MOA or MIL Scope?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a little deeper into the long range precision world and I was wanting some input on what type of scope is preferred and why. I will also eventually want a spotting scope with the corresponding reticle. thx in advance

I would say MIL because the calculations are easy to do in your head.

A Mil-dot reticle is the ultimate low-tech, battery-free, EMP-proof rangefinder. Unless you're always only shooting at known distances, and if there's any chance you could ever have to SWAG a range to target or lead hold-off on moving target, Mil-dot is your huckleberry.

Any suggestions on brands/models? Looking for something between $1500 and $2500

Nightforce. US Optics. Premier Reticle. Pick one that suites your needs.

US Optics makes the scope to your specs.

Leupold is nice but they are not the best value out there.

BTW, what caliber is this going on and what ranges are you expected to shoot at?

One more thing, do not be fooled into getting a BDC type reticle. They never match the intended caliber(s). A standard mildot is a better option and if you want to use it for a quick holdover make a cheat sheet. I have one in the objective cover and when I pop it open there is my "quick" data.

And one thing I would recoomend is getting a first focal plane scope. That way the calculations are the same with all magnifications. Otherwise your reticle willl only be accurate at one magnification. And as someoen already mentioned, get a scope with the same adjustments on the turrets as on the reticle. This makes on the fly corrections so much easier.

Vortex HD- if you want Mils or MOA the reticle and the adjustments will match. there C.S. is great! i bought a vortex from optics planet and when i got it i decided i just prefered a duplex and did not need the extra stuff. well optics planet has 100% money back garuantee, anyway they refused to refund my money because they said "it looked like it may have been used" contacted Vortex, they sent me a return label then refunded the money to optics planet so optics planet would refund me my money!

It's going on a .308 bolt gun. I have a Leupold Mk 4 in MOA and I'm going to the range this evening so I'll hopefully know whether or not I want to keep it.
