuff over in his welcome thread, I thought I'd hop in here too. Someone said 311... such a good band... I don't know if its a guilty pleasure or not, but worthwhile. If anyone watched IDOL this year, you may have seen Blake (the guy who came in second, only b/c a guy won it last year, it was a girl's turn, sigh). Anyways, psuedo-punky lookin' kid with a faux-hawk who beat boxes did a rendition of (I believe) Come Original (one of 311's first mainstream hits)... it was pretty good. Dave Matthews/Dave Matthews Band - I think they've matured beyond their greatness, but their stuff through the 90's was just incredible. I'm a huge fan of Crash and Beyond These Crowded Streets. Also, Dave by himself on Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Luther College just had some amazing recordings. The band consists of a lead singer/guitarist, violinst, saxophonist, a bassist, and a drummer (Carter Beauford... this man is a percussive genius... to be put in the record books along side of Neil Pert from Rush.) This is a jam band who can really bring to a concert what they can bring to the album, maybe more. Fav track: Halloween... there is a story behind it, which makes it great. Clipse - A rap group produced and managed by The Neptunes (Pharell Williams and Chad Hugo, two of the 3 members of a group called N*E*R*D (Not NERD, but it stands for "Noone Ever Really Dies"... I don't know the backstory)) who are some very intersting beat makers. Clipse tends to talk about what they grew up with in VA, selling cocaine. I don't know why I'm drawn to this, but I've been a musician since I was 7, and some of it, ala South Park, is fairly witty/intellectual, once you get past the brashness of it. Edit: Quite a few gun references as well... they dropped Heckler & Koch on their latest album... impressive, no? N*E*R*D - The aforementioned group delayed their debut album In Search Of... for a while after band members decided not to use synthesized instruments, but held off to input actual instrumentalists in place of the machines... something that I can greatly respect, and appreciate. Norah Jones - A fairly talented songstress. Some great songs out there on "Come Away With Me", although recorded a little hot in a few areas, other wise, great. The next two are a little more put-you-to-sleepish, IMO, but not bad. The latest a little more country, if you're into that sort of thing. She sang a duet with Dave Grohl, lead singer of The Foo Figthers and former drummer for Nirvana, on their penultimate-to-date album In Your Honor, disc 2 (the all acoustic album). If memory serves, this was a cover of an older song, a bit playful. The Foo Figthers - Mentioned above, disc 2 of In Your Honor is a well recorded, well done, acoutic disc of a 20 song 2 disc album. These guys are probably remembered from their "Mentos" style commercial back in the mid-90's... Nirvana - The Jimi Hendrix/Janis Joplin/Jim Morrison of my generation (died at 27, left before their time, blah blah blah), Kurdt Cobain led this trio of so-so musicians into a whirling dervish of a scene known lovingly as "Grunge" and/or "Alternative" in the late 80's/early 90's. I was a huge fan of the band back in the day, but feelings have wained in the past years, occasionally rekindled. Bleach was probably my favorite studio album, probably due to its rawness. Their pièce de résistance was thought to be by many Nevermind, but I argue their best recorded work was MTV: Unplugged in New York. Recorded in just one take (Neil Young took 2-3 different sessions before he got what he thought was acceptable), it was a look into what they had become, and where they were going. Cobain did quite a few covers that night, including a couple from the Meat Puppets, one from Bowie, and one from Leonard Cohen. The Meat Puppets stuff was in a range above what was natural for Cobain, lending itself to difficulty, strain, and challenge... bringing quite a bit of depth and heart to the song "Lake of Fire". Krist Novaselic (bassist) had a nice accordian part on "Man Who Sold The World". Loretta Lynn - "Van Lear Rose", which came out in 03 or 04, was just a phenomenal album. Its a testament to what some of the greats of what many proclaim to be "Real Country" artists can do, even late in life. It was produced by Jack White, of The White Stripes, an interesting group in itself. The White Stripes - A two person group, Jack and Meg White (few are sure if they are brother and sister, or formerly married, its in the air still), which does some bare bones rock stuff, with Jack on lead vocals/guitar and Meg on backup vocals/drums. Meg is a crappy drummer, but the band has put together some very interesting music together, and have enjoyed quite a bit of success. I always look forward to hearing new material from these two. Linkin Park - A "Nu Metal" band that hates the term "Nu Metal", which has put out 3 studio albums, and a host of remixes. A singer, a rapper/guitarist, a bassist, another guitarist, a drummer, and a DJ, this band is definately interesting. Few of them are considered to be amazing musicians, but together, they work very well together, and put out some good "guilty pleasure" music, IMO. Tool - I mean... its Tool, come on. Musicians playing music that is a bit different, quite a few diminished chords thrown out there, and some amazing percussive feats. They have lyrics that go over the heads of most MENSAns, they are Heavy metal band that gets a bit political at times. I like much of their earlier stuff, and its almost always recorded INCREDIBLY well. Jurrasic 5 - A hip-hopish group of guys who I just don't really have anything to say about right now, other than it was one of the groups who got me over the rap part of my "I don't like rap and country" spiel. Power In Numbers is what I cut my teeth on. Green Day - Dookie, however unfortunately titled, is still one of the best albums of the genre I've been introduced to. I haven't followed them as much in recent years, but quite the punk band which has been able to strive through the past 15 years or so. Its odd to hear some new bands where "Green Day" is one of their influences... and I'm like... "no... I can't be getting that old... I'm only in my mid 20's... are you seriously... they haven't been around long enough to be 'inspiration' to other people"... I AM getting old. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the masterpiece of this particular group. A bit more on the country side of rock, this ever growing assemblage of musicians has made it a little harder for people to say "I don't like any country" or "I don't like rock at all... FREE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!" Its kind of a hard band to bend into one genre, but you just have to listen to this band, this album. Give it at least two spins, front to back... there is just something about it that is hard for me to encapsulate, so I'll leave it to your ears. Flaming Lips - These guys have been around for years and years, and have had a cult following. You have probably heard some of their stuff on commercials or on the radio from back in the day ("She Don't Use Jelly" off Transmissions From A Satellite Heart probably slid past your ears once or twice, but they have put out some rather esoteric albums, one that I really appreciate is the one just before their latest entitled Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, a story of a young girl who fights to save the world from invasion of, you guessed it, pink robots. A theme album which kinda gets out there a little. If you have a good 5.1 setup in your home, I implore you to pick up the 5.1 recording of this album. Cake - Their cover of "I Will Survive" alone will make you love them. "The Distance" is a classic. Fashion Nugget is their most well known album, and arguably the best. These guys have also had some "commercial" success over the years, and one of the few videos I know of was for their song "Short Skirt, Long Jacket". It had quite a few cuts of people being stopped on the street, given some period Sony Headphones (either 20$ ones, or some MDR-CD780's or 1700's, I can't remember), attatched to a PCDP (portable CD player, I forgot that I'm not on www.head-fi.org right now, I know a couple of you are). It just showed the reactions of the people listening to the then unreleased song. During one part of the song, probably only about 30 seconds in, it actually drops off for 3 seconds or so, garnering stares of puzzlement and "is that it?", only to resume to finish out their possibly unintended tradedmarked short song style. Beach Boys - I grew up listening to the oldies station with my parents... I was lucky enough to be exposed to some older stuff. I love the harmonization of the group, something you are generally restricted to in boy bands these days. Brian Wilson also recently finished up his masterpiece SMiLE. I particularly like the track (and the surrounding tracks, if you've heard it, you'll know what I mean) "Heroes and Villans." I have an original copy of Pet Sounds on vinyl... I need to get a VPI Scout (imagine entry level Baer or Wilson... runs about 1600$, can add more to it and end up with a higher end model, but its amazing right out of the box for the money) and give it a spin. Beatles - What can you say... its "The Beatles". I was introduced to them for my personal collection through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band, an interesting classic. As much as I love SP and the White Album, I have to give the nod to Revolver as my favorite Beatles album... and no, its NOT just because of the forum I'm on. Jamiroquai - Another "across the pond" band, but of a bit different genre, this quasi-techno group has put the exhaust of a Lamborghini Diablo (one of 2 of a special edition, which was wrecked by, if memory serves, a professional BMW driver) on its way to the video shoot... the other 1 was tracked down at the last minute. Traveling Without Moving is the album I'm most familiar with, with the title song, "Cosmic Girl", and a few others which were quite enjoyable. T.a.T.u - Total guilty pleasure band, but "200km/h In The Wrong Direction" was acutally a pretty good album for two russian teenage girls who were put together as a group to make money... it worked. Yeah... this is a start. I'm leaving out a ton of bands, but I've already wasted enough time on this... I may edit it later... after a nap. Cliff's Notes: 311 Dave Matthews/Dave Matthews Band Clipse N*E*R*D Norah Jones Foo Fighters Nirvana Loretta Lynn The White Stripes Linkin Park Tool Jurrasic 5 Green Day Wilco The Flaming Lips Cake The Beach Boys The Beatles Jamiroquai T.a.T.u.
  20. 580 used prices are on the rise, dump 'em while the dumpin's good. That and the pint (depending on build) should get you at least the tax stamp. Sell the millet, you'll be on your way. Did you see the post where Joe (Hero Gear) is trying to get together a class 3 day at Tullahoma AFB? I'll be there... Maybe you should bring your headphone gear... maybe we can help diversify some of these guys via the wonderful world of barter! **BRENT**
  21. Heh. I've been diversifying myself. I'm now ampless, and I shipped out my Sennheiser HD650's yesterday... I even posted pics of the new hobby in that FS thread. <g> HF-1's may have to go if I need to get into the "oooohhh... I bet a suppressor would be GREAT as a range toy!" game... **BRENT**
  22. VNGun... My first was a High Standard 1911 (ARMSCOR makes 'em both, same pistol, different markings). It was a fine pistol, and quite accurate. I was talking to someone at the range who was a former range instructor (the correct terminology escapes me at the moment) in the marines, and used to compete with his colt mil-spec. I asked him to shoot mine, and he shot a sub two inch group, two handed, at 20 yards. Out of the 5 rounds he shot, the last 3 were grouped within about half an inch. Not bad, not bad at all... Congrats on the gun... but beware of the 1911 itch... early december, I had my first gun, and had never shot a pistol before that HS. Jump forward a few month to 4/20... and I was in a Les Baer... I don't even want to think about what could come next. <g> **BRENT**
  23. hey utarch00... if I'm mistaken... don't I know you from Head-Fi? Welcome aboard (gotta say it, it IS the welcome forum... even though you beat me here by 60 some odd days). <g> **BRENT**
  24. Hey sam... welcome to whatever this place is called. I think I met you when I was up there with the kids a little while back. Maybe we can work something out with you borrowing Xavier (with mohawk, the ladies love the mohawk) for, oh, I don't know... an AR15? yes... yes... goooood... Oh, and Joe... I didn't know Sam could grow facial hair... the marvels of modern science. **BRENT**
  25. I'll be there with Baers on... well... maybe just one... but you know what I mean... <g> **BRENT**
