Oainting Polymer Furniture

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about painting a black polymer AK furniture set with desert tan Krylon Fusion paint designed for plastics. Has anyone used this stuff? I understand it resists scratches real well, but I'm not sure how it will do around a hot barrel.

Depending on the color of Krylon you use, the paint will often change color, darkly, to almost a burnt orange color when the barrel gets really hot. Then, as it cools, it will revert back to its original color. Also, when the barrel is hot, the paint can get scratched off with your fingernail.

As far as furniture goes, it stays fairly well in low friction areas, and not so well in others. I'll put up a picture of my gun. Wherever my gloves sit, or where my cheek presses into the stock, there is little paint. I've never really cared much about how these types of guns work, so it isn't a big deal for me. I'd say go for it as long as you don't get too sentimental about longevity. If you do, stick with something like Duracoat or even better, Molyresin. Those finishes ARE heat resistant and don't come off easily at all.
