i really dont have a reason for it either, lol. im probably going to try to get into deer hunting this upcoming season and use it for that, i just like a leveraction rifle and i shot my brothers NEF handi-rifle in .45/70 and knew i had to have one. I also like it because .45/70 was the first self-contained cartridge commercially available

couple questions KahrMan,

how did shortening the barrel affect the way it shoots? did it shorten the effective range? increase muzzle blast, or recoil?

does the front sight obstruct the view through the scope?

Very nice rifle you have.

First three questions...not sure. i bought it this way so no frame of reference for comparison. I can tell you this, it is exceptionally well balanced. I was shooting it yesterday and would put the recoil on par with a bolt action 30-06.

The front sight does not obstruct the view through the scope although you can see it. The scope has a standard duplex reticle and the front sight comes up about half way between the bottom of the scope and the horizontal crosshair. After a couple of shots you get used to it and hardly notice it is there. The scope has quick detach rings so I dont want to mess with the front sight.

even though i LOVE the feel of it, its just waaaayyy to expensive to shoot recreationally. at 26.50 for 20 rounds for the cheap stuff, i wont be going to the range and going through 1-200 rounds at a sitting.

there is a place nearby where i think it is a professional reloading shop where you go to them tell them what you want and they load it for you, never been but will check into it.

i dont have the place or proper instruction to get started in reloading/handloading. besides i dont shoot THAT often but would probably shoot more if i had the ammo to shoot....

Shortening the barrel should result in a better crown & a stiffer barrel, so, it should shoot better. The reasonable effective range isn't changed. The muzzle blast goes up.

To me, the 1895 45/70 feels like a 12ga.

not even close to me IMO. 12ga. is much more in my perception. my 20 ga. kicks more than it does with birdshot. those are just bone stock hunting guns though, no recoil reduction

I have the Guide Gun with a straight stock. I'm guessing at least a half pound difference in weight. That said, I really can't tell much difference in my 20ga and 12ga; probably because my 20ga is lighter than my 12ga.

I loves my GG. Had it out 2 Saturdays ago shooting it 1 handed (from the shoulder) 'cause I'm only 6wks out of shoulder surgery. It didn't kick any different than my 12ga (Browning A-5 with 22" barrel).

I have a load that, at 1850fps with a 405 grain bullet, has over 40 ft/lb of free recoil energy coming from a 7 lb rifle...An evil, evil load.

Factory loaded 45/70 rounds are not even close to what a guide gun is capable of.

Pie, can you calculate recoil energy or does it have to be measured? id like to know the difference in a couple of factory loads

The powder charge space is not as critical as bullet and velocity. Go to any of the reloading sights and they will tell you a "factory duplication" load that can be entered for powder weight if you really want to get close.
