Sig P-365 vs P-320 Internals

My knowledge of the internals of modern pistols is rudimentary at best.  With all the hoopla about the 320 lately, I’m wondering a bit about my 365 series pistol.  Does it share any of the processes fhat plague the 320?

I haven’t studied the internals of each one to really learn how they work, but the absence of issues with the 365 says a lot.  Sig writes off the 320 troubles as user error, but a smaller gun that is probably more often carried  AIWB or in a pocket than the 320 should be in the news more often if it’s all just negligence.  I wouldn’t touch a 320, but I have a 365 and would buy another one.

The internals of the P365 are very different than the P320. The P365 has a design that is much more akin to the design standards of other striker fired pistols.

  • The 320 uses a different slide lock lever layout and a coil spring held in by a horizontal lateral pin where the 365 uses a wire like spring in the FCU chassis and the takedown lever arm to hold the slide lock lever in place and give it spring tension.
  • The disconnector is in slightly different location on each and a different size and shape; same with the firing pin safety lever that pushes up on the firing pin safety plunger in the slide.
  • The 320 FCU has a separate housing for the sear assembly whereas the 365 sear fits into the FCU chassis directly.
  • The 320 FCU goes into the grip module then the take down lever is pushed through a hole in the grip module and FCU; the 365 has the take down lever in place in the FCU and the whole assembly is placed in the grip module as a complete unit.
  • The P320 FCU is stamped sheet metal and the 365 FCU is a casting which is then finish machined
  • The ejector on the P320 is just a bent over part of the stamped steel, the ejector on the P365 is part of the machined component.

Totally understand your concern.  I have owned two P365s and carried both.  Neither has gone off in my holster.  Have not seen any reports of the P365 doing so.

That being said, am sure that now people will start complaining that the P365 isn't safe either.  Fear and a lack of true knowledge often forms public opinion.

If the name SIG bothers you and keeps you from carrying or P365 then move on.  It is more important that you have something you trust and DO carry.  Personally, I would still put the P365 at the top of my micro 9 list for carry, just not into 9mm anymore.

Might add that back in the 70's and 80's people were afraid to carry a Colt 1911 in a holster cocked and locked.  Many were people who carried double action revolvers for duty.  In time, that fear dissipated with familiarity.

I’m concerned enough to ask questions about it, but not worried about carrying my favorite gun.  I EDC an Sig P-365XL Spectre (orinial Specttre, non comp) that I converted to a Macro.  I fire it very well. Earlier this year I qualified with it at the range for my church security team, and even though I had t shot in ages, still managed a score of 98 out of 100, but I think the instructor counted two holes as one, and my score should have been 99, LOL.  We were shooting the last group at the head of the target, and The one round I dropped, hit the silhouette target dead center of the throat.  Anyway, I still carry it with confidence but just wondered.
