SKS magazines

Recommended Posts

I have an SKS made by Norinco.  My problem is the magazines either jam or they don't stay in the gun after each shot.  These are aftermarket magazines, so I know the quality may not be as good as a factory item.  Where can I get 30 round magazines that are decent?

Tapco does not make 30 round magazines for sks. If you want 30 round magazines and want polymer I've actually heard several good reports about the newly redesigned pro mag 30 round polymer mags. The only mags Tapco makes for the regular sks are 20 round duck bill. Every one that I have ever talked to has had excellent reliability and functionality with their tapco mags.

If you want steel mags you can get on gun broker and see if you can find some USA brand mags. They are the only steel 30 round mags that actually work. The only draw back is they are not made anymore and are rare. Although I managed to find 6 back when I had a regular sks. Be prepared to pay upwards of 50.00 a piece for them if you find them as they are that rare. On a side note I was actually able to load 37 rounds in each of the 30 round USA mags.

If you want to go duck bill less there is the Marcus sks magazine adapter that will allow for the tapco duck bills to be cut off and work like an ak mag then. You can buy the adapter and modified magazines here. http://www.thesksmagadapter.com/

On a side note mr Taliaferro (Marcus) has also modified the newly redesigned pro mag 30 round polymers to work with the adapter. His functionality tests were positive.

If I ever get another regular sks I'll be going duckbill less.

I hope this post was informative and helpful.

You're best bet would be to find a Chinese made 20 round fixed mag. They either have a star on the side, or a "slabside" smooth pattern. That would probably be the best in terms of reliability.

I've heard from numerous people those 20 round star magazines are not very reliable either.

Has been in mine. I would take them over any new production craptastic tapco mag. That's just my opinion though. I like my SKS rifles with the 10 round mag from the factory. That's what they were designed to run. Once again, just my .02.

Why not just get an AK if you want to have high cap mags in it?

Because an sks is more accurate and cheaper.
