RM Ammo, CCI Blazer, or Wolf Polyformance?
Jonnin replied to BigK's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Glad to hear its working out for you. You will soon grow past my limited know-how; I reload to be cheap, not to make the best target ammo in the world. Im sure its fine for IDPA and such, since you only have to hit a ginormous target at close range, but only an idiot would shoot the stuff I make out past 30 yards with any hope of hitting say a 3 inch target -- it isnt that well made and is certainly not that consistent. For IDPA, well I dont do that but 3 gun is pretty close, and I just poke a cheap lead slug into a range pickup case with a cheap primer and disk-device's inaccurate powder charge. And, when I miss its stll my fault, not the ammo's. I can hit the pie-plate sized zero points off ring on the cardboard man targets or the knockdown metal thingys every time with this stuff; its a huge target and a short range, and even my poor ammo is more than good enough for that. -
I have had nothing but positive experiences to date. Granted, its only been 3 or 4 speeding tickets or similar minor offenses, but when asked I provide my HCP and so far none have asked to see the gun or bothered me about it. The biggest scene I had was the officer saw my HCP as I flashed my DL, and asked if that was a permit, I showed it, he asked if I was armed (I was not), and he believed me (might as well, why lie when you are legal?) and that was that. What to teach them? I do not know. Mostly, the officers need to understand that a guy with a permit, who admits he is armed, and who is not hostile nor doing anything major (you guys know the difference between speeding and holding up a store I would think) does not need to be told that a gun is dangerous and should be unloaded, nor should the person be disarmed or otherwise aggravated about it. Its ok to keep a wary eye on the citizen, to ask them to keep their hands in sight, and so forth, but anything more should be as a response either to the crime at hand (again, the LEO should know when the crime is important enough to justify additional precautions) or the attitude of the citizen (hostile, odd, threatening behaviors etc.). I think I would feel that the LEO had a poor attitude or was on a power trip if my gun were taken from me, unloaded, etc and I would definately be grouchy if an insulting lecture were added to the mix. I do not like folks to touch my guns without permission. If a LEO crosses these lines over a traffic ticket when I am being friendly and accepting my ticket, the LEO is wrong and you can bet I am going to complain about it later to his superiors. All in all, from my perspective, the LEOs do a pretty good job already. The biggest thing I hear about (and have not experienced) is the disarming/lecture thingy so the only thing that may need work is to explain exactly WHEN and WHY an officer should or should not disarm a citizen (or how to make this call, since its a judgement rather than exact of course). Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Ive never had more than 3-4 get inside in a year, seems like a non-issue. How many are getting inside, and HOW are they getting inside? A well sealed house should not have too many openings wide enough for them to slip in, usually just the babys can get in like under a door or something (put in a new door gasket..?). If the house is full of gaps and holes, yea they are going to get inside, but the best way to get them to knock it off is to just seal up the place IMHO.

I put a 3-7 adjustible power on ours, a leopould (pricy but well made). However, if the bracket is the problem, get a new bracket, cant blame the scope for that! I do not know for sure but ruger *probably* makes rings that will fit other sizes than the one free set that came with the gun (??), if not, there has to be something out there that will work and a new mount is a lot cheaper than a new scope.

From the makers of the Mini-Cannon comes the Mini-Crossbow
Jonnin replied to KahrMan's topic in General Chat
Yea, I would buy this in steel or even a wooden frame, with say 20 of each dart type, if it were not insanely expensive. I wouldnt mind a tranq-dart loading for it -- much more likely to want to KO an annoying dog than set it on fire... could probably give it away the bow and charge a bomb for the darts, easy to lose those.... -
unless you are really, really picky about it you can sort 223 by weight to isolate the military stuff from the 223, mil is much heavier. The brand does not matter too much beyond that unless trying to make something exotic.

How many GRAINS of rice do you think would do the job.... ?

AFTE Headstamp Gallery is handy sometimes.

Depends on what it is. Sometimes the serial does not even give that much, other times they can tell you who made it, when, and more. You have all you need already for the guns you listed, those are modern enough to study on the web via model #, combined with the caliber on the side. It really depends on what you want to know and how old the guns really are as to how much you can find out.

Is it legal to carry military-style pistols?
Jonnin replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
An update I saw on another forum claimed the PLR was in violation because it was a SBR. The picture provided with that did NOT have any mods to make it a SBR, so that was a judgement call by the DA or whoever. I think that point could be defeated if the BAFT guy were to testify. -
aha-- thats why they are always out of mak!

The harsh no is because a LOT of people have shoved the wrong ammo into a gun and blown it up over the years. And the 357 into a 38 is a sure fire way to do that if you can force it to fit. Until you understand firearms, NEVER put ammo into a gun that is not identical to the ammo type listed on the side of the gun. If the gun in question appears to be an "assault rifle" (looks like a military gun) then it may have been bubba'ed and the ammo listed on the gun may not be its actual caliber. Also, very old military bolt action rifles may not take the caliber listed on them either. If you are ever in doubt, get help before you try to fire the wrong ammo in the wrong gun. For revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, what it says on the side of the gun will be correct (apart from extremely rare exceptions). Most model numbers will have a small difference to denote something like a different caliber, or slight change like different metal (stainless or blue) but that may be left off when searching online. For example if you google S&W model 60 or whatever, it may turn out they are all called "model 60" that but some are the 60-a, some are the 60-w, and so forth and you are expected to understand that by context. Its not all that complicated, but its overwhelming at first. So, finally, what does it say on the gun in question? If it says .357 on the barrel or frame, its a 357. If it says 38, its a 38. Thats the best way to figure it out. If it appears to be rather old, and it says 38, be careful its a totally different thing. Post a picture and we can help... there is an obsolete caliber that is 38 and its possible you have one in the mix. It would have a short cylinder, too short for a 38 special, if you did.

Officer, I cannot tell a lie, I found that thing in my back seat....

There is no such thing as +p ammo in 380, by the SAAMI loading standards at least. Unless this changed recently. A few makers mark theirs as +P for marketing or as a warning that its a hot load. The sig can handle buffalo bore in small doses, for whatever that is worth. I can't afford enough of the ammo to wear out my expensive sig to find out just how rough the stuff is on the gun, but it didnt blow up with the 2 mags of it that I tested.
-
As I said above, try JSP hunting ammo maybe. Most ammo stores will have some in 357 -- winchester makes one for sure.

I havent used them but I have to suspect that the crank is as bad as the drill after an hour or 2. For the drill one, you *can* just mount the cutting blades in a vice or something an hold the drill up to the blades rather than hold both items...

Thats going to depend on your home size, type of unit, how cold you want it, etc. A dehumidifier might go a long way to making it feel better inside in the summer. I hate to even give a number for this because of all the variables. A better check is to look at how many kilowatthours you burned in a month & check the rate here...

I am tempted, they are well designed and powerful guns. Some of the ammo is corrosive, esp the better bargains, so learn to clean a gun properly if you plan on going there. Its really quite powerful for its age, and built back when stuff was made to last. Note: the ad you listed is for used guns that were not cleaned up after corrosive ammo, and could be in rather bad shape internally --- so long as YOU are aware of this, proceed.

Heh, pick nearly any gun, somone will have a reservation about its safety features. Pretty much its as safe as any other gun: if you do not release the safety and pull the trigger, it will not fire. I guess, since I carry mine, I am willing to bet my life, or at least my foot, on that. You have a point, though, the grip safety of a 1911 was added for this same reservation about the basic design. My take on it: they have been out for some years now and I am unaware of a growing number of one legged/footed sudden millionaire sig fanboys, so I am going to trust that its fairly safe.

Almost anything I wanted to say here is probably too RACY for the forum, but there is definately a really bad joke in here somewhere due to this f-slip.

How are your allergys? TN has a LOT of plants & trees and general pollen... It does not snow much as other said but we do get a 1/2 inch or so of pollen between rains this time of year. (That was a joke, its not 1/2 inch of course but for real you can scoop up a good sized handful off your car). This year we have had a lot of strong storms, so be ready to drive in severe rain from time to time (maybe once in 2 months but it happens enough to be prepared for it). Mostly the summer is going to be horrid humidity, where it gets 90-100 degrees and you sweat but it will not evaporate. Its rather miserable in the summer. Fall and spring are absolutely amazing. Winter is very, very mild, rarely gets below zero and can still be 50-60 degrees at christmas some years, other times its 20-30, so each year is very different. Maybe you looked at this past year -- we had a LOT of snow -- but most years a real snow is quite rare. I can probably count on my fingers the number of snows that were deep enough to matter in the last 30 years, and 2 of them were last year! Nashville is big enough to have aggravating traffic, but depending on what citys you were in before you might think its small and easy to deal with. The worst thing about our mid sized citys is that if one moron has a bad car accident on a major road, half the city will get backed up -- there just are not enough lanes and alternatives to handle the flow if one of the big routes is shut down. That is in general; its been some years since I was in major nashville traffic but at a guess its about the same. You will want to educate yourself a bit about tornados if you are not up on them. Not super common, but they do touch down from time to time. The only other thing is to forget anything you think you know about the south if the source was the internet, TV, movies, or the like. Just totally clear your mind of all that. Yes, we have poor folks that live in a trailer out in the woods. Somehow the left coast would have you believe that this is worse than having poor folks that live in a dumpster in a big city and makes fun of us for it. I don't understand that part, but anyway, best if you forget all that stuff before you get here =)

I would think jacketed soft points made for handgun hunting would be in order, though lead will behave much the same way unless its very hard indeed.

I tried it on mine and it also drops with the safety on. Half cocked is generous; its more like 1/4 cocked. I doubt it has the force to fire a round, but I didnt try it live. Half cocked is not meant for carry. I am not sure what it IS meant for, I thought it was part of maintence or disassembly but I havent needed to use it for anything. Carry it all the way back & safety on, and it will not fire, and the safety is not easily bumped off by accident -- in a proper holster, its all but impossible, loose in the pocket with other objects while playing backyard football, it becomes a bit of a risk.

does your size die bell the mouth a bit for seating, meaning you need to seat & crimp before trying in the gun?
-
Glad you like it. Even if it were awful I would keep that one for the memories, but its very good. The de is also great, both are accurate & amazing shooters. Neither of them are going anywhere =)
