Breaking in a Galco IWB Summer Comfort

I just got my Galco Summer Comfort holster and am trying to break the leather in. Any suggestions?

The best way I always heard was to wear it... perhaps use some silicone spray on the inside.

I did that to mine, and they turned out great.

This is what I've done with all my leather. I usually start out just wearing the holster without the firearm, just to get it broken up a little. I don't do this for very long though, in fear of loosing some of the form and retention fit to the firearm.

I've never tried the silicone spray. What is that supposed to do?

Just helps it break in faster and provides a smoother draw.

I've got a new OWB holster for my EMP that is waiting to be broke in. Where can you find this silicone spray at, and what type or brand should one look for?

silicone spray comes in a spray can and can be found in wally-worlds auto dept for a few bucks.

I'd just use it. I wouldn't put any kind of spray on the leather out of fear of softening it. A holster is supposed to be stiff.

Some things are suppose to be stiff , but IMHO, a holster is not one of them. A holster should be solid, retentative, but yet comfortable. There's a fine line between soft and to soft. You just have to find it.

You should not delibrately attempt to soften a

leather holster, because you'll ruin its retention

properties. You'll also ruin the boning.

The best way to break in a holster if it is excessively

tight is to place the handgun in a ziplock freezer bag

and place the gun inside the holster and leave it for

about a week. The mil of the plastic will stretch the

inside of the holster slightly and allow an easier

draw.

I would not recommend silicone, it will soften the

leather and eventually ruin the holster.

The "ziplock freezer bag" is my method also.

You can also double bag the firearm and hold it in tight using rubber bands for the week long stretch. I have never had a holster that didn't loosen up using this method.

Why the ziplock bag? Is it to protect the finish of your firearm over that period of time? If so, wouldn't it work just as well to wear the rig periodically over a few days?

I won't debate the point, but I have five holsters I used silicone on and they haven't been ruined after years of faithful service.

I didnt use anything, I just dealt with it, I put my gun on, and went for a looooongg uncofrtable drive, when I got back, it was MUCH better...

The extra thickness of the bag stretches the leather just a tad.

I have tried the, gun in bag in holster, method to stretch a holster, but not to soften it.

I have not tried the Silicone Spray method, but it sounds good. I strongly reccommend that you do not use leather conditioner like used on a ball glove. I ruined a new Don Hume holster that way
