Confused about application for C & R

Recommended Posts

I have read several old threads about applying for mr C & R. I was led to believe you had to order the form from BATF, but on their website is a downloadable form 7cr, collector of curios and relics. When I read this form it seems most of the questions relate to "the business", such as you must comply with all local rule concerning operating a business. I thought a C&R license was strictly for personal use. Is this not the correct form? If not, what do I need to ask for?

This is the correct form:

I see where you're going with the question, but I think that they're just using the word "business" loosely and should probably replace it with the word "activity" or "collecting."

As long as the ATF hasn't changed their minds again, you can print off the online copy and use it. This page: ATF Online - Forms - ATF F 5310.16 Instructions even says "White Paper Disclaimer: Applicants may print completed forms on white paper." So I assume it's still okay to use the printed one.

As I understand it is more of a courtesy to the local Cleo. I just got the address of their web-page and sent it C/O the chief.

Same here. Of course, I printed a shipping label at USPS.com and sent it Priority with Delivery Confirmation so that I'd have proof I sent it if I ever needed it. You can send a flat rate envelope for under $5 with the delivery confirmation. I've never heard of the ATF ever giving anyone a hard time when it comes to proving that they sent the CLEO copy, but better safe than sorry in my book.

Thanks for the info. the form seems very confusing but then it is the government.

Is there some specific notation you have to use when you send it to the sheriff, or just put it in a envelope and mail to the sheriff?

Glenn, make sure you address it to Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones at the appropriate address. That's what I did since that's what he goes by. :D

I filled mine out and then took it personally to the CLEO (my local chief of police) and watched him fill it out. I then sent it priority mail so I could track it if need be.

I just got mine in the mail today:)

Now what am I gonna buy 1st:)

Fill what out?

There are places that are too be signed by the CLEO. Some here have mailed it to there CLEO; some have done what I did; some have left it blank and let the Feds mails them a copy. I filled out everything I could, took it to him and he signed where he was supposed too, mailed it off. It seems confusing...welcome to the Feds world:)

I saw a place for the signature of the CLEO. I took it there and he signed it. He signed in two places...I guess he signed both copies. Whether I did it right or not, I have no idea. C&R did come today, so they must not have cared how I did it. I just did what I thought the directions stated....oh well....call me an over-achiever:)
