Palin pardons turkey while others slaughtered From Associated Press November 21, 2008 9:31 AM EST WASILLA, Alaska - Gov. Sarah Palin has granted the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one lucky turkey, but the video that shocked some viewers captured what was happening in the background. As she answered questions Thursday at Triple D Farm & Hatchery outside Wasilla, cameras from the Anchorage Daily News and others showed the bloody work of an employee slaughtering birds behind the former Republican vice presidential candidate. On the video, Palin didn't comment about the slaughter as she answered questions, saying she's thankful that her son Stryker's brigade is relatively safe in Iraq and the rest of her family is healthy and happy. She said she's glad to be back in Alaska. "This was neat," she said of the outing. "I was happy to get to be invited to participate in this. For one, you need a little bit of levity in this job, especially with so much that has gone in the last couple of months that has been so political obviously that it's nice to get out and do something to promote a local business and to just participate in something that isn't so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism. Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too, but at least this was fun."

Barney Frank, ain't he that gay purple dinosaur??? It's way past due for a competency test and a job to qualify for voting privileges. -
If you're alternator dies, you're car will run till the battery dies. You can hook one of these to you're battery and it will keep it running a little bit if you need to get off the road.

Good ideas, the 4 wheeler pack is just an absolute last ditch plan. A few bare necessities in addition to what I normally carry should worse come to worse. I kept it to a gallon sized zip lock so it could stay in the trunk, and use items I could walk through the house and get, that were "multi tasking". I normally carry an extra change of clothes, a GPS and map, couple bottles of PowerAde or water, snack, and "protection". Here's the pack theory. Gallon sized freezer zip lock - pack container in and out of the woods, can use it to carry/store water. I also have a few quart sized freezer bags extra. Contractor bags - They're tough, you can use them to waterproof a debris shelter. Split them in half over some cord for a pup type tent. I can get it one, but I'm a scrawny stickman. Emergency Blankets - They'll go in the pack, and work in a pinch, they're shiny I can stake one out for a signal. I like those Heat Sheets, and bivvys. http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/products.php?catname=SURVIVAL%20TOOLS&cat=10 Fishing line & hooks - if I'm not near a fishing hole I can use the line for traps, snare, or sutures. Very unlikely I'll need it at all, but it takes up no space and it's there. An extra change would also be good in the vehicles or a pair of insulated coveralls. Man, I forgot about Trioxane and I got some lol. I'll put some in the pack. A compass would go in the pack, the GPS eats batteries and electronics can fail, usually when you need them. For a truck/car kit you could pack it in a coffee can. I thought I'd throw this out to collect ideas, different points of view. Just something to keep in your vehicles that's compact, practical, easily & cheap put together and relatively the same in all your vehicles so that's one less thing you have to think about. Chances are I'll never have to use it, like Mark said somebody is bound to come along sooner than later where we ride or if you're along side the road. In either case it's best to stay put and wait.

The "Go Bag" thread reminded me of this, and since it's getting cold, it's time to get the truck ready. This is in addition to the booster cables, tire tools, fire extinguisher, etc. in case you're stranded, possibly over night. I'll put together one like I have in my 4 wheeler. We go 4 wheeling alot in Ky. in the event I get separated from the crew it'll probably be just overnight. This will go in the "trunk" of my 4 wheeler with the tool kit. 4 wheeler kit: In a gallon sized zip lock bag, 2 contractor garbage bags (shelter) Couple space blankets emergency rain ponchos matches magnesium fire starter cotton balls razor knife w/ extra blades fishing line & hooks 550 first aid in addition for the truck hand warmers an M.R.E. Thoughts? Suggestions?

and you have the ability to see this?? Failed economy, because of the President?? How bout irresponsible borrowing, how bout the gov. forcing lending companies into bad loans, how bout corporate America ran by idiots, how bout gov. borrowing, printing, and spending money like it's goin out of style approved and spent by more than the President? Yeah my biggest beef with President Bush is he spends like a democrat and I didn't see much resistance from either side. But i is NOT one mans fault for all this mess. not see'in any hope here either......... Yes we are. Solutions? Who really gives a S**T what the rest of the world thinks? Let's see, we have ascertained that, we are broke, have a failing economy, spending money on two wars. What exactly do you think will happen when you elect a tax & spend democrat President, Congress. Oh you can be assured that it will get worse when they start spreadin the wealth around. I think this election has proven that, and obama has a big blue smile and big floppy ears....... hopefully they'll all go in two & four years.

Obama to use executive orders for immediate impact By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER (Associated Press Writer) From Associated Press November 09, 2008 5:10 PM EST WASHINGTON - President-elect Obama plans to use his executive powers to make an immediate impact when he takes office, perhaps reversing Bush administration policies on stem cell research and domestic drilling for oil and natural gas. John Podesta, Obama's transition chief, said Sunday Obama is reviewing President Bush's executive orders on those issues and others as he works to undo policies enacted during eight years of Republican rule. He said the president can use such orders to move quickly on his own. "There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that," Podesta said. "I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change. We need to get off the course that the Bush administration has set." Podesta also said Obama is working to build a diverse Cabinet. That includes reaching out to Republicans and independents - part of the broad coalition that supported Obama during the race against Republican John McCain. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has been mentioned as a possible holdover. "He's not even a Republican," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said. "Why wouldn't we want to keep him? He's never been a registered Republican." Obama was elected on a promise of change, but the nature of the job makes it difficult for presidents to do much that has an immediate impact on the lives of average people. Congress plans to take up a second economic aid plan before year's end - an effort Obama supports. But it could be months or longer before taxpayers see the effect. Obama could use his executive powers to at least signal that Washington is changing. "Obama's advantage of course is he'll have the House and the Senate working with him, and that makes it easier," said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond. "But even then, having an immediate impact is very difficult to do because the machinery of government doesn't move that quickly." Presidents long have used executive orders to impose policy and set priorities. One of Bush's first acts was to reinstate full abortion restrictions on U.S. overseas aid. The restrictions were first ordered by President Reagan and the first President Bush followed suit. President Clinton lifted them soon after he occupied the Oval Office and it wouldn't be surprising if Obama did the same. Executive orders "have the power of law and they can cover just about anything," Tobias said in a telephone interview. Bush used his executive power to limit federal spending on embryonic stem cell research, a position championed by opponents of abortion rights who argue that destroying embryos is akin to killing a fetus. Obama has supported the research in an effort to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's. Many moderate Republicans also support the research, giving it the stamp of bipartisanship. On drilling, the federal Bureau of Land Management is opening about 360,000 acres of public land in Utah to oil and gas drilling. Bush administration officials argue that the drilling will not harm sensitive areas; environmentalists oppose it. "They want to have oil and gas drilling in some of the most sensitive, fragile lands in Utah," Podesta said. "I think that's a mistake." Two top House Republicans said there is a willingness to try to work with Obama to get things done. But they said to expect Republicans to serve as a check against the power held by Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress. "It's going to be a cheerful opposition," said Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind. "We're going to carry those timeless principles of limited government, a strong defense, traditional values, to the American people." Pence, of Indiana, is expected to take over the No. 3 leadership post among House Republicans. In other transition matters, Obama's new chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, would not say whether Obama would return to the Senate for votes during the postelection session this month. Obama's presence would be extraordinary, given his position as president-elect, especially if Congress takes up a much-anticipated economic stimulus plan. "I think that the basic approach has been he's going to be here in Chicago, setting up his economic, not only his economic team, but the policies he wants to outline for the country as soon as he gets sworn in, so we hit the ground running," Emanuel said. Also, Emanuel would not commit to a Democratic proposal to help the auto industry with some of the $700 billion approved by Congress to for the financial bailout. Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a letter Saturday to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that the administration should consider expanding the bailout to include car companies. Podesta appeared on "Fox News Sunday," as did Pence, and CNN's "Late Edition," where Reid also was interviewed. Emanuel spoke on ABC's "This Week" and CBS' "Face the Nation."
