Chattanooga Police released new information on the police cruiser chase that happened Sunday morning.

Officials responded to the MAPCO Mart off Rossville Blvd. at 10:20 a.m.

When officers arrived, they learned the store clerk was involved in a dispute with a shoplifting suspect, identified as 41-year-old Christopher Parker. Police say Parker threw a drink at the store clerk and then left the store.

CPD found Parker walking along the I-24 Eastbound shoulder and attempted to arrest him.

Police say Parker started to fight the officer, attempting to shove him down the embankment. At some point, Parker knocked the officer to the ground took and control of the officer's patrol vehicle.

Officials say the CPD officer fired his weapon at Parker as he was driving off in the police cruiser.

Georgia State Patrol located the vehicle which led troopers on a pursuit into Catoosa County. GSP was able to arrest Parker in Catoosa County.

A) Not sure why the cop didn't lock his vehicle when exiting it? Was he positive no one else was around to just hop in it & drive off? Seems like a bad decision, IMO.

B) Am I the only one who thinks firing at a departing vehicle on a busy interstate is a bad idea? Is that a deadly force application? The driver wasn't a deadly threat to anyone, was he? Seems like that was just asking for an innocent person to possibly be shot & killed?

Not locked?  Few people are stupid enough to steal a police car. Would you really want a cop fumbling with keys if they had to be somewhere in a hurry?

Not a threat?  More people are killed by cars than guns. He already initiated a wrestling match with a cop.  He's in a police car that probably has a rifle and/or shotgun inside. He could easily impersonate an officer for nefarious purposes if he got away.

Cops lock their car every time they leave it to eat, go in a store or go to the bathroom. Doesn't seem to bother them there does it? What does it take to unlock a car? 2 seconds? 3 seconds? That's nothing.

I don't disagree with the stupid people stealing a police car. But here we have Exhibit A in such a stupid person. Cop was well away from back-up, by himself & had no knowledge of the person on the interstate, i.e. his state of mind and/or physical status. Looks like he found out both, IMO. Had he simply bothered to lock his car, NONE of that would've happened, would it? Nope.

Quite the leap there with the driver becoming a vehicular battering ram. Where did you pull that out from, thin air?

Last I heard, ALL rifles & shotguns were locked up in a rack inside a vehicle for this very reason. Have you heard different? If so, please share it.

You also skipped over the cop shooting at the driver, endangering a lot of innocent people. When did auto theft become a capital crime? Not carjacking, auto theft. Cop should be suspended for a lot of things but certainly for firing his weapon on a crowded interstate. Stupid.
