It has been in use for a long time. I know when I was in Bosnia in 1995-1996 they were testing a system that did the same thing. It could give you a distance and direction from one of the three or more sensors.

It is pretty amazing stuff but in reality it rarely catches people commiting a crime. I seem to recall a study that it only caught a few criminals a year at the cost of the multi million dollar system itself as well as a hefty cost of running it. How often is a criminal going to shoot a gun then wait around? What woudl likely have to happen is a series of cameras to monitor but that will be met with strong opposition.

With a cost of 60,000 per square mile (if the article is accurate), its definately cool tech and variants of it have been put for a while now but wow 60,000 a square mile. For that kind of money how many more peace officers could you put on the street and what would the impct of that be on gun crimes.

Assumming that is the yearly cost maybe 1.5 - 2 1st year officers.

Since I am initially skeptical of many things like this I'm gonna go ahead and say this type of Big Brother, high-end military technology does not belong in the hands of locals.

lets just say one officer for every 3 square miles to be on the safe side. Cost of equipping and shifts and all that. I think id rather have an additional officer in the area than a microphone picking up gunshots. That officer isnt limited to just recording one very specific type of crime. Im sure its a great tool but its throwing a lot of money to solve one specific issue when you can spend the same a amount to have significantly reduced response times and incresed community presence.
